Tesla 7kW home charging installed for under £550...this is how to do it
Not safe at all! No one follow this guys advice with his dodgy electrician paid to look the other way. Get a proper outside charger installed by a proper electrician and don’t have your house burn down or family electrocuted.
@@macrostheblack 2 years later….still here 👍🏻
Is there a DIY solution, standard 13 amp wall plug way to get 7 kwh?
Most standard wall sockets in homes are designed to handle lower power levels, typically around 2.6 kW (or 10.5 amps at 230 volts). 7kW needs something more :)
@@NunoLima1337 in the UK wall plugs are limited to max 3kw, most chargers don’t go above 2.3 for safety. If you search it there are a lot of fires caused this way with the house electrics overheating.
@@thercsev yep, I get that. A proper Wall Connector installation is coming soon.
Wow that’s good what about PEN fault protection? SPD ? Load management oh yeah that’s what the other £400 gets you. A qualified electrician
@@StevenAttenborough-u9w PEN fault at the board and 1 charger doesn’t come anywhere near to requiring load management with a 100a supply. Looks like you were conned out of £400 🤷♂️
Thanks for replying. Are you sure you know what your talking about? Are you a certified EV installer? Me thinks not. Good luck 🤞 PEN fault protection at the board 🤔 you didn’ mention that ??????
@@StevenAttenborough-u9w I’m not, no. But the person who fitted it is, but ask yourself this…why do Tesla make a 32a adaptor?
The car is made by cheap plastic The car is good looking but real bad quality
@@z87m 100% agree, it’s an expensive battery wrapped in the cheapest body they could make
@@thercsev yeah
I use it for my Tesla Model 3, I have mine set to 75% from midnight to 6am here in Australia which is when it is 8c per kw. During the day I turn the schedule off and when the car is plugged in, Charge HQ will use the excess energy from my solar system which works so well. Depending on the day and how much solar is generated I may need to top up again overnight. We do around 600km per week and on average it cost me less than $20 per week to travel 600km. This app is brilliant.
Would love to see you post more videos!
You mic is sucks
Hi Greenway Electric, I love your content! I'm interested in discussing a potential collaboration. Could you let me know the best way to reach you? Thanks!😁

Holllllllly fuk, can't understand half of the sht you're saying, invest in a good mic or give up making videos. Thanks
I'm down to the last few on my list for my next car and Volvo are still scoring strong. Peugeot is still there and I'm still trying to figure out exactly what VW are offering, especially as I live in Spain (Seat/Cupra). Tesla is popular but I'm afraid the Musk quotient is too high and has to be dismissed.
Love the format of your review. Just bought a used 2023 C40 for $28K (USA). Love it: well sorted, comfy, sporty, excellent build & safety + no Elon. Everything works well together. Great daily driver.
You’re obviously a DEMONcrat! Elon is a genius and you’re just broke and can’t afford a Tesla
...a very bad sound...can't understand anything..😢
So you have to give this random 3rd party your Tesla login details? Doesn't sound safe
Probably still safer than Meta/AI listening to all of us without our consent 🤷🏼♂️
I get one for a month, so i will be commenting later. Thanks good review.
First time soon to be Tesla owner here, great vid thanks! Do you have any recommendations for home charger installs ?
For the UK, I would recommend a zappi. From all the videos etc that I’ve watched about chargers they seem to be the best on the market
Thanks for sharing interesting information if you don't mind me asking what about you electric normal bill will be affected im thinking of getting electric car
I do roughly 1500-2000 miles per month and that costs me £40-50 per month in electric by charging on the cheap overnight rate. I recommend octopus GO, and I have a refer code on my account if you sign up

Oh why on earth did you get married seriously crazy idea 💡
Oh lord. That is as dodge as it gets! You are not really allowed commando sockets without interlick switch in a domestic setting. May want to get that check a trade ptoffesional back and dort it. Certsinly not as per BS7671 requirements. Did the electrician know it was for the EV charger too? The problem with that commanfo socket you have is that the pins can be live with socket open. That is issue for domestic setting. In terms of EV, the absence of interlicking mechanism is a concern. It mesns you could inplug the docket under load leading to dangerous situations. Have you had a pripper EV charging socket fitted?
