- Explore the woods with me and watch me paint an oil painting with a limited 3 color palette. A big announcement will be discussed in the video also. Please Like and Share this video if you found it useful. The palette I used was: Titanium White, Ultramarine Blue, Cadmium Yellow Light, and Perylene Red. I actually carry serval versions of the primary colors and choose which ones I will use once I get to the sight. The use of a limited palette really speeds the painting process.
Thank you for watching the video.

I appreciate you taking the time to watch my videos. I would love to make it to your neck of the woods one day......the views and history that is all around you.
That one sure came out great! I love the loose brushwork.
Thank you Wendy. It was surprising how little info I needed in the piece to convey the essence of the environment.
Thanks for sharing your walk in the woods. I am in Vt. Doing a lot of gardening , not much painting, but I did paint on Friday. Good luck with your job, I have enjoyed watching your videos, your paintings are beautiful!
Thank you Lauretta. I appreciate you taking the time to watch them. I did get the job, so am excited to get back to work.
I enjoyed the trip to the woods, great info and very nice painting
Thank you!! I love doing videos that combine my love of the outdoors and painting.
I love your work
Thank you so much....I appreciate that.
Another great video. Thanks for posting, Bruce!
Glad you enjoyed it. It's been awhile since I've done a video since relocating to a new area, but I do plan on getting back to posting new ones.....stay tuned :)
Hope it goes good with the job prospect and the rehab. Great explanations and video work with the painting.
Thank you so much. I did get the job...so am relieved.
Love the style, Same sort of style i would like to achieve. Also love the vlog style video, interesting to see the area you are about to paint a bit. I'm subbed!
Awesome, thank you!
Good luck with the job!!! It hasn’t been that bad here in my part of Texas. Doing some painting and working on projects around the house. Stay well!
Thanks for watching the video. I did get the job....good timing. Things are looking up.
Awesome video I definitely gonna check out more thnx for sharing
Awesome thank you!
Good luck with getting the job Bruce:) I can't buy a painting right now but I do so enjoy watching you. Stay well.. your friend and fellow painter from MN:)
Thanks Julie - Found out I got the job :)...so that is good. You take care of your self. Maine is slowly "opening" up.
I just discovered your videos very recently and really find them helpful. I am a beginner painter and have been super frustrated with my results. Your videos keep me going. Love this little painting. I like the limited palette and how minimal brushstrokes can convey so much. I'd love to be in the drawing! Good luck with your new job prospects
Thanks for checking it out.
I've been painting, too much maybe? I live in Western Canada and spring has just arrived. I love going out in the woods and doing basic bushcraft as well :) Just starting to get into Plein Air work. The painting worked out well.
Thanks...I was happy with painting's outcome. More loose than my usual, but it was eye opening. Next time I'll have to drag along a tarp and my hammock and have a nap afterwards :)
This is a beautiful little painting, Bruce! Very pleasant scene and composition. My favorite subject matter 😉👍
I’ve been spending most of my time painting and finally got outside yesterday morning to do a little plein air, yay, spring is here!
I love to get outside to paint, but am still just beginning that process. I’m not worrying about composition or the results as much as I am about enjoying the experience and getting more comfortable with it. I know I will be addicted w/in a short time. This is the perfect time to practice. So I’m jumping in!
Thanks for sharing you beautiful walk in the woods and your painting.
Thanks Christine. You have a good attitude about going out to paint. Right now....at your beginning stage....you should just go out and pick one painting battle at a time. I would focus first on finding the brushstroke efficiency that works best for you to facilitate capturing your scene quickly before the light shifts too much. Also....just pick one problem each session. Color application one time, accurate draftsmanship another time. Eventually ALL of those skills will come together in a painting. Practice! :)Good luck.
@@habowskistudio2724 great tips, I really appreciate it (= Thank you!
Hi Bruce, Thanks again for a great little video. I live in Canada, north of Toronto. In isolation, I have been painting old subjects again from photos. I also did a still life of a sweet pepper and a big beefsteak tomato, which we ate yesterday (not the painting). That got me yearning to paint in real life. I live next to a protected area with a creek and saw a wild turkey there the other day (on the road in the city!). What I like about this work is the way you approach a forest setting with some grasses in the spring. I like how you picked out a few trees and added some simple but effective little finishing touches, and how you handled the grasses. I’m glad to hear your mother-in-law is doing better and that you’ve got a potential job offer. We all need some positive and hopeful moments as we go through this pandemic! It’s nice to be able to connect through something we all enjoy doing.
Thank you Hunter. It's interesting that you mention painting a still life....I've been having a hankering to do one myself. Last year I bought some animal skulls that are just beautiful with natural light on them. I also want to do some incorporating candy/wrappers/foil, etc. I like to work with contrasts like that. We'll see :) BTW....I did get the job.
habowskistudio Congrats on the new job!
