Winchester Cathedral | Exploring The Longest Medieval Cathedral In The World!
Welcome to Walking The Wyrd!
In this walk, I take a look at the stunning Winchester Cathedral in Hampshire in the UK.
The current cathedral was commissioned by William The Conqueror in 1079 but there has been a Christian Minster on the same site since the 7th century.
The cathedral has been dubbed the longest medieval cathedral in the world at a whopping 170 metres (about 558 feet) long.
The cathedral holds a wealth of fascinating artefacts and is the burial place of some notable people including British author, Jane Austen.
I hope you enjoy the tour!

Exploring The Magical Holloways of West Dorset | Shute's Lane, Hell Lane and Colmer's Hill
Переглядів 4,8 тис.28 днів тому
Welcome to Walking The Wyrd! In this video, I take an enchanting walk through some of the magical holloways of West Dorset. These holloways are believed to be around 300 years old. The soft sandstone, which is prominent in some parts of southern England, is easily eroded over time by the movement of people, cattle, drovers, pilgrims, and even smugglers. This erosion has created these beautiful ...

Welcome to Walking The Wyrd! In this video, I take a walk through the history of Maumbury Rings in Dorchester, Dorset. This site was originally a neolithic henge - believed by historians to have been used for ceremonial use. When the Roman's discovered the site, they transformed it into a Roman Amphitheatre which played host to Gladiatorial battles! During the civil war, the site was repurposed...

Hello and welcome to Walking The Wyrd! Lovey Warne was a prominent figure of smuggling lore in the New Forest in the South of England during the 18th and early 19th centuries. Lovey actively helped with the smuggling of contraband from the coast, inland to her home in Burley. Lovey also acted as a human beacon to warn others when the Revenue Men were in the area, by walking across a hill displa...
Knowlton Church & Earthworks | Where Christianity & Paganism Meet

Welcome to Walking The Wyrd! In 12th Century Dorset, the Norman's decided to build a christian church in the middle of a neolithic ceremonial earthwork. Historians believe this may have been to assert the dominance of the new religion over the old. The church served the nearby village, which sat on the banks of the River Allen, just 500 metres north-west of the church and earthworks. However, i...

Welcome to Walking The Wyrd! The Isle of Portland in Dorset, has a rich maritime history and with that, many interesting local legends. From mermaids, to a pirate's graveyard, to Viking raids, Portland's folklore has been shaped by its history as an important place for smuggling and sea faring! I began my walk at the north of the island near Tout Quarry, and headed south-east to the fascinating...
A Walk Through The Ages | Discovering Dorset's Iron Age Hillforts
Переглядів 13 тис.3 місяці тому
A warm welcome to Walking The Wyrd! You would be forgiven for passing a hillfort without giving it much thought. To most of us today, they are a pretty place to walk with spectacular views. However, to our ancestors, they were so much more. In this walk, I explore the Neolithic, Iron Age and even modern 17th century history of the incredible Hambledon Hill in Dorset before then exploring it's n...
The Abandoned Chapel In The Woods | St Luke's Chapel

Welcome to Walking The Wyrd! This week, I take a summer stroll through the beautiful Dorset landscape in search of an abandoned chapel in the woods. The chapel of St Luke, just north of Abbotsbury, was built in 1246 by Cistercian monks. They lived and farmed the surrounding lands for 300 years until the dissolution of the monasteries saw the chapel reduced to rubble. The chapel then fell under ...

Welcome to Walking The Wyrd! In this video, I explore the incredible grounds of Portchester Castle which started life as a Roman Fort to defend from the invasion of Saxon barbarian pirates! The fort was well used by the Saxons after Roman rule as a fortified settlement. Later, the Normans took ownership and added the great square keep which is one of the largest and oldest keeps in England. The...

Welcome to Walking The Wyrd! The West Wycombe Caves were excavated with good intentions by Sir Francis Dashwood, 2nd Baronet, to relieve local unemployment which had been caused by three consecutive failed harvests in the mid 18th century. The local men were able to find work quarrying the chalk in the caves which was then used as a building material in the local area. But, it was the hedonisti...

