- In Psych Terms we attempt to describe and define potentially confusing psychological terms while illustrating examples to best visualize it.
In this video we describe three related terms: the id, ego, and superego by offering examples and metaphors that will help you in visualizing them!
id: your wants, needs and desires (mostly hidden in your unconscious)
superego: rules and regulations on behaviour and morality, learned and internalised from the external world
ego: autonomous driver in regulating your behaviour and acting as a mediator between the id and the superego

@@yamerabufakher4854 On the basis that there is literally no evidence for this theory. No research showing such things actually exist or that this is how we operate. You're free to look it up yourself. The psychoanalytic theory is much more a (faulty) philosophical school than a scientific one
Your ID is not selfish. It is your caged inner child. Your spark. Your courage. Your courages spark that chose to live. Like an infant, it reacts when its basic human needs of connection, attention, nourishment, safety etc aren't met. It's what causes trauma.
We are not selfish for having needs. We need to learn how to recognise and understand our physical habits and patterns that we feel and express when our needs are in jeopardy again.
The superego is the one that's actually bad. The power hungry. The materialistic. The superego cages and traumatises our ID (the inner child). The traumatised ID shows itself whenever we hesitate to follow or not to trust our gut instinct. The superego taught us not to trust ourselves due to years of gaslighting. The superego kills the courage of the ID. In addition, our ID has been starved of care, so now we are completely exposed to the superego. The superego persuades us to do bad things. When we do bad things, we're either fully aware and in denial, or so far detached from our ID that we are completely unaware of the damage that we, not only cause, but also the trauma we unwillingly pass on to others . The superego says 'Knowledge is Power'. Whereas the ego says 'Knowledge is Freedom.'
The ego is wisdom. When you think to yourself 'I should have known better.' That's the ego. That's the "angel" on your shoulder. That's your gut instinct. And the more knowledge you gain, the freer you will become.
If you don't know that you're in a cage, the people who built it have power over you.
However, if you have the knowledge of the cage, you can find courage to escape it.
Whenever you turn away from, belittle, or laugh at someone who could share genuinely important knowledge with you, beware that that's your superego. Your superego doesn't want you to gain knowledge and subsequently your freedom.
Whenever you're tempted to turn away like that, notice your superego, and allow your ego to come out and be curious. Stay curious and have the courage to follow your gut.

I can't express it in words how beautiful your explanation of Id, ego and superego is. For the first time, I think that I should pursue psychology ahead for my studies in university,
So correct me if I'm wrong,
But super ego as you said isn't as saint as everyone makes us believe it to be, it is the social construct but again society can make us believe all kinds of stuff be it right or wrong, appropriate or inappropriate, discrimination or love.
Id is your caged inner child, as you said, it does work on the principal of pleasure and instincts though, it wants what it desires immediately like a child, it doesn't think about all the moral obligations that come along the way of being impatient or impulsive. And Ego like a guardian angel tries to mediate between the two and make them both come to a common conclusion.
So if someone doesn't let go of their notions about a person or let's say hold grudges against them would you say they let their Id takeover their ego? Or their superego takeover their ego?
@@km143ps I am glad you found my comment useful. I have been tasked to critic the Chimp Paradox by Steve Peters. I will share it with you when it is done, as this isn't something that I can explain in one brief UA-cam comment. It's much more complex than this as a lot has to do with our upbringing and childhood trauma.
In short, due to our upbringing we've lost touch with our gut instinct, the Ego. Without our gut instinct, the ID is lost and therefore has no courage to take action and make decisions. So, we have to follow what we've been taught. And what have we been taught? Be better, more beautiful richer, more famous, have more, spend more.. because apparently who you are isn't good enough. We live in this fantasy that if just this or that was different, we would be happy. But we're not really happy. And that way of living is very superego based.
I've learned that reconnecting to myself and especially my bodily sensations has taught me to listen to my body's signals, rather than ruminating in my head. The book 'My grandmother's hands' by Resmaa Menakem has helped me tremendously with that.
Once you learn to understand the language of your body, your ID will feel safe enough and therefore have the courage to take action according to your gut instinct, the Ego.
To compare it to the legend of Zelda's triforce: your ID is courage (Link), your Ego is wisdom (Zelda, the embodiment of the goddess Hylia), and your Superego is Power (Ganon).
In body parts I'd say that the ID is your heart. It needs love and safety. The Ego is in your gut. It tells you what's right from what's wrong. And the Superego is your brain. It can only function properly if it is in harmony with the rest of your body.
If this doesn't make sense, it will, soonish...

