  • Not all gymnastics injuries are sudden and obvious. Many gymnasts experience overuse injuries, which occur from repeated stress on bones, joints or muscles. Because symptoms are often vague and gradual, overuse injuries may be harder to spot than an acute injury.
Emily Sweeney, MD, sports medicine physician at the Children’s Hospital Colorado Sports Medicine Institute, is a former gymnast, coach and judge. In this video, Dr. Sweeney details the most common overuse injuries from gymnastics.
While many of these injuries respond well to rest with bracing or casting and physical therapy, more severe cases sometimes require surgery. Our team focuses on the least invasive treatments first.
Although not all injuries are preventable, a few strategies can minimize the risk. Dr. Sweeney explains that parents can help their young athletes prevent gymnastics overuse injuries by closely monitoring gradual pain, talking to a healthcare provider and encouraging adequate sleep and nutrition.
