Is A Mixed Reef Really Easier Than An SPS Tank?
Hey man can this light be enough for a 60 gallon 4ft long tank ? I currently have 2 50 watt nicrew lights but im not too happy and my torch and even acans are dying.
I wouldn't use these for that shape tank personally - an Evergrow IT5012 would be a much better choice. Or maybe a 48 inch AI Blade. But for what it's worth, unless your lights are turned up too high, I'd bet money that won't be what's killing your corals...
@@ReefDorkXtra i did an aqua spin test at my lfs and phosphates are at 0.3 i think that is a huge problem so im doing a big water change and adding chemi pure blue. Any thoughts?
September 2024 update - UWC agreed to pay an EPA penalty of $226,652 and to stop selling "unregistered pesticide products".
Brilliant video. Can i ask, would these settings be ok for a tank with only soft corals?
Yep
😂but at least it works It’s proved that works
What settings are you using with the prime?
ua-cam.com/video/_RSxla7IUws/v-deo.html
You wouldn't think to just cut the velcro to fit? Really?
Would this also work for an aquarium heater for a 20 gallon tank?
No, heaters draw too much power for this
Hi, if you could please answer, would this pump work if it was only 60%-70% soaked in water? im wondering if i can use this in my paludarium but the height of the return chamber is around 10cm. And if so, will it make noise if it isn't entirely under water? Thanks!
It'll work, and I'd imagine it'll still be quiet but it's not ideal. It relies on being submerged for cooling.
@@ReefDorkXtra thanks for the quick response! So it would also be quiet?? Not sucking in air? It's for a constant water circulation paludarium so if it gets hot by not being submerged, it may be an issue 😅
@@stigblue I'm guessing to be honest but probably not noisy and probably no sucking air.
In the product manual it says the water level INSIDE the device should be on the water level line
Hello Alex how are you? How does the red sea ato works afther a year of testing? Kind regards Kim
Really good - it makes more noise than I'd like but otherwise I have no complaints
@@ReefDorkXtra thank you 😊
Long-term update! I sold this after 2 years when I broke down my tank. No problems to report - RF stuff can have connection issues but for whatever reason this never did. It ran fine with no problems and the roll change process was easy - I've made a video showing that process here ua-cam.com/video/kxv8Rikr1bI/v-deo.htmlsi=hEruWSErpAoHN8zA Build quality-wise, it held up with nothing breaking. The end of roll notification is useful, but it's very inaccurate - when it said I have 7 days left, it was more like a 6 weeks! The roll lasted about 6 months on a 40 gallon tank in which I fed one cube of frozen per day. The water clarity was always very good on that tank and my average nitrates over the last year were 17.2. Nitrates did bottom out a couple of times but that was because of my refugium. Hard to say for sure, but I think this will have SOME preventative impact on nitrates, but if reducing nitrates is your goal, this isn't the best. But if you just want water clarity, with a small benefit to nitrates, this is great.
Thanks ! That IS a real test !
Hello like always your video’s are great. What would you chose between the clarisea or reef factory?
Reef Factory or Red Sea - the Clarisea gives me problems all the time.
@@ReefDorkXtra thank you for your opinion 👍🏻
Great review! You brought up good points in relation to how to install the unit. 👌
Thanks for the great information it helps a lot . I'm sold and going to get rid of my 2 x gen 4 pro and 2 x gen 4 . I do tank setups and maintenance so lets see how the coral growth is. What i like is the par reading on these lights as you showed. This will save on electricity by not running on 100% all the time. The other factor is the heat sinks are working excellent as your demo by getting rid of excess heat. This way again your led chips will last so much longer. With the amount of repairs I'm doing on gen4 pros and gen 5 range its crazy . Thanks again for the information its highly appreciated. I'm all the way from South Africa.
Hey alex! I am considering using this over a IM mighty jet. Any updates since the original post? Im reading the comments here and the reviews on BRS and its making me a little hesitant.
I broke the tank down after 6 months and sold it. When the buyer set it up, it developed a fault so I had it replaced under warranty.
next time, just staple the new roll to the old roll and roll it out. You don't need to take everything apart to change the roll.
