Managing Nocturnal Enuresis
Nocturnal enuresis, also known as involuntary urination or bedwetting, is common among children. It affects about 15% of 5-year-olds and 1% of teenagers older than 15. The condition can cause significant stress and affect quality of life and social relationships.
Monosymptomatic nocturnal enuresis is strongly related to sleep patterns, as children who sleep very deeply may not wake in response to the body’s signals that the bladder is filling. Rarely, it may be related to an anatomic or physiologic pathology.
The condition usually resolves over time, but there are options to reduce symptoms and improve quality of life. Brian Miller, PA-C, MSPAS, lead advanced practice provider in the Department of Pediatric Urology at Children’s Hospital Colorado, says the decision to intervene should be guided by the child and family. If symptoms do not cause distress, observation is always appropriate. Behavioral interventions are often effective, such as voiding regularly throughout the day, double voiding before bed, ensuring daily bowel movements, and fluid shifting (drinking fluids earlier in the day and minimizing fluids one to two hours before bed).
A bedwetting alarm can help condition the child to wake up in response to bladder signals. In addition, the first-line pharmacologic choice is desmopressin tablets (DDAVP), which concentrate urine during sleep so there is less urine production during the night. Alternative treatments include anticholinergics and transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS).

Dear Pinar, Thank you for your presentation. I am a retired Ass CNC . My granddaughter is ODD . Aged 3. She & her mom ( my daughter), live with us. We are at the end of our rope. Having employed all but pharmaceutical intervention. As the tone implies, our intervention strategies do little to improve our granddaughter 's attitude towards bedtime or sleep routines nor to duration of sleep. The anger issues are devastating even to professionals. Treading on eggshells and choosing your actions and words very carefully to regulate someone else's emotions is an extreme vocation.

Reading these comments have reassured me that I am not the only one🥹!!! For years my doctors haven’t took me seriously, I finally got booked in to see a gynaecologist but it is a 5 month wait!!! And there’s nothing worse when YOU KNOW something is wrong with u and also what you are going through is not normal but the doctors dismiss you and don’t take u seriously 😔 It has effected my quality of life, made me leave jobs and don’t even get me started on the painnnn😭 it literally feels like I give birth every month. I just want them removed at this point. But in 5 months time I will come back and update you guys on my journey🙏🏻 pray for me

I recently came off my pill to start trying to conceive. I went on my pill for 7 years to mask my period pain. Coming off my pill the pain has returned and is just the same. I cant believe i have to go through this until i fall pregnant. I stress and worry when my next period will be from the nightmare I have to go through each time. It feels like im dying, I can't move, i throw up with the pain, have diarrhea and feel dizzy to the point i feel I'm going to pass out. Wherever i am at the time my period comes on, i immediately have to get home to bed and try my best to sleep off the pain for a few hours. Its the worst few hours of my life, absolutely excruciating and unbearable, i have put off pushing for help/surgery for so long as im absolutely petrified of it 😢

If you’re female with XY then you most likely have complete androgen insensitivity disorder (different to intersex), which is not to be celebrated. It’s a debilitating condition, and only serves as concrete evidence why genotypical females are the point of reference regarding reproductive capabilities. Happy to answer questions - protect women’s safe spaces! ❤

I wanted to die because of the agonizing pain I experienced every single month all those years ago! Thinking about it now is devastating! The throwing up for two days, the piercing stabbing pain, the thirst and so much more! I hope there is help for the young women going through what I call a crippling disorder of mammoth proportions out there today! It is life changing and incredibly intrusive in a women’s daily life! I remember having to cancel engagements, call out from work and no matter where I was I made a mad dash for home before the horrible agony was to begin! After two to three days of my body betraying me I looked like a person who hadn’t eaten for weeks, my eyes sunken into my sockets and so weak it was difficult to move until I could eat again just to have the whole thing happen again next month! Believe me when I say prayers do not help and doctors were as incompetent as they are today! I had no choice but to take birth control pills and later on the depo provera shot which did help, thank God, but after many many years of suffering and finding the right doctors to finally help me!

Nice, feeling how the bloating and pain receded within approximately two months made all the difference, I simply go’ogled the latest by Tilly Strankten and her Ovarian Cyst Guide and although it really took about 10 weeks for it to totally shrink and vanish I’ve never felt so light and relaxed.

I had IUGR with both my babies and never had to deliver them via cesarean. Had a natural vaginally birth with both. Granted I bled out after delivering my daughter. I was flatlined for almost 2 minutes and had to have a transfusion. Both my son and daughter (3.5 years apart) were born via induction at 37 weeks and when I went in both times for my induction I had already started active labor. Both were 4lbs 14oz and lost a hefty bit of birth weight. My son was in the NICU for a month but my daughter went to the regular nursery. She came home with me 3 days after birth. I was the one with her that had to be monitored. Otherwise we could've taken her home the same day. I was told not to have anymore kids. I'm just not built for it after certain medical things that I went through in my early childhood.