Hi, I’ve got the charger locked in place and it’s not possible to remove the charger from the socket without dismantling it. The locking criteria is to stop someone who didn’t know (the public) from hurting themselves. As this is behind a double locked gate on private property it negates a lock
@thercsev hi. I dont think it does negate the interlock. The lock is not per say pad lock, or lockabale isolator. In domestic situation any socket like that should be fitted with built in isolator switch, that has interlink mechanism thag doesnt alow you to turn socket on with nothing plugged in, and doesnt alow you to unplug under load either. This would be in any scenario when the installation is to be used by an ordinary person.
Precisely, it is not possible to unplug the charger because of how I have attached it and I never take it out…problem solved 🤣 P.S. I’m going to keep using it 🤫
@thercsev well fingerss crossed
Great video, I have the same setup. Also electrician here, sadly your checks trade friend has done you dirty here. For an industrial socket to meet regulation in a domestic setting, the socket needs to have its own switch with a mechanical interlock. This means you can pull out the plug unless it’s switched off. You won’t pass a periodic inspection report with this one installed. I would get the outlet changed over so it complies and is safer in case any little fingers decide to play with these larger sockets.
On the used market this is in line with a MYLR and MYP and better when you factor in mileage. I prefer the size and styling of the XC40 but am worried about how the limited volvo dealers would handle service and public charging. I've heard Volvo has worked out a deal with Tesla but haven't confirmed it. Also while Volvo design is better, Tesla software is leagues better than Volvo or most other manufacturers At the original price of 60k, I'd try to get an Ioniq 5N. Brand new goes to Tesla where you can get a MYLR for 40k and a MYP for 43k AFTER the EV tax credit. This is helping to drive down used prices so thanks Elon I guess.
Is that PEN earthed?
Pen fault at the board
I am paying for premium connectivity. $99 per year. Seems like a no brainer to me, even though I wish they would just include it instead of nickle and diming me. The only feature from it that I need is the traffic visualization, so I can choose routes to avoid the orange roads. I spend hours every day commuting, so I want it to be as seamless as possible. No offense but the tesla center console youtube completely sucks and my phone is far superior, so I don't need Tesla's crappy youtube. If they had good youtube, that would be a different issue. Tesla could vastly improve the quality of their product by improving the center console. Allow casting from the phone to the console, make the center console possible to personalize. It would be nice if we would stop getting autosteer strikes from using the center console since THAT IS PART OF DRIVING. Also speed up the computer because the current computer totally sucks for youtube.
Great video ❤️ love my Volvo 🇸🇪
Thank you very much for your review. Would be great to put the phone closer to you. Its very hard to hear you because of the background noise.. lovely review tho 🙏🏻🙏🏻 I appreciate it Edit: I noticed you already fixed it the next videos ❤️
I just cant use the cruse/auto due to being stressed if it phantom brakes. Still think if it had additional sensor tech such as lidar to double check cameras it would feel better and I would feel more confident.
Agree, I find myself hovering my foot over the pedals just in case it does something. I still don’t trust it
How much it cost for a full charge from 0% on a home charger
Total cost of around £7 to do 300 mile. This is with octopus go, they are a great provider, I can’t fault them. If you switch to them use my code for a £50 statement credit
Much appreciated
Welcome!
Great video, I was going to go down this route but I fortuitously found a second hand pod point solo 3 for 75 pounds, i left a like on the video
Thanks for the like, appreciate it. I went down this route purely because I didn’t think I would be living here much longer.
Hi mate, did you still need to buy the adapter for the pod point? Got a pod point with my new house and now ordered a Tesla.
Thanks for this review as you looked at the XC40 recharge I know they are both different but we have short listed to this Mach E and the XC40 what do you think?
