Finlos Lives: The Value of Routine
In this episode I consider how routines can help to organize time but also contribute to a sense of repetition and boredom. I also consider boredom as a symptom of depression in modern life.

    Thanks for the review! I'm searching for a singing mic for drummers and mics like the Shure 56A and this are super useful, because the XLR goes off to the side and the cable is not catching your sticks while playing. But I guess this mic isn't well suited for my use case, because of its high sensitivity to surrounding sounds (the drum kit 2 feet behind it, for example^^)?

    • @finloslives
      @finloslives Місяць тому

      Yeah in my experience this mic is not very directional and susceptible to ambient/room noise. But it's tone is very smooth.

    I need a mic for very loud weddings up to 110db. Do you think this microphone is good for that? And would there be distortion in very loud environments?

    • @finloslives
      @finloslives 2 місяці тому

      I think this could be used in that environment; but yes, I think in situations of loud cheers, booming DJ, or anything exceeding the mic's max SPL (127db) there is the potential for distortion. If you only reach the 110 you describe, I think this could be a very good mic - especially if you are thinking of using it in tandem with a camera to shoot video.

    Thanks, great review. I bought the AT875r months ago, to also use with my F3. But I have a huge issue outside because the gain is super super low using this mic with the F3. I have to boost to hell and back in post to get a reasonable level, which obviously increases noise. Strangely though, I get plenty of gain when plugged into my H6 using the same XLR cable. It's an odd issue and I never found a solution despite spending hours looking online. Have you experienced this on your F3 ?

    • @finloslives
      @finloslives 6 місяців тому

      Thanks for the question and sorry for the delay in response. I don't have that issue with the F3 at all, plenty of gain. Are you using a different cable, maybe? I will do some tests to compare between interfaces and report back.

    • @cryptotrader2779
      @cryptotrader2779 6 місяців тому

      @@finloslives Thanks. Same cable. Tried a few different cables and same issue., but it's much better on the H6 so it's a bit of a weird issue. F3 works great on all my other mics. As I said, it's mainly an issue using it outside with quieter environments like nature. If I use it close-up it's not that bad but I can't help feeling the sound should be fuller. Sometimes it sounds a bit too "thin" compared to other reviews I've seen.

    How does this compare to something like an SM7B? I like it way more aesthetically and am thinking about switching my SM7B out for it. I know they're two different mics but for portability this looks amazing. Am I compromising a huge difference sound if I do so?

    • @finloslives
      @finloslives 6 місяців тому

      The cardinal is a condenser, so you will get a lot more gain and sensitivity than the SM7b, which is a dynamic. It also has a fuller tonal range. Truth be told I am not the biggest fan of the SM7B, at least for my voice. This is such a lovely mic with carved wood body. You might also check out the EV/Blue Raven, which has a similar form factor, but is made of black metal and is a dynamic. That is a quieter sound because it is a dynamic.

    This one has always stood out among the other budget options that clog the market. a totally passable sound. If I had a company that relied on Zoom meetings or anything like that, I’d buy every employee one of these or a Q2U and require everyone upgrade their sound from EarPods and internal mics. Doesn’t take much to get solid audio!

    • @finloslives
      @finloslives 10 місяців тому

      It would work for that perfectly. I see you use the Ethos - I loved mine, but the low-frequency resonance in the capsule was just too much and made my voice sound very muffled.

    • @tjzuppe
      @tjzuppe 10 місяців тому

      @@finloslives Yeah, anytime I use it for VO I take the foam off (but I use the KSM32 more for that). I have a complicated relationship with it for podcasting. A little EQ really does bring it to life nicely. I've recently found some good processing I dig. I also have found a good distance from it over time. Eating it like a dynamic really does overwhelm the low-end. I buy and sell a lot of mics because it's fun, but the Ethos is one I always come back to. Will never leave the locker. I do find that it's almost too lifelike when in a podcast setting with someone using a typical dynamic mic. But no matter how many times I rotate a different mic in for a show, it's amazing how often the Ethos finds its way back onto the boom arm.

    I have the oc16 self noise not that much noticeable if u have a good interface it’s a condensor mic afterall is very quite compare to dynamic mic. Self noise is higher but it also have high headroom so it can handle loud noise the low cut pass should cut that self noise. If u have -10 db on the interface or low pass on the interface itself self noise shouldn’t matter. It’s only a ckr6 capsule which base of ck12 capsule but it’s still a phenomenal capsule. Only capsule that could beat it would be ck12 capsule if my next mic.

I would LOVE that mic in silver or raw metal form. Either way though it sounds beautiful. I do worry though that it might not sound as nice with my deeper voice....or MAYBE it might be perfect since it could keep the warmth and depth but bring some crispiness or brightness to the mids and highs.
