  • In this video I give a quick overview of the sound of the Neumann BCM 705 broadcast dynamic microphone and compare it against some other dynamic microphones.
While it produces a smooth sound when used carefully, it is not a friendly mic and probably not for content creators, and definitely not worth the asking price when there are so many other options for the same or less that are more effective for this purpose.
Throughout the video I use no post processing. I am recording into Adobe Audition using the Lewitt Connect 6 audio interface. You can purchase these mics and any of the audio equipment in this video via the affiliate links below - doing so helps support the creation of this content.

This video is 100% spot on. I have been using this microphone for nearly a year now for long-form narration and I'm searching for a replacement. As said in the video - if you "eat the basket" the sound is amazing. However, having the mic right in front of you with a double-pop shield (it needs it) makes it really difficult to see the script. As mentioned in the video - if you go off-axis just slightly to see passed the mic then it eviscerates the sound. Also, if you "get in to the script" and stray even an inch from the mic the take is ruined. This would be my "forever mic" if I could use it and still easily see my script but, alas, the quest for my forever mic continues...

You might look at either the Earthwork Ethos or Earthworks Icon Pro. I just did a review of the latter.

Did you ever find your forever mic?

@@UnboxerofWorlds yeah, for long form narration I have (where smooth, easy listening is critical), turns out it is the plain old RE20 (already bought and owned BCM705, SM7b, Podcast Pro, Heil PR40, Corona, MD421). Paired with an Apollo Twin with the Manley Voxbox unison preamp it is ideal. Just a few days ago I acquired the WA-73 preamp running to the Apollo line in (no Apollo processing), which, I have to say, easily sounds the best yet. For voice over, where short scripts and maximum impact is needed, I turn to the venerable TLM103. The number of condensers I have gone through is nobody's business! I have found on my journey, the preamp has a *massive* impact on the sound, nearly as much as the mic (my SSL 2+ is collecting dust).

@@voiceovergabe1466 I also use the RE20 as my daily driver. It's a great mic. I do want to branch out into condensers at some point, but I don't think my recording space is ideal for them yet.

for its cost it is better to buy 2 Rode Broadcaster, which I did 2 years ago, only bcm104 is better, but it is too expensive for its capabilities.

I agree. Rode mics are good but a little too much in the highs for my tastes. However, for what they offer for the price, they are hard to beat.
