Just to confirm, as a lot of comments are saying that it must be more than 300 years old. Many holloways are much older, but multiple sources I read on the internet specifically about these holloways, said Hell Lane and Shute's Lane are believed to be around 300 years old, so that's what I went with 🙂
Interesting that there are exposed stone faces alongside the lane. That supports a more recent (eg 300 years) age as these tracks have been intentionally excavated, probably to ease gradients for wheeled vehicles 300-400 years ago, rather than some more ancient holloways which have been worn down over thousands of years. These might be much older than 300 years but underwent major repair work in the early turnpike era. Great video as ever
Hey all! Apologies for the nasal sound to my voice - I had a terrible cold whilst filming this 🎻 I'm pretty sure I've edited out all the sniffs and coughs 😅
Good video as usual Nic. The Holloway's have been used for centuries so no doubt there are many ghost stories 😊 You were just down the road from me with this one I've walked these routes many times!
Weird, beautiful and eerie - in a kinda cool way. It’s a very interesting walk and I can see why you like it. It’s amazing that it’s all natural, outstanding place. Thanks for sharing. Blessings ❤, 🎃=Happy Halloween,😊.
Great video Nic - you have really captured the atmosphere of those lanes! I think you made a good decision to turn back on Hell Lane . When Logan & I visited there last year, it was like a small stream at the bottom (we sure got our feet wet) ..... and that was in the middle of the Summer!
Hello Nic. Thank you for taking us to such an amazing place. I went a couple of years ago and loved it. Wonderful views and such a atmospheric journey to get there. Thanks to your vlog i will visit again very soon. Beautifully presented and filmed, as usual. Can't wait for your next one. Adore this channel, thank you so much. 😊
I am so glad you got to Shutes lane .I have stays In a cottage in the lane and walked up to Colmers in the morning .Have a look at Pildon pen one day .
I often holiday in Brittany and Normandy and these sunken paths are everywhere. Didn't know they were found elsewhere too, or that the name Holloway must come from them.
Since it is almost halloween over here, this looks like a great track for the headless horseman. No doubt a good area for highwaymen back in the day. Thank you for the video.
Great video as always did anyone else say to themselves ' get that orchestra oof my mountain ' at the end of Hall of the Mountain King? (al la the wombles)
Hi Nic, glad you got there ! It is a magical place indeed! You made the right decision not to go too far down Hell Lane. We did the walk about 5 weeks ago, did a circular walk from the junction of Shutes and Hell Lane , it brings you back up Hells Lane, and even then the bottom was a river, diversion through field, then a muddy , deeply rutted , walk back up Hells Lane ! Just started watching a program on BBC I player which you might like , Charlie Coopers Myth Country. Lots of weird stuff . Take care . Alan
The most famous Dorset Holloway is the one used in the film The French Lieutenats Woman, staring Meryl Streep. She uses it to get from Weymouth to Lyme Regis and the Cob. It is shown in part several times in the film.
Oh wow!! I loved the carvings in the sandstone, as you said...very Lord of The Rings.... release your inner Hobbit 😂, beautiful scenery as with all your walks Nic. Loved it.
UA-cam just popped this on my homepage. Glad they did! Fascinating! Although, when you said they were 300 years old, I actually thought 'is that all?' I assumed that they were medieval.
Loving your channel. How can we help get exposure to your channel to drive viewership? I think you really deserve to be seen by more. Content is excellent, and production quality is too.
Thanks so much! Really kind of you to say this. I think as viewers, watching and liking and sharing is all you can really do. I'm absolutely thrilled to have 4K subscribers though! I guess I've got to wait for the UA-cam algorithm to find my people 😄
Did I see a carving of Homer Simpson 🤔. What an amazing place, I can just imagine the Fairies from a Richard Dadd Painting living in the Holloways 🧚. Another great walk ❤️
Thanks for watching! These holloways are so magical to walk and I believe there are quite a few to explore out in the west country - not just Dorset. I hope you find one!
2:55 You just know folks have made a side path to under the overhanging tree roots to take selfies of Hobbits Hiding From Nazgul! Wonderful wander, great great photography, editing and music (Hall of the Mountain King ❤❤❤)
Thank you! I was torn between Hall of the Mountain King and Sugar Plum Fairy! The troll connection with Mountain King swayed my decision. Glad you enjoyed it. 😊
It's beautiful there, love how green everything is. The carvings or pictures in the sandstone are fascinating. I wish I could go back and observe some being done. You went further down the lane in the mud then I would have been willing to. Thank you for sharing your adventures with us. Sorry I missed it when you 1st uploaded it. My life is pure chaos as of late, just going through hell. I hope to see you and DPI out about eventually 😂 Tata and take care
I wouldn't mind (if I had the money and opportunity) putting some wildlife cameras with good night vision in a holloway, to see if any interesting beings frequent them at night... probably just animals, but that's still cool, and could be useful data for ecologists and such.
I saw this video and was inspired to make the journey to see this place for myself just last weekend. It's pretty incredible. The carvings in the rock mixes conventional graffiti (TRACEY N DARREN 4 EVA 1992 - let's hope those crazy kids made it, we're all rooting for them) and the esoteric - faces, sigils, demons, pagan symbols - plus a few Homer Simpsons. Hell Lane is pretty impassable without decent footwear (I gave up more or less at the same point as you did). Didn't make it up Colmer's Hill because the aftermath of Storm Darragh was raging, and some of the trees in the lanes were shedding hefty branches and I didn't fancy the exposure (either from the weather, or from local news reports with headlines like "Unprepared City Idiot Gets Brained By Falling Tree During Severe Weather That Already Had Many Official Warnings". Don't want to be pretentious, and I don't usually subscribe to such notions, but there is some spooky-ass ju-ju going on here.
@AmbientDawn this is my most favourite comment ever! I chuckled throughout! It's mind-blowing that someone would take a walk inspired by one of mine, but, here we are! I'm glad you enjoyed it, though. I agree very much about the "spooky-ass ju-ju!
@@walkingthewyrd Aw, thanks! Glad I could amuse rather than offend (note to self: Now THAT'S the motto for my future internet when I become God-Emperor of Space and Time). 😁 And of course you're going to inspire people to visit places - after all, that's what the channel seeks to do, isn't it? You can hardly expect wyrd-fixated pseudo-hippies to watch videos like this and stay at home, can you? It was so well worth the journey. And yer channel has thrown up some other possibilities for fun days out - namely Burley in the New Forest, and the Hellfire Caves. Actually, Shute's Lane reminded me of Puzzle Wood in the Forest of Dean. Well worth a visit if you haven't been there - possibly the inspiration for Tolkein's Mirkwood. More like a cross between an album cover by Yes with a 1980s fantasy movie (Krull, Legend, Labyrinth, etc), but still with a certain mossy spook-factor.
I’d love to explore those amazing lanes they remind me of a story called Rogue Male by Geoffrey Household … where this fugitive who is an assassin on the run after he fails to kill what we assume to be Hitler and he’s perused back to England where he finds that Nazi sympathisers in high places are out to silence him… hides out in a Dorset lane that could have been in the authors mind when he wrote the story sometime in the 1930s … the fugitive builds a hideout high up in the undergrowth …. A good read
love your videos, discovered your channel recently and subscribed. I recommend a book you may have already read. "Alfred Watkins, the old straight track" it was published in 1925 and covers holloways and a ton of other stuff that feature in your videos
If this was a Saxon road, that’s a lot more than 300 years…and holloways are far more likely to have been prehistoric in origin. So probably more like 3000 years or more. Wonderful secretive places. Don’t you wonder how many animals use them when humans have gone home?
I like your video-But-This Hollow is overated and disappointing I was there on Monday mucky slidy green tinged mess of a place -Hyped up beyond expectation -That is my view 😢😢👍

