This '93 Montero is a weird Gen 1-2 combo..
I rebuilt the engine in this 1993 Gen 2 and wanted to shoot a video on it since it's a half Gen between the 1 and 2 models.

    Nice! I run a very similar rig in Western Australia, its a 1993 NH with the 3.0 litre. It's definitely a bit slow, and loves to be revved (as you mentioned), but its never let me down and has taken me around the state on multiple trips without complaining

    Lots of misinfo in the comments already. The coil spring rear was v6 only for gen1 and 2 and the axle swaps directly between the two. For a leaf sprung gen1 get a montero sport axle and springs as they share rear suspension. I once found an early gen2 SR in a yard; suspension seats, rear LSD, 4.88 gears on the smaller axles probably because it had the 3.0 engine. I pulled the axles and rear coils but should have got the torsion bars as early gen2 fit (and lift) gen1. Somewhere I was told that the length of the bars changed at some point.

    This is actually a standard Gen 2 and its not a hybrid between 1 and 2 as he says, ABS was sold as extra oprion and airbags were not standard by law in America then. Also this exact model was made until 1995/96 because I have the same model and its a 1996 but a 4m40 turbo intercooler, same colour as this as wasabi green with same steering. The owner of this must have removed the rear 2 rear bench seats which made this car a 9 seater. But maybe this was bought as a 5 seater because the pajero was sold in several options. Also they later added the plastic skirts and aides as a facelift model and also with the vent on the hood but most of them also were just as this without the vent. The v6 ones came in petrol only. This manual spec was either an import from South America or Europe because some were built or assembled in Columbia so this actual spec is rare, not because its a 93 gen 2, Gen 1 was produced until 1991, and Gen 2 was started from 1990 and seats are different from gen1. The 9 seater model is the one I have and the top rear has a slight lift for headroom just like the land rover discovery. Remember in north and South America its called a Montero in UK and some European countries its called Shogun, rest of Europe, Africa and Asia its called Pajero, Korea also bought the license from Japan and produced the Gen 1 as the Hyundai Galloper with the 4m40 engines. This also was used in lots of Hyundai Vans. This Gen 2 was also produced in China under licence from Mitsubishi the Changfeng company and they call it the Changfeng Liebao Q6 or the "Leopaard Q6" and it was produced as Gen 2 from 2000s till 2017and the later models were just as the later pajero models with very slight difference on interior and lights on the later models but kept the bodystyle and everything still same for the chinese market but i don't know it this is now available for international sales because they are still available in China for sale. They even produce the Gen 4 also. Check changfeng Liebao Leopaard Q6 to see this. The chinese army was using this pajero models. The Leopaard is spelt with 2 a's so its not a mistake just to keep a unique name in English. This actual model with the 9 seater was used by UN troops also in the Bosnia war peace keeping in the 90s and some other countries. The name brand name Pajero isn't used in Spain and north and South America because its translate to a bad word so they gave it Montero instead. Also the leather seat was an option and some countries were supplied with both cloth or leather seats, they did not all come in leather. Mine is the exact vehicle but a diesel 4M40 engine with same package and front bullbar/matal bars/guards. They had the black package or chrome package and mine was chrome.

    My one-owner 93 RS has ABS system on top of the standard RS features. Built in May/Jun 93 and bought new from the dealer in Nov or Dec 93 as a leftover, at a good discount with a '78 Raider trade-in. 179K, cruises at 70 mph, and gets pretty winded above 7500' elevation. Many thousands of miles on unimproved roads in WA, ID, MT, UT, NV, CA and OR.

    Gen 1 also have coils rear suspensión models after 1988. Gen 1 have 4H, the diference is that gen 2 have it with and without central dif lock to use it on or off road. Gen 1 have a PTO winch option, Gen2 have a variable (soft, médium, hard) suspensión, etc, etc. Gen 1… less electronics… that’s realy good for sand and mud driving. You must know the mitsibishi Type 72. You are going to understand why are they all that tought 😜🦾🚜💨💨💨

    I find the tachometers on Gen 2 Monteros read about 15% higher than the actual RPM as read by the crank sensor that the ECU sees. I've noticed this across multiple examples.