Good luck on your job! I’m a essential worker so I have been a lot more stressed out. I did couple small little things for friends for Easter. I’m trying to get motivated . Hoping being creative will help with work stress and anxiety.
Sorry you have to get out into that environment. I did get the job, so I'll be essential also. Better than not working....grateful right now. Take care.
Love to go painting with you mate
Any time....are you in Maine?
@@habowskistudio2724 no mate, Victoria, Australia
Beautiful work Bruce and great to see the result of only 3 colours used plus white. Also goodluck with the job and hope your Mother in law heals well soon 🙂🎨🙏
Thanks Tez. I did get the job...I start later this week.
@@habowskistudio2724 Awesome Bruce, Well done Mate 🙏🙂
I’ve just watched your video for the third time and I have to say that I am intrigued by the limited palette. I have tubes of paint thirty+ years old as I switch from medium to medium. Some tubes may be older. That aside I am gradually pairing down my palette to cad lemon, cad medium, cad medium, alizarin crimson, French ultramarine, burnt sienna. I see that I can narrow it further. Thank you
Hi - I hope you experiment more. Limited palettes are really useful.
9 x 12 guerrilla painter box is exactly what I have. I love your idea of how you modified the insert for larger paining. I’m going to steal your idea and save a lot of money compared to what guerrilla painter charges for those extensions. brilliant idea of using the frame hanging hardware to attach the bungee cord. Great work and great woodland scene. Good luck with the job hunt. I’ve been experimenting with as many paintings as I can do in my back yard.
Thank you for watching. I LOVE my Guerrilla Box. I'm glad I bought mine a million years ago. I don't think they're the same quality now. The mods are soooo easy to do. Have fun.
@@habowskistudio2724 Just finished the modification yesterday. Works like a charm. You saved me at least $30. Great idea. I've watched every one of your videos. Love them. I've done my own outdoor challenge of painting only in the front and back yard. Amazing what you can learn from scenes you never would have considered before. Nice challenge for quarantine. Keep up the good work, and good luck with the job quest.
Glad they worked out for you.
I just got a poucade box in the mail today. Can't wait for the Louisiana weather to get better
You'll love it.
Hihi please, what is a poucade?
@@lesleykurdi873 it's a plien air easel that you can take anywhere and paint
Good wrk Habowski - great video production, very much like how you handle the camera.
Hi Ron - Thank you! It's been an ongoing struggle to have my brain in two places at once when making my vids. Ha Ha. I now have tons of respect for filmmakers. Trying to combine good interesting footage with a good interesting painting is tough at times.....that is why I sometimes do voiceover....because I need to concentrate on the painting. Take care -
@@habowskistudio2724 Thanks man, you are good, you (Robert de Nero in "Analyse This.")
Love the video, so relaxing to watch! Great insight into how you pick a spot and set up. I want to start timing myself outside, so I don't overwork my pieces. Beautiful finished piece! Have you sold it?
Hi -I'm sorry for the late reply....not getting my messages for some reason. Yes...the painting sold. I plan on doing future offers in other videos. My working method is different for different subjects. When I'm in the studio, I tend to be more precise. I use my plein air work as a more visceral approach...an immediacy to the subject. When outdoors, we don't have the luxury of time like in the studio. Both have value. My studio work allows for more concentration on my draftsmanship, which plays HEAVILY in my ability to capture something outside in a short span of time. My advice is: don't get caught up in the trend of "quick" plein air work. The good ones you see are built on a solid foundation of values and draftsmanship. Too many "sloppy" ones out there. The painting takes what it takes ( in terms of time) to express your message about the subject. Over time you'll find your style/shorthand to give it life. Good luck.
Can you recommend a tripod for the guerrilla 12x9. I need a new one. Thanks
Hi Roxanne - I bought mine YEARS ago and at the time bought the kit from Guerrilla Painter that included the tripod. The box can be heavy, so I suggest going to the G.P. website and order their tripod....not cheap, but worth it. Some cheaper tripods might work, but the box will wobble (Which I HATE) when putting brush against the panel/canvas when painting. The G.P. tripod keeps the box super solid. Good luck.
That should have read cad red medium
Hope you've been hired by now! If not, maybe do more of these amazing oil paintings. Really love this piece especially and the quick, free strokes you've applied. How long did this piece actually take I couldn't tell for sure because of editing. I want to learn more about how you confidently know where to go with the stroke + color so I (try to) reverse engineer your pieces that I want to emulate.
Between filming and painting, the painting took about 1 1/2 hours. It can be difficult to find the right amount of economy in brushstrokes, but I think I did ok in this piece.
