Can you just recoat the clearcoat on a paintjob. Do you have to remove the old clear coat somehow or just sand it .
How many CFM is your shop air?
I have a big devair compressor, 24 cfm if I remember right
How much is cost
These are about 2000 in my shop
Love it !! Exactly what I needed !
How do you replace rear 1/4 panels on front fenders of 95 Z71 chev. Do you have to remove fenders. If so how do you get the piece straight. Thanks.
You mean just the lower rust repair patches? Yes, fenders will have to come off, but will need to be back on to align and tack in place, then off to finish weld and inner paint. These fenders are usually pretty inexpensive and less work to just replace
@@Johnnymidnight That whole lower foot was just full of sand , and looks like maybe damage in behind the fender also. I was just thinking the less I have to paint the better.
Amazing work! The fact that you went above and beyond and even put por15 I wish we had more people like you! I know 90% of people doing this wouldn’t even come close to your work! Wish I was closer!
Thank you 👊🏼
Thanks for walking me through my 2004 3rd gen rocker panels. I live in Nl where corrosion is king Lol. I am going to take your advice and go with full OEM outer panels. I have to replace the inner/centre also, but my problem is that the inside floor is lip is also corroded and has to be replaced. I do not see them anywhere on line. Do you make your own, and if so can you post the template, W/ dimensions for your viewers. Also what after market replacement panels do you find best? I have seen some very thin off shore junk out there. There use to be a company in Ont that made good ones, but their name eludes me now, or if they are still in business? I am putting all this together now for next spring. I just had a hip replaced, I am not a lazy arise, its just that it will be that long before I can get onto a concrete floor again to take the inside floor measurements. So if you have a template made up to share, it would be greatly appreciated as it has a lazy curve to it . Thank's for sharing your knowledge, Cheer's H
I typically just make pieces as needed, rebuilding that flange should be fairly straightforward. I get everything through LKQ, they don’t sell to the public, but most auto parts stores will deal with them. It seems no matter who supplies the parts, they all come from the same factory, just stay clear of the really cheap parts.
You’re very good thanks for the videos gonna tackle mine This winter! ❄️
Is this better/more durable than wrapping in film? Im looking to dechrome, including the front grill and wondered which was the better option.
This has held up exceptionally well, but I would think vinyl would be more durable, I personally have no experience with it though
I have since found out about Plastidip which could be just what I am after. Semi durable, non permanent.....and cheap!!! My window trim and grill wrap quote was £300. All I need for Plastidip is a couple of cans (around £36), some masking tape and patience!
How much would this cost ?
These are typically 5-5500 range
Sick asf
There are numerous holes in the rocker panels. Are there plugs for them to keep salt, dirt and water out? Also on my 2011 Sierra 1500 SLE extra cab there are numerous holes of various sizes all through the frame. Should they be plugged and what size plugs do they take and where to get them. It looks like GM and Chevrolet have set us all up to fail on these 30 thousand and up trucks. My frame now has welded plates on both sides because of rust.
Yes, there should be plugs in the holes in the rockers, auto parts store should have a catalog from a company like Wurth that will be able to match them up. The best thing for the frame is to pressure wash inside all the openings, and when dry spray it inside with something like fluid film
I also looked for weld through primer at princess auto and Canadian tire, they didn't have any. I looked on line today and it looks like their are a lot of different kinds, what type do you use. Their is a postal strike so amazon doesn't look good.
I use Dominion Sure Seal copper, Lordco always stocks it, if you have them where you are
You don’t have to prep the stainless or chrome for adhesion? Can I use the SEM product on chrome?
You definitely have to prep it, it’s a direct to metal product, so it has to be sanded for mechanical adhesion
I went to princess auto yesterday and they don't sell paint or epoxy primer that isn't in a spray can. I picked up a small paint gun that I thought might be good for this job. Rocker panels cab corners and 1/4 panels. It is called a Vapor LVLP gravity feed touch up spray gun.It has a 0.8 nozzle. Do you think it will be good enough for all materials ,epoxy primer, high build primer, paint ,and clear coat.
The gun should work, will probably have to dial the fluid back for the base. You will need to get the primers from somewhere that sells auto body supplies, like Lordco, sometimes Napa, possibly KMS
I’d like to see how to do tail light mounting panels , great videos by the way .
where do you buy the box sides? All I can find is part panels.
I get everything through LKQ Canada, they don’t sell to the public but they should be available through any auto parts store , 6’ left side is CH1766110C, and right side is CH1157110, both show in stock with my supplier.
Great, Thanks for the information.
hey man do you happen to know if the steps would be the same on a 2013 sierra single cab work truck?
Yes, I believe they’re identical 👍🏼👍🏼
@@Johnnymidnight Thank you for the quick response!
Heck,I have painted bumper covers and fenders with the same paint and had the match off a bit! Plastic parts are just tough! Look at most newer Chevy Camaros. The rear quarters dont match from the factory!
Absolutely, any time a part is painted separately, the pearl can lay different, coverage might be a hair different, so many variables!!
It seems like the last few jobs I have done are all tri-coats,2 of them were Hondas! They were fun to match, ugghh. Thx for the video
Wondering why you didn’t use Bull Dog Adhesion promoter On the bumper 1st. Or is there a need to ?