  • @ElijahDecker
    @ElijahDecker 4 дні тому

    92 and 93 Monteros had four trim packages. Base, RS, LS, and SR. The base models didn't have the plastic lower cladding and crank windows and they all had a manual transmission. Also, the base models just said Montero on the fenders. The base and RS trims didn't have the third row seats or the sliding rear windows for the third row passengers. The RS and LS could be spec'd with either a manual or automatic trans. In 94, they homologized the LS and SR feature sets and discontinued the base and RS trims. The manual transmission was available until 95 on all trims, except the SR. All SRs are automatic from the factory.

    Kinda like the 1991-1992 FJ80 Land Cruiser; the engine and transmission were carried over from the 1988-1990 FJ62. 1993+ 80 series Land Cruisers got the new engine and updated transmissions.

  • @Harry_Gersack

    The "LSD" you're talking about is a viscous coupling unit and the 4WD system that uses it is the "Super Select". It allows you to drive on tarmac with awd and you can switch between 2H and 4H while driving up to 100km/h (you have to be coasting in a straight line to switch) The other system, where you can't drive on tarmac with 4wd is called the "Easy Select". It doesn't have a viscous coupling, so front and rear are mechanically locked together as soon as you put it into 4wd. I'm surprised you didn't know the Super Select 4wd system, here in europe it is more popular than the Easy Select system..

    • @Harry_Gersack
      @Harry_Gersack 4 дні тому

      Edit: CAUTION before you slam that thing into 4wd while you're going down the road at 60mph: First thing is: I just looked on the sticker and it say 80km/h and not 100km/h. Second: Make sure the front diff is still stock. In the super select system the front wheels are not engaging via the hubs, there is an actuator on the front diff and the hubs are actually always connected to the front axles. If this car doesn't have these parts anymore you will break something. Another thing I wanted to say is: I think you're assuming this is a "gen 1.5" is because you guys didn't get all the different versions of the Pajero in the states. They made different trim levels for each market. Many things that you call rare are pretty standard in other markets. The 6G72 is a pretty standard feature, as much as the 4D56, as they were introduced towards the end of the production of the first gen. They both were used for a long time in the second gen. The SOHC 12V 6G72 was used from '90 to '96, so actually longer than they used it in the first gen. Also when it became a 24Valve in '96 it was still a 6G72. btw it also came as 24V DOHC in other models though, not the Pajero. The 4D56 was used even longer, I think 2008 was when they stopped producing the second gen "Classic". Also the ashtray and center console for example are the same on both of my Gen 2's. One is a '95 6G74 with super select and the other one is a 2004 4D56 with Easy Select. They both have cloth seats, the 2004 has the same bench in the rear and also has the optional two seats in the 3rd row. The combinations they sold were bizarre sometimes, my '95 for example has no Passenger Airbag, but it has Super Select, electronically adjustable shock absorbers and a full on heating system with a second heater core under the rear seat. Btw I think if you look under the plastic that covers the fenders, you'll probably find the holes to attach the third row seats. Now I'm really curious to what you consider a "Gen 2.5" and how it links up the second and third generation. Because the latest built second gens were the "Classic" trim, they also had the boxy fenders people think about when they hear "gen 2.5" but they were pretty minimalistic compared to other second gens..

    • @Harry_Gersack
      @Harry_Gersack 3 дні тому

      @akoshorvath-risko5838 I'm not familiar with the Pajero Sport but it should be fairly easy by the positions of the transfer case lever. If it has 2H, 4H, 4HLc, and 4 LLc then it should be Super Select. If it only has 2H, 4H and 4L then it should be Easy Select. Normally there should also be a sticker on the driver door, right above the window controls, that explains rhe different modes.

    What are your thoughts on the LSD vs. factory diff lock?