What is your audio setup? The clarity is excellent
At this point I was using a Sennheiser mke 600 into a Zoom H6. I've since upgraded my soundproofing and have switched to a Sennheiser MKH50 which is noticeably better
I recently bought an mp40 and love it the mobius app is great! I had bought two reef wave 45’s originally over three years ago because they were cheaper. and I had no end of trouble with them probably paid more repairing them than what I would have buying mp40’s I would be very wary buying any Red Sea products now.
Also couple months ago my Ecotech versa m2 pump stopped working so I’ve changed to ai xis 90 model because it works on mobius app but I forgot about the battery back up option will this lithium alternative connect to ai axis model ??
No, unfortunately this is 12v and the Axis 90 is 24v I believe. It only works on the Ecotech stuff because their battery backup port is 12v...
Omg my power went out for 8 hours the other day & I lost 3 fish I’ve got Ecotech battery back up but it must have ran out of power absolutely guttered
I think that one should compare Kalkwasser rather with Carbocalcium than with AllForReef🦊 than, AllForReef and Carbocalcium are both based on Calcium formate = the formic acid salt of Calcium. I wonder why Calcium Citrate, Calcium Acetate, or Calcium Lactate are not used. One can buy all these salts from chemical companies. there is however a video about a calcium reactor that uses vinegar instead of CO2: ua-cam.com/video/sC8FtsXnAvg/v-deo.html This would produce calcium acetate.
Excellent video my Ecotech backup just didnt backup after 3 years, I ordered and installed this and it works great backing up 2 x MP40's in East Sussex :)
you know you can cut the velcro down to size with scissors right? 🤦
Is there a special grade of magnesium that you need to look for? Or is every grade/brand of magnesium safe for my tank?
There's probably a point you don't want to go below - the Intra labs stuff is fine but if that's not available where you are, ask on a local Facebook group what people buy in your country
Hi Reef Dork, i’m struggling between The Reef Flare Pro and a Radion XR 15 Pro. They got different blue colours (at least according to the Name). Do you notice a big difference between Indigo and Royal Blue?
I believe Indigo and Royal blue is the same thing - 450nm on the colour spectrum
Is this the Prestige Reef method 😂
🤓
when I dose the magnesium it changes my salinity, any idea how to counter that or do that in a proper way ?
Any 2 part dosing system will increase your salinity but it should be very minimal. But all sorts of stuff does too so regular testing and adjusting is the way.
How do you know how much to put in your tank ? What are the figures of how much to add to how much it will raise mag over 100L?
Never tested the potency, I just dose, test, increase repeat...
Yip I buy from the same place Alex , also I mix my own calcium and Alkalinity saves you alot of money. Trace elements from tropic marin 1. 2. 3. Easy. All in a 5 ltr containers. Alkalinity 500g sodium carbonate 25ml trace 3. Calcium 2000g 25ml trace 1 25ml trace 2. Magnesium 2000g
What a great little tip for saving money. Thank you for sharing 👍
I thought there were two different magnesium products you need to mix to use it.
Yeah I think he uses magnesium sulphate too
Great video Alex between you and Ryan you're both spoiling us all the last few weeks with the extra videos ( I'm not complaining lol) 😂
Well said, sir. It's amazing how cheaply you can dose a tank. I use Arm and Hammer washing soda (sodium carbonate) for alkalinity dosing. You get about 3.5 lbs for $4 here in the US. Been using it for years with clean ICP tests. It mixes slightly cloudy, but it's around 20% of the cost of BRS "pharmaceutical" grade sodium carbonate. Too many folks drinking the proverbial KoolAid. As long as there's no serious toxins/metals in your additives, everything is good to go.
You need 2kgs of magnesium chloride to make 5 litres of magnesium mix!
So 2kg mag flake+ 5kg (Ltr.) water , right ?
@@EIY_Kumar add 2kgs of mag flakes to 3L of water then top up the container to 5L. It'll probably be 4L ish of water.
I have been mixing my own Alkalinity, Calcium & Magnesium for many years following the formula given by Esox on Ultimate Reef. His formula for the magnesium mix is slightly different from yours: 130g Magnesium Sulphate Heptahydrate with 92g Magnesium Chloride Hexahydrate to 1 litre of RODI. The other two elements are much easier with just one item per litre. The only other thing that I do differently now is to use a small power head or pump to continuously agitate the water, I’ve found it’s more stable when transferred to the dosing bottles.
