- Heart disease increases the chance of blood clots. Children with heart disease can greatly benefit from a team of experts trained in managing pediatric cardiac thrombosis.
Children’s Hospital Colorado has established the Cardiac Antithrombosis Management Program (CAMP) for inpatient consultation and the Cardiac Thrombosis Clinic to provide continuous care tailored to a child’s life outside the hospital.
CAMP’s multidisciplinary team of physicians, advanced practice providers and pharmacists helps manage inpatient pediatric patients with heart disease who are at higher risk for thrombosis as well as those who actively require treatment for blood clotting. The program is developing evidence- and experience-based protocols to establish more consistent care standards.
The Cardiac Thrombosis Clinic offers outpatient consultation from a multidisciplinary team of cardiologists, hematologists and pharmacists. Pediatric patients who require treatment for blood clots now have the option of a new class of medications, direct-acting oral anticoagulants (DOACs). They have been used mostly in adults but have been found to be safe and effective in children. Children’s Colorado participates in research to help establish the safety and efficacy of DOACs in children.
