    I have experienced quite a few bad instructors but stuck with them. My philosophy was if I cant manage a variety of people then perhaps flying professionally isn't for me. However as you point out, primary flying training can initially be scary and during this stage there is definitely a benefit to having a great instructor.

    Don''t even get me started on DPE availability and school's "great relationships" with them. Most farm schools, aka "accelerated", are run by people competing against each other to leave the building. My school has no active instructors who received training from the same school, which seems like a red flag they don't tell you about.

    Great topic indeed! On an additional note, I would add that when students are looking for flight training. It’s important to interview the instructor. I would also recommend doing a flight with an instructor. The key is to find the right mix between instructor and student. As a student this also gives you a chance to see the aircraft and get an idea of how well they take care of them.

    I just spent 100k to get my CFI/II, and flight school denied me a job. Many flight instructors at our school have over 2000 hours cause their class dates to the regionals are delayed again and again. I live in DFW, which is a pretty big hub for aviation. I'm open to doing anything, working anywhere, and relocate. I have no family or life; I just want to fly. No CFI jobs or low-time jobs have been found yet; it's tough.

  • @TheJustinJ
    @TheJustinJ 14 днів тому

    If the goal is private (40-80hrs) then rental is perhaps $6,000-$10,000. Far less than any reliable and decent aircraft would be to purchase. Ongoing expense at 50hrs annually (minimum perhaps 25hrs to stay proficient) will cost around $4,000-$10,000 per year. The lower end for aircraft rental is conceivably less than just hangar rent if you own one. Unless you are flying at least 100hrs per year, and probably closer to 200, there is no cost saving for a private pilot to own their own aircraft. Perhaps a 1/4 share is the best route (1/4 of the price for an unplanned overhaul is a far easier pill to eat than the whole). If you are going to train all the way through to commercial, just get a C-152 and fly those 250hrs start to finish. Unless you get stuck with an overhaul, you will be ahead. And to go for instructor ticket, trade up to or start out with a 172. They can be had in good mid-hours condition for $75,000 or overhauled with a paint job or good panel for $100k and up. (Payments are 12 or even 20 year terms. Not recommended to go that high).

  • @PilotPlater
    @PilotPlater 16 днів тому

    I've seen lots of folks buy a plane who didn't fully understand the non-hourly costs like engine overhaul. Might come out ahead, or might spend more money. I know lots of people who LOVE that they bought an airplane, but cost is never the reason.

    • @PilotJoeFL
      @PilotJoeFL 16 днів тому

      While that is definitely true, I look at it from the aspect that if I bought I could now sell or teach in it and recoup that money. Doing a straight rental from a school, you get nothing back.

    • @PilotPlater
      @PilotPlater 15 днів тому

      @@PilotJoeFL That's true.... or you could have had a $40,000 engine overhaul come early... or have a student or renter do a hard landing and write off the structure.... and I'm sure insurance won't fight you to pay out... You're probably right, statistically it's likely you'd come out slightly ahead, I've just not seen it in practice. Of the 40 or so private aircraft owners I've seen, maybe 1 or 2 made bank, the others spent more money. Not sure the regs near you, but in Canada you wouldn't be able to teach on it without an operators certificate, essentially opening a whole new flight school with operations manuals and that whole deal. Something that people don't often think through before writing that cheque.

      @@PilotJoeFLIn general, if you manage to get an interview and they disqualify you, it's common to never hear back from them. Most of the time you submit resumes through online portals which scan your resume for specific keywords. If those keywords are not present in the way they want/expect them, you receive an automated rejection email; sometimes you don't even get that. If you do happen to get a call, it is usually an HR person doing a phone screen which simply means they are listening for specific keywords also, but may give you a chance to explain things better. If you manage to get past the HR rep, then you may finally get to talk with someone who actually understands what you're talking about. To say it's not fun looking for jobs today is an understatement.

    Great video! When I was working on my instrument rating, about 25 years ago, I was flying with a local flying cub. I went to the airport for a lesson and before we pulled the airplane out, I was standing on the ramp with my instructor and he asked if I thought we should go flying that day. We talked about the forecast…which was sketchy at best. Then I looked at the sky. It looked okay in spots, other areas looked dicey. So I said no. “Good call”, he said and we went home. About the same time we were doing that, a non instrument private pilot was making his way home to our airport from an overnight business trip with a passenger. We learned later that it was his birthday and his daughter wanted him home for a party they were planning. His passenger was a single mom with an infant and she was anxious to get home to her baby. They had already been delayed one day because of wx so the pressure was on. About 10 miles south of the airport, he was scud running below descending ceilings and plowed into the ground killing them both. The passenger’s daughter grew up motherless…the pilot’s daughter grew up with the stark reminder of her father’s death every year on her birthday. Low ceilings can be a death trap for VFR pilots. Instructors and flight schools that don’t get that should be run out of business. I’ve been an instructor for over 20 years and make it a point to tell all my students this story…as well as the Kennedy crash.