Is it the same procedure for calcium and alkalinity? Do you need to add trace trace elements to each solution?
Similar procedure but yeah you need to add trace. Aqua Forest 1, 2 and 3 work well - might do another video on those later...
Good Sir, Would this Magnesium salt raise salinity in an established tank?
Nope
Afaik this is only the case when you use 2 compounds together where one has sodium and the other one has chloride in it. For example sodium carbonate and calcium chloride. When you use those two together your corals will use up the carbonate (alk) and calcium ions and what's left is sodium and chloride = NaCl = Salt
This will slightly lower the sulfate concentration in the tank. Some magnesium additives are a mix of magnesium chloride and magnesium sulfate for that reason.
Ooh that’s a great saving on Red Sea Mag! How much mag did you use? Was it 500g? You mentioned £6 but a kilo is £9.99 and your link shows a 1kg bag.
Ah, forgot to say! It's 2kgs to make 5L. I bought 2x 2kg packs which gets you a discount.
@@ReefDorkXtra Thanks bud.
Hello, I am writing from Italy and I apologize if my English is not correct. Congratulations for the very useful video as was the one that explained how to replace the original battery. I would now like to purchase this lithium battery backup system for the same Vortech MP 40 pumps. I have to get two. The link rightly takes me to the Amazon website UK, but only some indicate products can be shipped to Italy. I therefore kindly ask you to confirm that the products are this one: Lithium Battery: TalentCell Mini UPS Uninterrupted Power Supply 27000mAh 98Wh Lithium ion Backup Battery with DC 12V/9V/5V Output Adapter plug: DC Power Adapter 5.5 mm x 2.1 mm to 3.5 mm x 1.3 mm, DC in line socket Female to DC Male Plug, Coaxial Power Converter for CCTV Equipment, Video Surveillance Camera, LED lights, Notebook, PC I wouldn't want to order something similar but wrong. Thanks and congratulations again!
Yes, that looks right!
Worth noting that AFR is DRAMATICALLY cheaper when you purchase it as a powder and mix it up yourself. Comparing just the liquid AFR price against Kalkwasser is a worst case scenario... I'd personally never really recommend buying the liquid unless you absolutely refuse to mix it up yourself (in which case you probably wouldn't want to use Kalk anyways). Solid video, brother!
How's the pump getting on? Looking to get one for my 180L but I'm not sure what size to get because you're running the axis 20 in that little 12 gallon at 70%
I sold it after 6 months of having no problems, but the buyer set it to 100% and it wouldn't work, so I'm sending it back to get repaired/replaced. So I've had 2 of these now and they've both developed faults. But for what it's worth, I've just bought the 90 for my 100L tank. If I were you, I'd go for the 90 on a 180L.
What's with these cloackly geezers using the finger? I'm assuming they weren't happy to be making this video, even though their channel seems to be reef, and by extension aquarium stuff the last guy was also water based, in the case of the ro/di for pure water, both being water based. Is it something in water circles that makes them bitter to be making their video, like what crawled up their assholes to annoy their viewers so many favorite comments LOL
What kinda puffer fish is that
It's a mimic filefish
Ty good show 💯
If i do a 10 gallon water change every week in a 55 gallon do i still need to dose kalkwasser or all for reef ? Im still learning....
Yep, absolutely. Test your calcium, alkalinity and magnesium weekly and you'll see a drop over time (assuming you have corals).
@@ReefDorkXtra my tank has been running for about 8 months i have around 20 lps corals and 2 big gsp rocks. Can you look at my latest short video and let me know what you think if to dose kalk or afr please im still learning.
@@Coral-reef. I won't be able to tell, but if you have that many corals you'll definitely need to dose something - best way to find out is weekly tests for alkalinity, calcium and magnesium
@@ReefDorkXtrahey man im still confused about this. I dont have a automatic top off i do top off manually so how do you recommend i dose kalkwasser since my ph is low at 7.4
@@Coral-reef. That's probably a false reading but forget about pH and just dose kalkwasser based on your tank's alkalinity uptake
Are the little red nipples on the ends there to try to reduce crusting up? I haven’t fitted them on mine, but have considerable buildup from my RZ Complete…
No, I think they're just there to hold the tube in place. Do you dilute your RZ 50/50 with rodi water? If not, that should fix it.
