Interesting. I'm just writing up a case presentation on this character (in grad school for counseling), and I actually ruled out PTSD based on DSM-5 criteria (they differ a bit from the DSM-IV when this video was made). He doesn't meet a number of criteria. No evidence in the movie of flashbacks, avoidance of certain topics or stimuli, dreams/nightmares, elevated startle reactions, hypervigilance, or cognitive distortions. Basically, only I think 4 of 8 criteria categories can be established from the movie when using DSM-5. (By the way, drinking is not a symptom of PTSD just because he doesn't have major depression or substance use disorder) There's certainly some overlap, but the movie doesn't show enough to diagnose PTSD. He does, however, fit all the criteria of prolonged grief disorder....I realize that wasn't in the DSM when this video was made :), but PTSD doesn't fit in any case. The death of his wife is ground zero for his depression and suicidal ideations, which is common with prolonged grief disorder. PTSD does provide an increased risk of developing prolonged grief disorder, which he may have given his combat history and police work, but PTSD symptoms aren't clear enough from the movie. Good catch with the dated envelope! There are inconsistencies with the time of the story. The police psychologist says his wife "just died," but at some point it's stated Riggs is 38, which puts the story in 1987, 3 years after his wife died. But if the envelope is accurate then it's 1986. The world will never know 🙂

The Freudian trio is a great alternative for those who cannot or don’t wish to make a five-man band or a magnificent seven samurai due to how many people may be required to form the following teams. Another great thing is about this is each role is not necessarily restricted and can the characters the fulfill each role can switch places depending on the story. In the book I’m writing called “The Road Ranger”, the three main characters that come together leading up to the climax fulfill the roles of the Id, Superego, and Ego. Here are the characters and why they suit their roles: Matt Santos (The Id): Eventually he attains the moniker of The Road Ranger after he’s seen in full-body tactical gear, an M4 carbine, and a Glock 19 at his side. However before this, he was a Calivadan Army Ranger who had just recently left military service after six years of on and off combat deployments. At first, his desire was to reconnect with his mother and stepfather. However he found that they were currently going through a bad patch and despite being promised legal protection, Matt’s mother is shot dead which leaves him in distraught. He was promised justice by his lady friend in the FBI but the system was corrupted by criminals. Thereby forcing Matt to find the perpetrator himself by any means necessary. As a result, he would soon gain infamy as a killer of killers of sorts. With some seeing him as a savior while others see him as a terrorist. Maria Garcia (The Superego): Being relatively new to the world of law enforcement, Maria’s desire was to be the best she could be at her job as a federal law agent. However this would eventually come into question after her chief would not allow an investigation of a witness’s murder despite her promising Matt Santos that she would find justice for him (the murdered witness in question being Matt’s now-deceased mother). Although she would eventually form an alliance with Matt once she saw the truth of what was happening with the law, she would often protest Matt’s desire to kill every criminal he sees. Choosing instead to arrest and interrogate criminals for any vital information they may be holding. This is not to say however that she is a pacifist by any means. She definitely knows how to use a gun and will do so if absolutely necessary. It’s just that if Matt chooses to shoot first and ask questions later, Maria instead opts for the exact opposite approach. Miz (The Ego): Despite being very young at the age of fourteen, Miz is actually a very talented individual with hi-tech gadgetry such as computers and mechanical work. He also knows how to reload (craft bullets) though this itself is not known how he gained this knowledge. In spite of this, he is the one who provides the logistics for Matt and Maria before they go out on a hunt together. Whether it’s cooking a mean omelette, putting eyes in the sky (with an aerial drone), or making a whole bunch of bullets for “good use”, Miz can do it all. As long as it he doesn’t have to do any combat, that is. His personality is a mix of Matt and Maria in a sense that he has an unquenchable thirst for knowledge with hi-tech stuff but at the same time, he absolutely refuses to kill someone even if that someone is trying to hurt him.

As someone who is neurodivergent I actually found myself relating to Lars quite a bit and seeing myself in him at times. When I first saw this film I saw a lot of autistic and ADHD traits in Lars and that I see in myself.

What is the difference between being a nice guy with severe violent tendencies even though he never went violent it’s like half of him is very nice and other half shows severe violent tendencies I mean last time he got into a violent confrontation he Punched him acouple times very angry and broke his knuckles made them severely bleed broke his knuckles why they bled he did try to back out any thoughts

I loved this movie. When Lars has Bianca become I’ll, knowing it part of his recovery, I blubbered like a baby.

there is only one hint in the movie that shows he has a sexual relationship with bianca. i agree that his interest centered on having a caring and dependable relationship, but when gus's wife looked at bianca (in her private parts) toward the beginning of the movie, her reaction gave me the impression that he did have sexual relations with the doll.

Wow. These days most people seem to use the term ego in a much different way. It's almost as though a lot of people when using the term ego they are confusing it with the id. Great video that has changed my perspective.
