Calibrating / Adjusting an Aneroid Barometer
Gave my brother one of these for his birthday today. Shared your video as well. Thanks.
Thank you this has been very helpful
Thanks so much for your posts. I have inherited a mercury barometer. Its threads have become detached from the little pulley wheel. How should I re-attach the threads correctly? Many thanks in advance for your help. John
Many thanks, that answered all my enquiries 👍
My barometer measures hPa how does this measurement related to say what we usually see on the weather news, like 30.1 ?
What is a good , accurate, reasonably priced Barometer for Fishing, THAT...Mounts on the Livingroom wall?
Thank you! I have an old one from MFA insurance. It was a gift given to agents for a certain amount of sales in 1978. I picked it up from an auction a couple months ago. The lady and her husband whose estate was selling, had been MFA/Shelter agents since the 1950's. It may be broken but I want to try doing just a tiny bit of settings changes on the needles and see if it moves any over the next few days. I was an agent for Shelter for about 3 years before I completely retired and this lady was my first employer when I passed my test and got my agents license. Most boring job I ever had in my 50 years of working!! I was so glad I just needed to do it for 3 years to get me to social security!! But, this little barometer does mean a lot because it was hers and it would be awesome if it could work again. It was put away in a box for many, many years. We shall see how it goes.❤
Thank you for share these very useful information.
Glad it was helpful!
Putting it in the zip lock was genius. Thank you!!
Glad to help!
My set air thing can’t move how do I fix that please
Thank you!
Thank you. I'm from England, we bought my father-in-law a barometer from a secondhand store a few years ago, he lives in Poland. He loves it. He recently moved and we flew over to help. The needle on the barometer seemed stuck on stormy weather, despite it being hot outside. I recalibrated it from your video and now it seems to work fine. Thanks again.
How do I get in touch with you. Maybe email ?
My understanding is barometers predict mostly only severe weather. A normal amount of rain/snow will not necessarily cause a noticeable atmospheric pressure drop.
Thank you, wasn’t sure if my thrift find was working as it was moving but all wrong and had no screws on the back, once I found out it was removable from its frame I was able to set it x
Hi i got this new wembe barometer.... itvlooks similsr as the one you demonstrsted with.... but really its been raining all day and still its far to the right???? Van there be something wronh with it?.... and also when I open it there is a tiny button on the backside... what is this for?
Thank You for all the information....👍
This is absolutely fascinating. I love it. Just goes to show how much more sophisticated the native americans were at weather prediction than you would think
Sir i have also antique barometer. I wish it works
Well Thanks a lot for your help!
Glad it helped!
That looks just like the barometer I inherited from my grandparents, except mine says ATCO at the bottom! Thanks for the tutorial.

Please could you help me Mr. Madden? I’ve just acquired a Short & Mason Stormoguide 1932. Now, the problem I have is; there is the plate on the reverse as you’ve shown, but if I rotate this to my Altitude, it also hides the usual screw that you turn to calibrate the Barometer... But both the Plate AND the screw of course move the Hand of the Barometer, and so what do you do in this situation? I calibrated the Hand in the usual way with the screw; but of course once I rotated the Plate - it changed the Hand, and I can no longer get at the screw showing through the hole, unless I rotate the Plate back so it is showing through the back hole again... I would be very grateful for any help you can give. Much appreciated.
Rotate the plate so the hole reveals the screw. Make any necessary calibrations and then rotate back to match your altitude
I just got a barometer delivered from amazon. the internet weather report says pressure is 30.18 my meter says 29.6. yes I've tapped. could you explain? I've had it for a couple of hours, hanging on the wall now. thanks!
probably needs a calibration. Easy to do, just look for the hole in the back as demonstrated in the video
I’m starting our tide clock on a full moon and high tide. Does it matter which high tide I start the clock? Morning or night tide?
no, you can use either one
Where does the air go in
Barometers are not air sealed. It equalizes through any gap or hole in the instrument
Cool!! thanks!
I found a barometer in my basement sealed up in a box but it has no information on who it is made by or any markings and i can't find a similar one online. I can tell it is for a port hole. I put it in a bag and it did move under pressure. I would be interested in finding out its history. I don’t know where to start.
Some barometers have no markings on them. Unfortunately these are hard to find any history on.
@@TheWeatherStore I tested it and it works in the bag but when I adjust it to my local baro reading it doesn't accurately change to match my local pressure as it changes outside.
Thanks for getting back to me again
Thank you for getting back to me on that Mercury Factor
Hi! I bought a vintage barometer and was worried it may have mercury. It looks like the wheel to the right of you in this video. Is there any way to find out whether it has mercury in it? Thanks so much!
Mercury barometers are approx 30" tall to accommodate the mercury tube. Also, look for a tall skinny door on the back to gain access to the tube.
What are some reasons it wouldn’t be working? Loss of that vacuum? Or rusty insides or something? We have an old one unsure if it’s working going to have a look
It could any number of things. I'd have to see it firsthand to know for sure.

