Wrong side chargers should pay double the charging cost at Tesla Superchargers
The great prophet Bjorn Nyland said it best - the right side which is the wrong side vs the left side which is the right side. Charging holes that is. And with Tesla opening up some Superchargers to any vehicle, we have problems with right side vehicles blocking bays.
I don't blame these drivers - they bought the Wrong Car but they're being invited to use these chargers by Tesla. I get blocked at this Supercharger in Bristol, England. By a wrong-side Audi who is saving nearly 50% by using the Tesla supercharger instead of the Ionity chargers next to them.
Tesla set the price for charging. Tesla register each non-Tesla, know the layout and design of each supercharger site. Like this one where they install V4 tombstones (yay) in-between bays rather than at the end so that they won't do a reach-around (boo).
Tesla need to set the price accordingly. Block two bays? Pay two times the cost.

    Pretty ridiculous view point my friend. Tesla made the decision to open up their network knowing full well this would be the case with non Tesla EVs. Doing something like charging double for using their network would be counter to the point of opening up the network as most non Tesla owners would not use it then. The real problem is the lack of chargers in general. They need to become plentiful like gas stations for EV adoption to reach full potential.

    "I'm just being controversial here" - very true and a somewhat disappointing attitude. I don't agree that the left side is the right side etc as charging stations should be designed to accommodate any CCS2 charging port position currently available. You're creating a negative based on Tesla's inability to consider what opening up the chargers to other brands actually means. If they are going to open up some chargers to all they should make sure, before they do that, that the chargers can be used by others without this complication. The fact that, in some cases, Tesla superchargers can't do this, where other operators can, is unfortunate but a result of the charger design which other providers have considered in their design and overcome. I've never had a problem, or seen a problem occur with non Teslas (or indeed Teslas) on non Tesla chargers. I drive an Etron Q8, if I go nose in, the charger port is in the same place as a Tesla, just a bit further away. In most situations, that is fine. There has been one circumstance, in Germany, where I parked lengthways because the cable would not reach in the way (V2s I think) intended. There were 12 chargers and only 1 other car, a Tesla - so there was no issue. I stayed with the car and if the bays had filled up, I would have moved on. I don't know the specifics of the Q4 Etron in the video but it could have been the charger limiting it to 60kW, shared with others, the temperature, the % state of the battery or other issues which are not car related, I drove my q8 Etron 324 miles yesterday, got an average of 2.9 miles per kW. I'm happy with that, given it is on 22' wheels, winter tires and is a large, relatively luxurious car. I charged once, at Ionity in Bristol. I needed 20% charge to get home with 5% and it cost me 53p per kW including VAT (subscription). It actually cost me 44,4p per kW after VAT. The Tesla chargers on the same site and open to non Teslas were 51p per kW rising to 62p per kW inc.VAT later in the afternoon when Ionity stayed at the same price. Also, just to say that I have hired Teslas on many occasions in Europe and the US and their charging performance at Tesla super chargers, and their actual range hasn't been anything to write home about. I tested Teslas before I chose my first EV, an Etron 55 and now the q8 (tested m3, S and X before the S and X went left hand drive only) and now, given recent events, the chances of me owning a Tesla are non existent. Teslas and Tesla Superchargers are not the only answer, as owners/some youtubers seem to think they are - look at the options before deciding. Teslas may be for you, but also, they may not be. Having said all that, and if I was the Q4 driver and the Superchargers were that busy, I'd have gone to Ionity 🙂

    • @justgetatesla
      @justgetatesla 15 годин тому

      I’m asking a simple question - do you support Tesla’s right to set charging costs? Everyone seems to approve when Tesla undercut the other networks, so the principle is established. If people support Tesla setting prices then how is the objection to what I am saying that Tesla would set prices?