Nearly 100% again, thank you 😊
Many such Holloways in neighbouring South Somerset as well. All are slightly surreal and primal. Thanks.
Hi Nic, what a great video, great walk and very beautiful landscapes, thank you for sharing
Most welcome!
Good video as usual Nic. The Holloway's have been used for centuries so no doubt there are many ghost stories 😊
You were just down the road from me with this one I've walked these routes many times!
It's got to be the most beautiful part of Dorset. You are so lucky to be living nearby. Thanks for watching! 😊
Beautiful country side thanks Nic ❤
Thanks for watching, Hugh!

You certainly find some fascinating places to visit, yours is fast becoming one of my favourite channels. You deserve more subscribers.
Thank you! Very kind!
Great stuff, Nic. 🫶🏻

Aww thanks so much! I love that my video has inspired you to revisit. It's certainly an enchanting place for a walk. Enjoy! 😊✨️
Nice carvings, reminds me a little of Cudworth Stones near Rotherham i visited and love the holloways 👍
They are magical places to walk.
Nic you have a gorgeous lovely accent ❤
The road is so deep that it would have taken way longer than 300 years to wear down. The clue is in the Saxon name so suggests perhaps 400AD onwards.
All sources I read said these particular ones are thought to be around 300 years old, but some in other areas may date to the Iron Age.
@ that’s interesting, thanks for replying.

Must have been lovely walking Colmer's Hill in the morning!

I think they are in abundance, but some are a little more magical than others.
Wonderful location 😊
I thought so too, Mystic Mimaw 😊
Amazing scenery very spooky and otherworldly ! Thanks for a intriguing video 🤔👻👍
Thank you, Martin! It is a very enchanting location. ✨️

What very interesting place(s) Nic! Thank you for taking us along. Always stay safe! Best Wishes Nic. Just a note to say I love all of your videos!
Thanks Buz!
Great video as always

What a gorgeous walk! And a perfect day. It looks like some of the sandstone carvings are old and some are more recent. Thanks very much Nic!
Glad you enjoyed it, Barry! Thank you!
Wishing you a Happy Halloween! England is quite beautiful, thank you for taking us along with you to these amazing locations.
Happy Halloween to you too, William! Thank you for watching 😊

Yes, it can certainly be a tough walk in places! This was my first holloway but I hope to walk more. They are so enchanting. Thank you, Alan!
Thanks for this! Always wanted to see a Holloway. 🙂
