Why I stopped binge drinking
Since 2019, I started binge drinking alcohol. Each time I drank, I wouldn't stop until I got drunk. There was no such thing as just a pint or two. Over the years, I have witnessed how it gradually affected my mental health, my relationship with others and my overall well-being. In this video, I share my transformational story of why I finally decided to stop binge drinking.

Why dating apps didn't work for me

I've had a completely other issue with alcohol. Women have tried to push me to drink and while I fully support someone's right to consume what they want, I myself do not like drinking alcohol at all. If I'm ever to do drugs, I'm more prone to psychedelics, because If I'm going to do a drug, it might as well be one that helps me see into different realities.

Proverbs 16:9 says The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps. Christian philosopher GK Chesterton wrote about how we are called to the great adventure of our life. However, to take part in this adventure we must surrender to having our life be co coauthored by God. This happens when we invite Jesus Christ into our hearts. We find our worth and identity in Christ and when we surrender and open ourselves to receiving his transcendence do we find that childlike wonder again. It says in Matthew 18:3 And said, “Truly, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.

It’s not satire, because the questions occur to everyone who is 29 😄 And if you ignore the following lecture from a 43 year old, and reach 39, you will really regret the next ten years. 1. The meaning of life is to propagate life, all the animals know it, the insects, the birds, they have no doubt, they build their nests, they die fighting for their kids, because unlike humans they are not confused. So have kids soon. 2. Love is a feeling that grows and is based on friendship. If you sleep with someone too early, your hormones cloud over whether you are really friends, and therefore love doesn’t arrive. So try a slow relationship. The best marriages start in the workplace or the highschool or the holiday camp precisely because they are prevented from consummating too early. 3. No man cares about your career ambitions, in fact they are an obstacle. No man needs a woman for money nor derives self-esteem from flaunting her status, any status, fame, 4. But a talented woman is very admired. A piano player, a violinist, a multi linguist, a hands-on fashion designer, a chemist, anything about talent and not status. 5. A man will never leave a dear friend that doesn’t seek to control him and nag him. But pick one who isn’t quick to flirt and chat up people, you can’t trust someonr who is a complete natural at this, as practice makes perfect. 6. Don’t worry, I inow full well that no one can learn from others, so I don’t expect any of this to reach home. Have a great life anyway 😉

The main reason we run into difficulties in loving others is sin, both ours and that of those we try to love. Humans are fallen creatures. Apart from God and His power, we are selfish, and loving ourselves comes much more naturally than loving others. But love is not selfish; it seeks the best for others (1 Corinthians 13:5; Philippians 2:3). Battling both our own selfishness and sin tendencies and dealing with the selfishness and sin tendencies of others can make love a chore. Another reason it can be difficult for us to love others is that we sometimes misunderstand what true love is. We tend to think of love as primarily an emotional response. The problem is that we cannot always control our emotions. We can certainly control what we do because of the emotions, but too often the emotions themselves just happen. But the kind of love God calls us to have for others is the same kind that He has for us. It is agape love, the essence of which is sacrifice. God’s love for us is a sacrificial love, the kind that sent Him to the cross for our sins. He didn’t save us because we were lovable; He saved us because His love caused Him to sacrifice Himself for us. Do we love others enough to sacrifice for them, even when they are not lovable? Loving others is a matter of the will and the volition, not the emotions. God died for us at our worst, in the midst of our sin, when we were totally unlovable (Romans 5:8; John 15:13). When we make sacrifices in order to love someone, we get a glimpse of the depth of God’s love for us, and we also reflect Him to the world. Jesus told His disciples, “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another” (John 13:34-35). Notice He didn’t say, “Feel loving toward one another.” He said, “Love one another.” He commanded an action, not a feeling. Part of the difficulty of loving others is that we often try to do it on our own, whipping up feelings of love where none exist. This can lead to hypocrisy and “play acting” the part of the loving person, when our hearts are really cold toward him or her. We must understand that we cannot love apart from God. It is when we remain in Jesus (John 15) and the Holy Spirit remains in us that we are able to bear the fruit of love (Galatians 5:22-23). We are told that God is love and that our love for one another is both enabled by God and a response to His love in us (1 John 4:7-12). It can be difficult for us to rely on God and to give ourselves to Him, but He also allows this difficulty so that His glory can be seen all the more. When we love difficult people or choose to love even when we do not feel like it, we demonstrate our reliance on God and allow His power to be displayed in and through us. Loving others is difficult because they are human and we are human. But in this difficulty we come to better appreciate the quality of God’s love for us. And when we love others in spite of their lack of lovability, God’s Spirit shines through, He is glorified, others are edified, and the world sees Christ in us. Our human understanding of love is flawed, weak, and incomplete, but the more we look at Jesus, the better we understand true love. Therefore, understanding His design for love is crucial. True love, according to the Bible, is rooted in sacrifice, commitment, and an impulse to benefit the loved one (see John 15:13). God’s love for us took Him to the cross. We know for certain that Jesus was not experiencing “happy” emotions on His way to the cross (Luke 22:42-44). The Bible describes our relationship to Jesus as that of a bride and bridegroom (Matthew 9:15; Ephesians 5:32). True romance is designed to lead to and grow within a marriage commitment (Genesis 2:24) and should be rooted in sacrificial love (Ephesians 5:22, 25-28). Any number of things could make finding true love, according to God’s design, difficult. 1. Thinking there is only one “right” person for us. This is a lie that can keep us fearful that we’re settling for less than the best. Waiting for one’s perfect “soul mate” to show up can be a long wait. Whomever we choose to marry becomes the “right” one for us, because we’ve made a lifetime commitment to that person. The Bible has narrowed the field: our true love must be a believer who is living for the Lord (2 Corinthians 6:14-15); beyond that, God will provide wisdom and discernment (James 1:5). Wise, godly people who know us well can also provide guidance in finding true love. 2. Thinking that a person will or can fulfill us. Only God can truly fulfill us, so we don’t have to find romantic love to have a sense of fulfillment! None of us is perfect, and to expect another imperfect human being to meet every need is unrealistic, unhealthy, and can only lead to disappointment. 3. Not being willing to change or grow. It’s easy to imagine the kind of person we would love to be in love with, but how much effort do we expend in becoming that kind of person ourselves? We all have our own issues that we must address with God’s help in order to be the kind of people He desires us to be. It can be tempting to think that finding true love will magically solve those issues. But being in a close relationship with someone will not fix our problems; it is more likely to expose them more. This can be a rewarding part of the relationship, as iron sharpens iron (Proverbs 27:17), if we are willing to change and grow. If we’re unwilling to change, the relationship will be strained and could eventually be destroyed. This does not mean that every personal issue must be dealt with before we get married. Rather, we should get into the practice of asking God to show us what things need to be cleaned out of our lives (Psalm 139:23). As we become the people God wants us to be, we will be better suited for whatever relationships are in store. We know that God cares about our desire to find true love. When we fully surrender that desire to Him, we release the burden of trying to make true love happen ourselves (Matthew 11:29-30). Love is an essential quality of God, and He shows us in the Bible how real, true love works. Redefining love or trying to find it outside of God’s design is asking for frustration and disillusionment. Surrendering our desires to God, submitting to His will, and finding our fulfillment in Him are the keys to finding true love. “Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart” (Psalm 37:4).

