  • Congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) presents a significant challenge in neonatal care, characterized by an opening in the diaphragm that allows abdominal organs to move into the chest. This condition interferes with lung development and cardiovascular system maturation, potentially leading to pulmonary hypoplasia and hypertension in newborns - complications that are often life-threatening.
As fetal interventions for treating severe CDH have been limited over the years, Chris Derderian, MD, pediatric and fetal surgeon at the Colorado Fetal Care Center, reviews the concept of fetal tracheal occlusion and introduces recent findings from the New England Journal of Medicine TOTAL trial. This experimental procedure, now known as fetoscopic endotracheal occlusion (FETO), is designed to promote lung growth by temporarily obstructing the fetal airway. It has evolved and continues to be a promising treatment option for select families. In this video, Dr. Derderian shares insights into the FETO procedure and the comprehensive, multidisciplinary care provided by the dedicated CDH team at Children’s Hospital Colorado, striving for the best outcomes for affected babies.

Amazing work. What happens to the remnants of the balloon after its punctured percutaneously and deflated?