    • @philhartley7564
      @philhartley7564 13 годин тому

      @@justgetatesla Every charging operator has the right to set their own charges and they do that so your point is not really relevant. If you had worded it differently, it may have been relevant. What you are actually asking is not what you have just said but, do users, Tesla owners or non Tesla owners, think Tesla should charge more for non Tesla owners who might, because of Teslas poor design, need to use one bay, making a second bay useless for Tesla or non Tesla owners? I only think that the option of "doubling" the charge should only apply if it stops another user from charging on an available bay. If, as my example said, I am charging on one, and blocking another, two but there are 8 more bays available and during my time there, there is not the demand which means I stop others charging, why should I pay more? I'm not compromising a Tesla drivers ability to charge nor am I using more electricity. Maybe they should spend the money, that would otherwise do on having some sort of monitoring system, on ensuring that their chargers work for all vehicles. Either that or make the superchargers exclusively Tesla and suffer the financial consequences as Tesla sales fall and the sales of other manufacturers increase. Fine with me either way.,

    • @philhartley7564
      @philhartley7564 13 годин тому

      @@justgetatesla I also think that all charger operators, including Tesla, are setting public charging prices at a level where there is only a small saving on ICE fuel prices. In these (relatively) early days they have to cover their costs and they know that a allowing for a significant % of charges at home, they are getting what they can, when they can until the user number increases, the infrastructure is paid for and the market becomes more competitive.

    I really can't get over the entitlement sometimes. There is no "right side". What there is, is the right cable length. Tesla opened them up, so that's the way it is, they aren't 'your' chargers. They are Teslas chargers - they say who can and can't use them, not you. I have had 2 Teslas over the last 6 years and now I'm in a BMW and I still use Tesla chargers. Yes, it's inconvenient if a car blocks two bays - but that's the way it is. The incessant 'fanboy' community is something I've long disliked when I was a Tesla owner and videos like this do nothing to sway those concerns. And now that Elon has gone off the rails and shown his true self, I'll never buy one again.

    • @justgetatesla
      @justgetatesla 17 годин тому

      There’s nothing entitled about it. There is a charging standard in terms of plugs - CCS2. That happened by standardisation- which is good. We could further standardise - with kerbside parking required as we go forward it makes perfect sense for the left side to be where the charger hole is. I thought one of major features of the V4 chargers was their longer cable to allow non-Tesla’s to charge without blocking. If the Audi had parked to the left of the stall would the cable have reached? Ironically the only time I was blocked was by a Tesla using the wrong charger and blocking both of the only 2 stalls at a non-Tesla charger in Barnstaple where there are no Tesla chargers. Sadly the owner couldn’t see the problem from his perspective!

    They already pay more than Tesla drivers. Via higher chargers per kwh or a subscription payment making them a tesla member. On v4 chargers the problem is that people don't know the cables are long enough to reach most areas regardless of how you park 🤷‍♂️ Tesla should provide clear guidance to owners.

    Who says the Tesla is even "on the right side" and the Audi is on the "wrong" side. King elon opened the chargers up for non Teslas. What I see is two cars that are both on the "RIGHT" side for THEIR car. Your perspective of which side is "right" has been decided by your concensus view that these chargers are for charging Teslas, which they aren't. They're for charging all cars. King elon says so. If they're for all cars, then they are for use from whichever side the short-ass cable reaches to.

    I get this! I have a Tesla, and another non tesla EV. It would be annoying if you needed it. But, there are only a few stations open to non tesla, its more expensive for non tesla, and in reality most people don't use them that often. Also, the open ones are often quite slow (only managed 50kw at Keele recently, on the Tesla) and the nearby non tesla chargers might be faster. It is odd that Tesla is giving away its one big advantage though - good infrastructure (and efficiency). I would argue that the non tesla tariff should be higher anyway as other non tesla chargers are still more expensive - some might be using the superchargers just because they are a bit cheaper than grid serve or ionity. Fair to say if they carry on like this, the case for other EV brands improves, especially as efficiency and build quality improve.

  • @robinallen7356

    Wah wah wah, king elon said some other people can use my chargers and I'm a carist. I discriminate against cars I don't like the look of that are doing what king elon said they can do. It's not king elon's fault for letting people use my chargers. It's not king elon's fault for choosing not to spend a few quid on longer cables like other charger manufacturers do. It's the fault of those awful audis. Wah wah wah.

    • @justgetatesla
      @justgetatesla 21 годину тому

      It’s very odd. You approve of Tesla setting pricing when it favours you but not when it disfavours you? But it’s the same principle - you either support Tesla setting prices or you think they should be set by a regulator…

    • @robinallen7356
      @robinallen7356 21 годину тому

      @justgetatesla you don't know me, and you make a lot of assumptions here. I don't use tesla chargers AT ALL. I don't use them because unlike other manufacturers, king elon has decides to go the cheap route on building his chargers and not support 'all' CCS cars. He only supports 'most' CCS cars, where others like Ionity spend more on development and testing to make sure their chargers support the full market. It's very odd. You support other manufacturers making chargers that can charge all CCS cars, but when it comes to Tesla you don't expect the same from king elon as it doesn't favour you.