I’m a guy but can definitely relate, I grew up overweight and a massive loser, getting bullied and having very few friends and I now I kind of struggle with feeling good enough. (Also probably doesn’t help that I work in construction and people do not hold back with criticism and constantly shit on each other jokingly). Over the past 2 years I have changed so much about myself and with every new insecurity I develop have worked as hard as possible to no longer make it true but I continue to develop more. I feel like if I’m not the most amazing, incredible, perfect person anyone and everyone has ever met then I’m not good enough.

Omg I can totally relate to the part where you need to be perfect in every aspect or else you just don't feel good enough. I hope we can be kinder to ourselves and know that no one's perfect. And that we're loved and valued no matter what!

I know that in confucian cultures, mental diseases are taboos and underdiagnosed and undertreated. How about in Singapore, that is quite westernized?

I'm actually currently doing a mental health related research in Singapore! It seems like many people are still hesitant about seeking help due to stigma but I think it's definitely an improvement from years ago. Feel free to participate in the research! :) forms.gle/LLKTvD4sy8nbcHpc6

Super underrated video! Thank you Melody, God Bless! Just a quick question though, how can we tell between relationship anxiety vs being with the wrong person/our gut telling us something is off.

Thanks for your kind words! I learned from my past experiences how important it is to trust your gut. For me, one big indicator is how my partner responds to me opening up about my struggles/anxiety. One was defensive and made me feel even more anxious/like there was something wrong with me while the other was patient, understanding and tried his best to reassure me.

Hmm I think that's when you have to ask yourself whether you're truly happy and if this is really what you want in a relationship! Sometimes, your partner might be truly trying their best but it might just be that your values and priorities do not align. I made a video on this, feel free to check it out! ua-cam.com/video/quj7Jyg7r08/v-deo.htmlsi=X-PFLzkS44Q6ezv-@@ItsSimplyAless

Hello! I’m doing this in a couple of months - this video has been quite helpful in showing what the trail looks like and am really looking forward to it! I was trying to spot this in the video but I couldn’t quite tell. Would you mind sharing what you used as a day pack? Asking as I’m currently debating between a 15l lightweight bag or a 20l slightly more structured and supportive bag and I can’t tell which would work better for such a long distance - the lighter bag might be easier to carry as it’s lighter but I worry it might not fit everything needed and might not be as supportive. Any advice or thoughts would be greatly appreciated!!

I used a small backpack, which carried my bottle, sunblock, raincoat (provided by the company), and fleece jacket when I'm not wearing it. I would definitely recommend carrying a lighter bag. The company provides almost everything that you need so we didn't really have to carry much during the hikes :) I'm excited for you!
