    Just ran across this video -- thank you so much for this! I've had my grandparents' barometer for years and never knew how to know if it was really working. I tightened the tiny screw on the back, gave it a few gentle taps and the needle moved for the first time! It landed on Rain, which is correct. I've never seen it on Rain. Thanks again. :)

    Thanks for the tips. They do work with me. Vintage barometers can be encountered in the most unexpected places when rudimentary tools like a small screwdrivers or Ziplocs can be out-of-hand like in some yard sales. Testing for that springiness is a good idea that also works for my on-the-spot testing.
    Sometimes, the pointers move a little when I slam-close the car door, indicating response to air pressure. Also, driving over some hilly areas would indicate lowering of air pressure but you can do all that post-purchase.

      Thanks for the car tip. I bought my first one yesterday. It came home in the trunk of the car. I dont know didley squat about them so imagine my surprise when a storm woke me up at midnight last night 🤣
      I have a farm so there was a bit of scrambling to bring goats to the barn (if i know it's not going to rain they can stay in the field)
      As I'm getting dressed to go outside it occurred to me to check the barometer i JUST bought!
      It hadn't budged an inch!
      So here i am thinking it's a bloody expensive decoration!
      After this video i feel a bit wiser, maybe it's just a little sticky. The needle moves a bit if i shake it the way he did. But not much.

    I have my barometer fixed in my RV, I noticed how much it moved when I drove up a very steep road to an elevation of 1,789 feet . another good way to see if it's working

    Great tips - thanks! I inherited a small antique barometer from my parents after they passed away, and there is no hole in the back to insert a screwdriver. But I was able to use the plastic baggie pressure test to see that it was working. Very cool!

      Some barometer makers make it tricky to get to the adjustment screw. Ive sometimes had to remove the barometer from the wooden backing mount to access it.

    Thankyou so much I inherited a barometer over 100 years old and was worried it’s not working……tried the Ziplock bag test and the black needle moved just as you showed…..I guess it’s the weather pressure not really changing! Thankyou

    Thank you for your knowledge. I have my Grandfather’s old airguide Bakelite wall mount temp/baro. I wasn’t sure if it was working because it was so far off the actual pressure. The plastic bag trick was great. It works, just needed calibration. Thank you, again.

    Excellent video that answered my question. Ours is the case where the needle is stuck at the bottom. We just moved to Utah from Florida so I believe something was shaken loose during the move. Thank you for this video.

    I have a few Barometers. I find they rarely go into 'Stormy' (I live in the UK by the way) but about thirty years ago when we had a spell of recurring and violent thunderstorms and rain repeatedly over a few days in 1992 - it was quite exciting to see the massive change! Quite atmospheric when there’s big and sudden activity in Barometers (no pun intended) as, just as you say; they generally move in very small increments for the most part. More interesting devices than most people give them credit for. I collect Watches and Clocks too, and a bit like those; it doesn’t always necessarily follow that the more you pay - the better the accuracy; I have one particular Barometer that’s extremely accurate (made in USA) but wasn’t that expensive. Plus, I also have a £5.99p modern Chinese Mechanical Watch that is more accurate than my £4.000.00 Omega!! No word of a lie! Thanks for sharing your info.

    Excellent tips. I would like to know what precautions to be taken while reading aneroid barometer on a boat while all doors are closed due to air conditioning?

    • @TheWeatherStore
      @TheWeatherStore  11 місяців тому

      Good question, air conditioning will not affect the air pressure. It would have to be a totally airtight (think submarine level) cabin for it add or decrease the pressure.

    Great information subbed 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 I have a question which is one of my barometers has a hygrometer currently showing around 62% whereas weather forecasts are showing 92% humidity. So does humidity vary that much inside and out? I believe barometric pressure inside and outside is the same which my barometers always show as they are always spot on compared to official reading. But as I say the hygrometer varies a lot! Thank you🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿👍👍👍😮

    • @TheWeatherStore
      @TheWeatherStore  Рік тому +1

      yes, humidity is different inside versus outside, especially if you have air conditioning. Barometeric pressure is the same though

    My barometer has two screws on the back. One of them moves the needle. What is the purpose of the other one?

    • @TheWeatherStore
      @TheWeatherStore  8 місяців тому

      Probably just to hold the inner movement in place.

    • @MorrisDugan
      @MorrisDugan 8 місяців тому

      @@TheWeatherStore I found that out before your reply by removing the barometer from the frame, and I found there are two screws holding the case together, plus the obvious adjustment screw. Before I was sure what the attachment screws did, I removed them and then reattached them.
      The barometer now reads pretty close to the local weather report. I've been calibrating it gradually, which has narrowed the difference.
      Not bad for an old Japanese-made Jason weather station I found at a thrift store. I'm glad I didn't kill the barometer.

    mine works, but its the most boring item i have. I do like the porcelain face and lettering, but it pretty much never changes more then a few digits. Im used to antique clocks, and lots of movement in them.

    Do you have to put tiny drop oil in them ?
    The 3 mounting screws I thought were oil points , the one screwed back in , but the other 2 just keep turning into nothing , have I damaged anything ?
    Can you take front round cover off to oil ? Or does takes front cover off upset the vaccum inside ?
    Thanks ian

    • @TheWeatherStore
      @TheWeatherStore  Рік тому

      Hi Ian, I'd have to inspect the barometer firsthand before I give you any instructions. I dont want you to damage it. FYI, there are no oil ports on barometers.

    Hi, Should the barometer needle be reset? I have moved it with the tips you mentioned in the video and I am wondering if its to be reset? or will it automatically move to its correct position?

    • @TheWeatherStore
      @TheWeatherStore  11 місяців тому

      Yes, reset the the set hand daily so you can see the weather trend over the past 24 hours

    Hi
    My barometer changes when placed in bag and pressure applied. However if The Glass covers it, it does not react. Could it be the Glass is wrong and it needs one less hermetic with a positioning needle.?

    • @TheWeatherStore
      @TheWeatherStore  Рік тому

      the needle might not be able to move freely under the glass. It might be rubbing against the set hand.

    I have a nice barometer but I really don't understand what the gold hand does. It just stays still. I Set the black hand to the current pressure here and it seems to be moving. Can you enlighten me? The gold hand has a little knob in the middle of the glass face to move it with and I lined it up with the black hand but it stayed there even though the black hand moves. Is it supposed to move too?

    • @TheWeatherStore
      @TheWeatherStore  Рік тому

      the gold hand is simply the "set" hand and is used like a bookmark. You align it with the barometer hand and when you check it later you can see how much it moved up or down.

    I found a barometer in my basement sealed up in a box but it has no information on who it is made by or any markings and i can't find a similar one online. I can tell it is for a port hole. I put it in a bag and it did move under pressure. I would be interested in finding out its history. I don’t know where to start.

    • @TheWeatherStore
      @TheWeatherStore  17 днів тому

      Some barometers have no markings on them. Unfortunately these are hard to find any history on.

      @@TheWeatherStore I tested it and it works in the bag but when I adjust it to my local baro reading it doesn't accurately change to match my local pressure as it changes outside.