    • @robinallen7356
      @robinallen7356 21 годину тому

      @justgetatesla ... you either support king elon making chargers that support only a subset of CCS cars, or you think that support for all cars should be set by some kind of regulator.

    I'm sorry, but you are aiming the blame in the wrong place my friend. I have a BMW i3 and the charger is on the other side to Tesla's, it's not the "wrong" side, it's simply the "other" side. Other EV users like to use Tesla chargers because they are cheaper by almost half in most cases than the Rip off DC charging stations elsewhere so of course they are going to use them if they can. On a V4 I can park nose in and use the bay a tesla would so I do, at a small inconvenience as then the cable is blocking the drivers door but I do because that is the most considerate thing to do, you know, looking at it from both sides instead of being pig headed about it. On a V3 with the short cables I would have no choice but to park on the other side though and I would do so if I can because I have as much right to be there as any Tesla driver and that is not an "other" EV drivers fault. Some other people with different EV's might not have any choice even with the longer cables. I think, if it bothers you that much, you should write an email to Tesla instead of getting on UA-cam and pointing the finger in the wrong place. Just one more thing, If I could afford a Tesla, I would get one for all the benefits they provide, but I can't afford one, not everyone has the choice.

    • @justgetatesla
      @justgetatesla 22 години тому

      I did intend this one to be a bit controversial. You said - understandingly- that you use Superchargers because they are cheaper. I get that - I got why this Audi did it. But Tesla - like Ionity - have the right to charge what they like. As I suggest. Are you this upset by Ionity?

    • @clivectmob
      @clivectmob 22 години тому

      @ No, not by ionity, but all of them. If people are to see that electric cars are the future they need to be supporting that instead of making as much money as is humanly possible. It’s disgusting how much it costs compared to home charging. Honestly I only ever use public charging occasionally so It wouldn’t suit me to have any kind of subscription. So I do pay the extra for non Tesla owners. It’s all about being as considerate as you can but ultimately if you need to charge and have no other choice and a right to be there, your gonna charge.

    • @justgetatesla
      @justgetatesla 21 годину тому

    First of all you own a Tesla you don’t own a single £ of a Tesla charger. The Audi driver is an idiot for charging on the wrong side, unfortunately you get these everywhere and as an ex Tesla driver then he should of had more common sense. It would have helped if he parked square for a start. I only use V4 as i just don’t like to block a charger up. Maybe charging companies should also charge Tesla drivers double the cost when they use other charges I don’t know how many times I’ve been to IONITY and a Tesla is parked up charging and considering they’re supposed to charge really quick I pull in with 5% and left with 80% and they’re still sitting there, work that one out. Don’t know why they are side on maybe an upgraded site rather than a new site. It’s all about being considerate to all drivers, the same can go for the ones that park their car in a charging bay in a gas car, like I say you get idiots that drive all types of cars and that sure as hell doesn’t exclude Tesla drivers. Lets not forget get that Tesla has taken advantage of government grants which as like many have enabled them to build more charging sites. This is no difference from someone who is filling their car up with petrol and then spends another half an hour shopping in the garage buying a Subway or a Greggs order Costa Coffee while someone else is waiting to fill up with petrol, like I say it’s being considerate for other drivers. Unfortunately like I say you always get idiots and morons but that doesn’t mean to say you have to penalise other people that are considerate to others.

    • @justgetatesla
      @justgetatesla 22 години тому

      I’m not suggesting they penalise - I’m suggesting they set a market price. And if you’re taking up two bays the market price would reflect that.

  • @JohnoEx
    @JohnoEx 22 години тому

    Sorry mate but you are way off base here. Tesla is in the wrong here, they should be fined for not installing long enough cables for these chargers. For many of these open for all installs Tesla takes government grants and so they need to cater for all EVs as per the requirements.

    • @justgetatesla
      @justgetatesla 22 години тому

      I did intend to kick off a debate as I wasn’t exactly being serious. There is a valid question about pricing though- if it’s a site where cables reach then be cheap. If it isn’t like that charge in line with the market for non-Tesla. If they were 74p to match Ionity or 85p to match Shell you can’t object.