I LOVE Barometers! (if you don't mind my saying so - you look good!)
Thanks, well the barometers make anyone look good!
@@TheWeatherStore 🙂
Is it best to have the barometer indoors or outdoors
Indoors, no need to put them outside. Air pressure is the same.
There's nothing more satisfying than seeing such a lovely Precision Instrument restored to its former glory. Thanks for sharing.
I agree, thanks for watching
If it’s not moving and the vacuum is not sealed anymore, can it be repaired?
I usually just replace the aneroid movement
Mmm.
I have a few Barometers. I find they rarely go into 'Stormy' (I live in the UK by the way) but about thirty years ago when we had a spell of recurring and violent thunderstorms and rain repeatedly over a few days in 1992 - it was quite exciting to see the massive change! Quite atmospheric when there’s big and sudden activity in Barometers (no pun intended) as, just as you say; they generally move in very small increments for the most part. More interesting devices than most people give them credit for. I collect Watches and Clocks too, and a bit like those; it doesn’t always necessarily follow that the more you pay - the better the accuracy; I have one particular Barometer that’s extremely accurate (made in USA) but wasn’t that expensive. Plus, I also have a £5.99p modern Chinese Mechanical Watch that is more accurate than my £4.000.00 Omega!! No word of a lie! Thanks for sharing your info.
thanks for watching!
I LOVE Barometers, because as you say; no need to wind them, plug them in or use batteries - you hang them on the wall, and they’re there operating all of the time! It’s always good to tap them as you say; I’ve always done that as I pass it, and you can be quite astonished sometimes how much they can move which tells you quite clearly which way the weather is going! It’s important to note though for those new to them, to only tap them very lightly, as after all, these are precision instruments, and they won’t always respond which doesn’t mean they’re not working, as there may be nothing to respond to some of the time. Thanks for sharing!

Can you still buy barometer and even a thermometer with Mercury and his Mercury better in the reading of a thermometer
I dont think mercury is better than spirit (alcohol) for a thermometer. You can find used instruments containing mercury on eBay. You might have to pick up in person as you cant ship them.
Won’t Work In Space😮😮
in space no one can hear you forecast...😊
So if I want fair weather, I dial the needle to the right? 🤭
would be great if it worked that way!
"...it's something that we can't really sense." My nearly 36-year-old back injury from a fall says otherwise. 😅 j/k...I don't think weather affects my injury site.
I bought a Davis weather stick and it is always pointing down, even in sunny weather. Does it need to be acclimated to the environment before it starts working? I’ve got it right side up with the nail on 🔝🤷🏻♀️
try flipping it around with nail side down. Or it just may have a natural bend that doesnt go past the horizontal. In that case just watch its range up vs way up, ect.
@@TheWeatherStore thanks for your response ♥️
Absolutely beautiful. How much does an early 19th century Wheel piece like that go for? Would love to have it in my collection.
Antique wheel barometers in good working condition generally retail for $1000 on up.
Just ship it lol. Screw the law. I love barometers!
Well the law is one thing, the other issue is that it is difficult to ensure the liquid mercury will not separate during handling. They need to be keep upright at all times.
Thank you for your knowledge. I have my Grandfather’s old airguide Bakelite wall mount temp/baro. I wasn’t sure if it was working because it was so far off the actual pressure. The plastic bag trick was great. It works, just needed calibration. Thank you, again.
Glad it was helpful!
What about temperature?
as temperature rises the water and the air expand which can give a false reading
Thank you for your explanation. I have just a small question: should I tap the barometer everytime I want to check the pressure? I'm asking this because, as you mentioned, sometimes the pointer doesn't seem to be moving. Currently, it's been some days since the last change in my barometer. Kind regards.
I like to tap it. The tapping creates a small shock to the system which will displace any stickiness to the works.