Welcome to Walking The Wyrd! Join me for a summer walk at beautiful Highcliffe in Dorset! This peaceful town is home to one of the most architecturally important castles in the UK. It's mix of styles, French medieval, Renaissance, and Gothic Revival, give it an appearance which looks much older than it really is. Although not technically a castle, it served as a much loved mansion to many famil...

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (buried at Minstead, and mentioned in another of your videos) references the Bailey and the Constable's house in his historical novel The White Company. Well worth a read for lovers of Christchurch and the New Forest.
4.08 I thought that I had been hearing ghosts, what a relief to be told that they were only goats! I must get my hearing tested….
Thank you for this excellent video. I have lived in Highcliffe for over three years, and it is very interesting to learn about its history.
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it!
its huge , fnnr fnnr [ were you being rude young lady hee hee great as usuel xx
I visited Christchurch many times as a kid although I can't have seen very much, I didn't realise it to be so interesting.. thank you!
Isn't there a song about it? From the 60's?
Thanks for uploading interesting videos as usual.! ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️
It is a miracle the nazis never made it to uk shores.! I know there were many British covens that pulled their energy together to keep the uk shores safe. Many of us are grateful to them. Apart from the many brave souls fighting to keep our freedom. I believe their the reason were not speaking German now. Blessed be
❤️The somewhat plain exterior belies the incredible interior, one of the finest examples of “Gothic” architecture in the World. Great also that sections remain from the Romanesque period.
Well done Nic. I've been following your work for some time and, in my opinion, this is the best, most professional video yet. Well done. Please keep it up!
@jamesapps7895 Thank you, James! This means a lot 😊
I live just under a mile from Maiden Castle. Walk my dogs there most days.
how dare you tease us
I’m a fairley in the US and just discovered this part of my ancestry. Amazing to see videos made about my family back in the day!
So is A Grotto the No.1 item on your Christmas list? Keep Wyrdly Walking!
Another lovely informative video. X
I bet the interior looked awesome in its day, sad to see it in ruin. Thanks for the upload, I live in NZ but I used to reside in England. I do miss visiting these old sites.
If this was a Saxon road, that’s a lot more than 300 years…and holloways are far more likely to have been prehistoric in origin. So probably more like 3000 years or more. Wonderful secretive places. Don’t you wonder how many animals use them when humans have gone home?
What a building, can't wait to visit. Thanks.
Winchester is my home and I have been to this wonderful Cathedral many times but I still enjoy other people's views. Thank you for such a lovely prospective.
Love Winchester, not as touristic as some other ancient Towns/Cities. ❤