Never heard of that brand, but you only need adhesion promoter when coating raw plastic. This bumper cover was primed, so just requires sealer before paint
Seems most plastic bumpers come primed nowadays.I remember the days of scrubbing them down with AJAX cleanser, then wiping with a polycracker sponge. It worked great, but alot of labor added to beat out the fisheyes!
Another nice job looking good
Hello, Do you know if I would be able to put a clear coat (2k clear coat) on top of the SEM paint?
I’m sure you could, but you could also just use a gloss paint to save that step
What about the primer color. What is best gray, black ,red. And what about the different temp of the primer reducer mix, how do I know what to use their.
Color doesn’t matter much, most epoxies are green or grey, most urethane is grey. Reducer speed just depends on the temperature you’re spraying in, if it’s hot out, use slow, if spraying in a cooler environment, use fast 👍🏼
This gives me hope to fix my daddy car. Locating someone i trust is the hardest.
Definitely have to be careful, there are lots of guys that say they can do it, but……. And then there’s the guys who want to charge like they’re Chip Foose…..
@@Johnnymidnight exactly and i dont have j leno money lol
Nice work
Can you tell us the air pressure you are spraying at for the sealer, paint and clear? Thanks Jon
I get asked this a lot, but honestly for me it’s always just what feels right, I never actually look at the gauge.
Never set for what the gun recommends! I think they are in some kind laboratory environment when they stamp those settings, with a specific product at a specific temp!
@@petersmart1999 Just sounded like it was up high, maybe thats my problem.
This is amazing
Thanks for trying the paint gun .I don't paint that often. So often I like to know how it works. Cause I'm cheap .
It’s definitely good for the cost, and I’m the same, not cheap, but “reasonable “, or also known as most often broke 😂
The plastic that you use for taping and painting, how do you buy that stuff ,does it come in big rolls .
Yes, it’s a 3M product, specifically for automotive.coated on one side, which is extremely important for painting, as your paint doesn’t flake off of the plastic. Buy the 16” wide rolls because I work on a lot of trucks.
@@Johnnymidnight So one side lets the paint stick to it better than the other, I am thinking so it doesn't get into your work.
@@jeffglasman19yes, exactly, if you don’t use treated plastic the air pressure will blow the paint off of the plastic
Do you put the two coats of epoxy primer ,and the two coats of high build on at the same time or do you have wait overnight between the two types. And can you spray the primers on right out of the can ,or do they have to be thinned , and what type of thinner ,what is it called. Thanks. I really like your work. I hope I can get the same results.
I typically do 2 coats of epoxy, 10-15 minutes between coats, and same time before coating with high build. Each primer will have its specific hardener, and usually will require a set amount of reducer as well. Every product is different, so always best to request the technical data sheet from the supplier when you buy it if unsure
When I buy the primer's , will the napa store have the mixing instructions . I didn't realize that you had to mix in a hardener with primers.
@@jeffglasman19yes, it will be on the can, but you can also request the TDS (technical data sheet)
Turned out amazing!
Thanks!
Did you take the gun apart and do a complete inspection and cleaning before using
Nope, added paint and went for it 😁
Thanks for showing plastic repair, learn something new every day. Really appreciate your videos. I used to paint cars on the side at local tech college. That was 25 years ago. Now I want to do repairs on my own cars. Thanks again.
Great video. Thanks. Thank you for your honest opinion of Temu. I have a few of their guns but have yet to use them. Thanks for your opinion of the paint gun cups.
Thank you, always glad to hear when a video is helpful 👊🏼
How much lol and where do I drop it off
Just drop off here in BC with a blank cheque 😁😁
where did you buy your arch panels ?
All of my panels come from LKQ
Beautiful
Thank you
Where the cab corner overlaps the rocker just below the door jam, (small indentation) is there anything you put in there or is it just tight as you can get it and left alone and just finished paint work? Currently working on one now and realized it.
Yep, after it’s all primed and prepped, lay a bead of flexible seam sealer in there 👍🏼
@ thank you very much, Also, thanks for responding so quickly, much appreciated. Very helpful and informative. Thanks again
Do you have a video on 95 chevy Z71 4x4 two door extra cab , with back seat ,rocker panel replacement.
I don’t, haven’t done one of those trucks in a long time, actually had one booked in for January, but he recently canceled
@@Johnnymidnight I guess it should be straight forward once I have the new panel in front of me. It just looks different wear the rocker ,meets the rear cab corner panel. I thought it would be nice to watch one being done first. Thanks.
Thank you for info
how long do you let the primer dry before paint, and then how long do you let the paint dry before the clear coats.
Primer is typically overnight before it can be sanded, the basecoat usually flashes in 15-20 minutes before clear, but there are lots of variables, temperature, air flow, reducer speed, etc. I use solvent basecoat, but waterborne products have a much longer flash time
Looking good.
Get a dog. It seems to help all the other UA-camrs 😂
😂😂
Which exact line of ppg epoxy do you use? Thanks
I use PPG Shopline, although for epoxy I use the better PPG DP50
Love that old truck.....my very first vehicle was a 79 f150 was originally same color however it had seen a few color changes over the years lol always thought about taking back to original but never did
Thanks for the content.
Thank you for the video... very helpful sir..👌🏻
How do you tell when you have block sanded enough, or taken enough off. Or taken too much off.
It’s all about feel, if blocking a panel straight, or just taking out a low area, if you can feel it, you will see it. Often re priming and blocking again is necessary