Everyone crapping on about the music is so unnecessary. You can clearly see that he did what he could to post this information. His drawing skills aren't on par either but he got his message across. I was honestly laughing at the little referee drawing with the mustache. I'm glad this video exists. It helped me study for my exam and understand Freud's weird theory was about. I didn't even realize the music was "loud and distracting" until I read the comments.

Id = bad side (devil on shoulder)
Superego = good side (angel on shoulder)
Ego = reality
Ego= most comfortable self. Unconscious= Your ideal "Other person". Subconscious= who you deep down want to be. Super ego= your corrupt side. It's always trying to overtake your ego. Wow. These days most people seem to use the term ego in a much different way. It's almost as though a lot of people when using the term ego they are confusing it with the id. Great video that has changed my perspective.
This is why I watch animated videos when I need to understand something. People just sitting in the video talking to the camera does nothing for my learning but I get this theory FINALLY!

I don’t think so. I think the ego has become subservient to the id in our culture of gratification and pleasure above all else. It will either serve one or the other, or, it can be obliterated.

I'm a huge music person and yet I was so focused on what he was saying that I barely noticed the music. I guess you have a point though.
We need to see our "ID" at all times. I think is the ID that is complaining about the music.
I know it's not an accurate interpretation but I like to interpret them this way
Id: the most mechanical aspect of the mind. It takes in input and delivers immediate output without reflection. A emotional reaction.
Ego: the mind's projection of the self. It rationalizes and reflects on the actions of the id. It influences the id to act in the person's own self interest through long term thinking.
Supee ego: the mind's projection of others. Able to understand and empathize with others. While understanding people around you is a helpful tool to keep the self safe it can also influence and train the id to act in others interests by simulating being in the other person's perspective. The super ego would still usually have less influence then the ego

Yes, but, to you, it's logically infallible. The super ego is never out of line because you know it's right and you want to do what it says.
External things like social pressure is felt by the ego which then changes how it controls the Id and superego.

A good example is the characters on the TV show Three's Company. Lana was the id (sexually aggressive), Janet was the super-ego (moral compass), and Jack was the ego (mediator who resists the id and tries to compromise the super-ego).

This is clearly created by someone who doesn't understand what the ego, super ego, and the ID are. A person's mental stability isn't caused by a conflict between these systems. What's worst is that he gives them classifications that are outside of these concepts, which further explains why he didn't understand. No, there is no "angel and devils" when it comes to the ego, super ego, and the ID. They are psychological systems that aren't good or bad in their nature, they are very neutral. It shocks me to know that this is what they are teaching you. You'll have a very hard time going through masters if you start with psychology as a good and bad premise.

So is it safe to assume that the ID is where all of our violent emotions are stored such as"Jealousy, Hate, Revenge", ect?
Not necessarily. Urges, pleasures, and bare basic needs for survival (food, water, sex, community) are what the id represents. In other words it represents things in the unconscious which autonomously drives us towards "feeding" our needs and wants and mainly affects our physical senses.
I would argue that actions taken without regard to our basic needs involve the super ego more as they are conscious choices we make taught through experiences.
Violence, revenge, or jealousy stem from the ego since as we grow, our super ego and id battle for control. Our emotional responses, both inward and outward, represent this part.

Ego is logic and makes decisions based on the outcomes desired. It might be id or superego that wins. The id and superego is opposites, subconscious and not logic. Id exists at birth but superego develops as child grows, it represents ethics, virtues..... That's why in Islam a child is still innocent until later age when superego develops-affected by parents, school teachers, rules and regulations.....

@@zNathaniel Strengthening your ego or going to the super ego path, you will cate less about yourself and more about others. You will you can strengthen your ego by meditating, which generally gives you more positive thoughts. Aka being a good person.

its a simpler model. the ego is just the conscious self in this context. nothing to do with excessive self importance

i've never understood why people want to take psychedelic drugs in order to experience an "ego death" when the ego protects us, is an intregal part of the psyche. Maybe they confuse ego and being egotistical.
Having an ego death for a few seconds in the comfort of your own home isn't going to disrupt with the ego's main functionality when you are sober. It's not like you kill off your ego and then your psyche is destroyed forever; it lasts like a minute, tops. Ego death can be therapeutic, or just interesting, and is a very important experience in some religions and cultures.