75 meters, 246 ft, for those of us in England who are old enough to know😶
See all that countryside….thats maintained by FARMERS… take note townies who like to visit in the summer,,, and Starmer/Liebour.
Wow, this brings back some memories. I've lived in the USA for the last 10 years, but when I was a kid we lived in Verwood, and I went to Cranborne Middle school, just round the corner. I definitely miss the beauty of Dorset. You've captured that beauty perfectly ! There's a few other very interesting places very close to Knowlton. One being what we used to call Horton Folly, but from Google maps it looks like it's now called "The Philosopher's Tower" - just some wonderful, but strange small building in the middle of a field. Another is in a small wooded area just slightly NE of Cranborne Middle School. In the middle of that area was a small hill fort called Burwood - at least that's what we were told by a teacher who took us all for a walk up there many years ago.
I'm glad it brought back some fond memories! A lovely part of Dorset to grow up in! I'm aware of The Philosophers Tower but haven't investigated yet. Not heard of Burwood, though, so I will take a look! Thank you! 🙂
QUESTION...............WHAT TOOLS WERE AVAILABLE IN 1079 AND WHERE DID ALL THE STONE MASONS AND OTHER TRADE RECEIVED THEIR TRANING..............??
I believe stone masons trained as apprentices to learn the trade alongside more skilled Master Masons. Once they had mastered the craft, they would belong to a guild known as the Free Masons Guild. As for tools, various sized chisels, hammers, trowels, and borers for drilling were often used, as were compasses and rulers for precise measurements.
@@walkingthewyrd "various sized chisels, hammers, trowels, and borers for drilling were often used, as were compasses and rulers for precise measurements" ..................??? HAMMERS AND CHISELS DID NOT BUILD THAT PALACE............!! SEE................................... My Lunch Break @Mylunchbreak
A grand day out. To recreate that cathedral today, would be virtually impossible.
It's a work of art!
Great video Nic. Love the new way your doing things. 👍🥰👊
Thank you lovelies! 😊
@walkingthewyrd 🥰
Watched it again, mainly because of the choirs, but of course the cathedral itself is magnificent. Thank you
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it both times 😄
I thought this was on the Isle of wight?
No, this is in the city of Winchester in Hampshire, firmly on the mainland.
I’m batch watching your videos, you have the perfect voice for describing the history associated with these old places, great videos.
Thank you! Very kind. 😊
I love Avebury, awesome place. Have you ever been to Stanton drew stone circle, same feeling as Avebury and same atmosphere, thanks.
Stanton Drew looks incredible. I haven't made the trip there yet, but would love to!
Netley Castle across the road from the Abbey is also haunted by a Woman.
Interesting! Thank you. A return trip may be in order!
Of the nine levels of Hell, have you often wonder which level Henry VIII ended up on? I certainly have and when you visit these places you have to wonder.
Oh, absolutely!
Nic since I found you I have always enjoyed your every work. However those which include churches or cathedrals are the best! Thank you for all of your videos!
I think they might be my favourite to make! I just love the history and stories they hold. Thank you for watching!
@walkingthewyrd I am very glad that the church videos may be your favourite and I will tell you why they are mine...I find comfort knowing that centuries ago the people enjoyed the churches as they clearly did as evidenced in the buildings themselves. We need a return to this reverence of the church and God. I feel both are very much lacking in our lives today. We and our lives and our country would be far better off if this was the case. This is my personal belief, but my honest belief, Nic.
I believe magic was built into the places shown in this video,, as does the host of this channel have a magical glow about her,, Thank You for showing us such beauty.
Thank you! 😊
I'm constantly stunned by hollow ways, just the depth of them, how old are they, must be millenia.
Another splendid video Nic. So ...... I guess it is "goodbye" to the bloopers segment!
Not necessarily, Dave! If I catch a good one, I'll be sure to share it 😄
Dave! I love your vids, too. Regards to you and Logan. All the best.
I know netley, worked there back in the 90s, And about a mile down the road, is what's left of Florence nightingale nursing school as mentioned in Sherlock Holmes.
Having read out the prayer/poem you didn't find yourself besieged by eager, but undesired, swains I trust. Keep wyrdly walking! Bye!
Virtually all other chalk figures are most likely post 16th century created by rich landowners as follies, or by the military such as the ones west of Salisbury.
Hello 👋😀 Beardo sent me, to be honest I thought I was subscribed already.... Good video, good information. Re-subbing! 😆
Hey! Thank you, and welcome back! 😄
What a lovely video. I forgot how beautiful the cathedral is. I wonder if there are any ghosts there 👻
Apparently, there is the ghost of a limping monk seen wandering around the outside of the cathedral...
So this is your new style you promised us. Well! I loved it. Great photography and narrative. Although I do like seeing your face, it doesn't really matter if that's the sort of quality you are producing. I look forward to the next one. xx
Hey Lionel! I'm glad you enjoyed it. I will pop into the video occasionally still 😊
Hi Nic I forgot to ask you how you got the shots of the original church footings outside of the cathedral. You must must have been somewhat above the railings. We were there yesterday and it's impossible to get the same angle as you did without being 8 feet tall!. Did you have a drone or a step ladder . Haha
@lionelmarytravels6003 ha ha! Well now, I didn't climb the railings you'll be pleased to know! I just had a long handle attached to my camera for a little extra reach! 😄