    • @Harry_Gersack
      @Harry_Gersack 4 дні тому

      I don't know what you exactly mean with your question, but the Super Select System has both of them. It makes no sense comparing the modes 4H and 4HLc, because they're for different scenarios. 4H is for tarmac, firm gravel, etc and 4HLc is just like 4H on the Easy Select models that don't have a center differential. The "LSD" is actually a viscous coupling unit and allows the front and rear prop shafts to spin at different speeds, so you can drive on tarmac with 4wd engaged. In stock form (with no manual or automatic hubs) you can switch between 2H and 4H while driving up to 100km/h. (gotta be driving in a straight line and more or less coasting)

    • @BrokeWrench
      @BrokeWrench 3 дні тому

      The LSD is always active even in 2wd so its better than the diff lock in most situations. For ultimate traction when your offroad the lock will offer that last bit of traction the LSD wont give initially until there is some wheelspin to activate it

    • @BrokeWrench
      @BrokeWrench 3 дні тому

      @@Harry_Gersackthis truck has a limited slip rear axle that isnt very common in addition the the LSD in the transfer case

    • @Harry_Gersack
      @Harry_Gersack 3 дні тому

      @ how would you know? He never lost a word about it and the rear axle is just a standard gen 2 axle. I mean I agree that the LSD rear diffs were rare on pajeros, compared to the factory diff lock option. But nobody was talking about that, neither the guy in the video, nor was this guy here referring to it in his question

      @@Harry_Gersack actually, he does state that this rig does have the LSD rear axle. My question was/is regarding the LSD vs. DIFF lock so, yes, I was referencing the rear axle, not the transfer case. @BrokeWrench gave me most of the answer I was looking for but, am really looking for comparison feedback from off-road experience with both. I have a 99 gen 2.5 with the 4.27 geared diff lock rear but, it's sluggish running 33's. I was going to change to 4.63 with the 3rd member from an SR but, am now considering 4.9 from a Sport to possibly accommodate 35's. Sports with the LSD aren't too hard to find and the 3rd member would be a fairly straightforward swap or, take the gears and rebuild the factory locker. I'm leaning towards the LSD due to budget and time constraints but, everyone seems to gush over having a locker so, looking for some real world off-road feedback between the two.

    Also the back seat is different from a Gen 1. Gen 1s don’t have the arm rests at all, just a straight up bench seat

      Not more than for a regular gen 1 or a gen 2. I'm from Europe, so to me this isn't a "gen 1.5" it's a normal second gen Pajero. Except for the wiper and indicator/light controls, there are no rare parts on this. Even the inclinometer was still used in the Hyundai Galopper in the early 2000's. What makes this car rare is just the combination of options. E.g. the Super Select 4wd system normally only came on the 6G74 and with a multi channel ABS, this one combines it with a 6G72 and doesn't have abs at all.

      Nah, most will only need to be sourced from the older models for drivetrain amd newer models for body and accessories

      @Harry_Gersack 3 дні тому

      @@BrokeWrench No ?😂 It's a gen two engine, transmission and rear axle. The Super Select was only introduced to the second gen so chances you're going to find any parts for that on a gen 1 are virtually zero

    Amazing video. I'm going to be changing the plugs out on my 99. My truck threw the p0300 code . after I put some gas in it , it started but then quickly stalled. I changed the fuel filter, pump and now I'm charging the ignition coils along with spark plugs hoping this fixes the problem. Any suggestions?

    Great video. I really like your breakdown & comparison explanation of the different year models at the end. This was very useful for me. I’m late to seeing this video (it’s been out for a year or more at time of my watching) but the info is great food for thought. The Montero that you had at the time of making, looks great and is something similar to the setup I’m looking for. So thanks again champ. 👍 (I’m an Aussie, so we call them Pajero over here but they’re the same vehicle) cheers mate.

    Just found your videos. I’m currently looking at purchasing a Pajero, something in the era between 2002 - 2011, so your videos are a great reference point. Thanks for making them, I’m now subscribed to your channel and will watch with interest. 👍

    Thank you very much. I have 4th gen and I’ve searched alot on the reason for the sound about 2100 rpm. I’ve replaced the pushing and the annoying sound gone. Really thanks.

    I've got a 99 with winter package. I'd like to go to 4.9's but keep the select front axle with an Aussie auto locker. Do you know which Montero sport has the 4.9 select front?
