Thank you. I did like the fact that I was realizing a nice beginning abstract area in the trees. I will try again on a non-windy day and in the shade :) Also...I would use some paper towels for brush cleaning/wiping instead of the t-shirt scrap.....it wasn't absorbent enough.
New subscriber here. You had a nice painting started. It could be that casein dries too quickly. I just bought a set for underpainting because it apparently is not easily disturbed by painting over it. Your work is beautiful.
Thanks for taking us along on another adventure! Don’t give up on your gouache, it was good to see a comparison of studio and plein air work. Loved the ocean view, very beautiful and peaceful.
I think this seals the deal....I've been looking at a set of casein on amazon, and you've inspired me to finally hit the Purchase button! Love the video !
Thank you Bruce. It's great to see challenges you encounter some you win others not but it is the adventure helps us to keep viewing. Beautiful place it is worth it 👌 sheila g
How nice does Maine look Bruce, There is a painting nearly everywhere you look. Its on my bucket list also to do a road trip(Mine is to drive from bottom to top of Japan one day) Its great you had a go at new things, Im always struggling with new things, Happy Camping Bruce🎨👍
Hi Tez - Thanks for checking out the vid. You really are doing some interesting work .....the one with the glare on the water with a foreground dock on the left.....great effect. I'm jealous of your ample use of paint....luscious.
You had a great 1st effort. Definitely a big difference between oils and casein/gouache. You have to have a different mindset when using the water based media. I use oils, watercolor, gouache and casein (and a few others) - it always takes me some “practice painting” to go from one type to another, but I enjoy the change and I don’t get bored. Next time you might try using a folded wet paper towel to put your paint on. Helps keep the paint moist longer - you just need to spritz it periodically. You also might consider a small Sta-wet palette - helps keep the paint moist. Looking forward to your next video.
Hi - Yes on the wet paper towel idea....and ...I did plan on using a sta-wet palette, but couldn't find it :( I also want to use a pad of palette paper....I think it will be easier clean up. It was a hot mess, but I like some of the abstract-ish color field things going on in the trees. More practice....in the shade next time :)
Wasn't it James Gurney who was saying that casein or gouache were good practice for oil painters because you absolutely have to put it down and not go back over your strokes ? Or something like that. I like getting into gouache, but never been able to pull it off plein air. Not sure why. The view over the ocean was amazing, so cool, peaceful and relaxing. Lovely spot !
I appreciate you taking the time to watch the video. Isn't that Gurney amazing? I do want to try gouache also....be creative in general...with different approaches. We'll see....
Curious. When you oil paint on a 9x12 you use smallish brushes but using casein on a 5x8 sketchbook page you grab a 3/4" flat. That's got to be frustrating. Why don't you try casein using the same size brushes you use when oil painting a 6x8 panel?
Hi Larry - Good point...lol. I used the brushes that came with the set recommended by James Gurney. I just wanted to try something different...BUT...smaller would have helped.
I wish you hadn’t quit. You are comparing your accomplished oil painting to your beginner casein. It was coming good. Thanks for letting us watch. Of course most artists only show you the great successes. And we all know there are lots of failures. Helen Van Wyk always said not to judge your painting until it’s finished because it’s just not fair to yourself. That you can’t make a beautiful painting if you’re feeling negative. And I bet if you weren’t filming that you would have not felt so much pressure to make it perfect. When I watch James Gurney I can’t believe he’s going to turn that mess into a beautiful painting. It really only comes together in the end. I bet if you go back and finish that painting you will see exactly that.
Hi Kathy - This is going to be long winded - Ha. I think my problem was the scale I chose for the subject and my brush sizes available lacking in the ability to achieve the detail I wanted for the finished product. I use to watch Helen Van Wyk back in the day and LOVED her work...the best painter on those tv shows...BY FAR. I have a book of hers. You're right about artists only showing their best work. I don't have qualms with showing the poor little guys that don't make it :) Over time, with practice, the bad ones become a little further apart. The filming can be a challenge when painting because my brain has to be in 2 places at once....ha ha. I enjoy the process of trying to produce good footage ( look at my old vids and you'll see how bad they were in clarity)....it's like another creative outlet. That Gurney guy is amazing and I aspire to have that talent for the medium. Caesar Santo's oil painting channel is another inspirational channel. He is such a laid back guy with SUPERIOR oil painting skills....humble....just like Gurney. Thanks so much for your input....I'll keep on trucking.
Yes I watch Cesar. ua-cam.com/channels/LQGJvQRzKy6waQFCRr-svw.html That’s my channel. I know what you are talking about with the filming. I’ve been watching you for years. Great job! Love your stuff.
Simply beautiful!! Think I will try, I have been in a slump on painting, but I really like the colors of this. Thank you for sharing!!

Hi....thank you for subscribing. I do plan on some more casein experiments in the future.
Thank you so much for sharing.
You are so welcome! It's definitely a unique medium.

"Guess what? I'm an oil painter!" bahhaaaahaha I had a similar experience!

I guess casein is good for drybrushing textures, not if you want smooth blurry transitions like oil colors.
I thought this was a painting tutorial. 5 minutes in and nothing about painting...zzzzzzzz