They are both great cars, I don’t think you’ll get a lot more with the Mach e for the higher price tag. If you need a higher range go for the Mach e, otherwise I’d say Volvo. Let me know which one you go for
@@thercsev I am leaning towards the Volvo due to extra space
I don't think £10 is that bad really. Cheaper than Spotify these days
the audio is bad man,
Did you do a similar video for the BMW i4?
I don’t, I tried to get one but bmw weren’t keen. I’ll keep trying
Nice video, I just want to comment on one thing incase someone is thinking of doing the same thing. The labour you paid is about right for an electrician to run the cable from your meter to where you want it. Most electrician would charge around £500 or less depending on where you are if they have to run the right cable from your fuse box to where you want your charger to be. The other cost then is the charger itself. Depending on the charger you get it ranges from £475 for a Tesla wall charger to around £700-£800 for a Zappi den 2 depending on where you buy it. The thing that cost the most is the charger you get. I hope this would help someone who is thinking of getting a charger installed etc
I will add the socket should be interlocked aka can only turn it on/open the contacts with something plugged in.
@djgoode well spotted. Commando socket like the one in the video is NOT SUITABLE for domestic use. Even more dangerous for EV charging where you often unplug the plug. U can unplug it under load! Not safe. Further more, no option of CT monitoring to ensure installation is not overloading the intake cut out. Ibviously depending on the intake fuse size and demand in the property. If you charge the vehicle at home daily, just get an EV charger. Safest option.
Why don’t you just listen to music and you won’t hear it 😂
I paid 30k for this car as pre registered 1 yr old with 25miles on the clock . I would have bought the Tesla if i had to pay full price, at 30k its a really good deal
How do you spend 1000 pounds on 6000 miles of fuel?
6000 miles by 40mpg is 150 gallons 150 gallons is 650 litres (ish) 650 litres at £1.57 (at time of filming) is £1,000 👍🏻
Did TESLA make your mic?😂 🗑️
No but it made the video description 👀
No pen fault protection. So you need ann earth rod. Also under regs commandos are not acceptable in a domestic setting. The socket is not shuttered I.e live terminals are exposed
Professional electrician installed so as far as I am concerned it has been installed correctly and to code 🙅🏼♂️
You don’t need an earth rod if you install a penfault protection device. Many external single gang outdoor consumer units made for EV chargers come with this
Part right depends on the house earthing arrangement if it’s TT the no earth rod needed. All others would need one. And you can fit a commando in this setting but yes has to be shuttered or as it actually would be interlocked.
No earth rod is required, the charger is a portable device on a plug, therefore as long as the device meets safety standards as a portable device all is ok.
a nice casual review...you did not complain about the inferior sat/ nav infotainment system 😮 (do not do any more accents)😅😅😅
My accent game isn’t great 🙄
For a 50k car to not allow basic mapping features with a hotspot is really not good enough
All in the chase for a bit more profit 🙄 agree it’s terrible
I suspect the manual release in the back is like that so kids cant circumvent the child lock
So what was the report?
I'm not sure if it's cheeky to ask for the money. I can't believe it's so much more expensive in the UK. In the US as far as I know it's $99 per year. I believe Elon wants to put a financial disincentive for every service his company provides that has an ongoing cost to the company. Over time he will likely try to pull more and more things that we can safely think of as externalized costs into included costs or whatever so we don't do moral hazard type economic damage to his company. I believe it's actually a pretty wise strategy. To me the more valid line of complaint is if you believe the quality of one of his cars is not up to the standard you expect for the amount you have paid for it. The issue with this is that this line of thought may lead to him eventually charging excessively for ongoing service, and may eventually set up an incentive structure like at the other big OEMs, where they are incentivized to have parts in their cars that will break, providing a revenue stream for their repair facilities, which is essentially a form of planned obsolescence... which I truly hate. I like that you pointed out the actual amount you had to earn in order to get 400 pounds of cash. I believe very few people realize this, very nice point.
It’s a bit frustrating when it used to be included in the older generation. It’s the subscription life we live now, allowing big corporations with multi billion dollar turnover to keep digging away at our pay checks to appease shareholders….i mean deliver better quality of course 🤨
@@thercsev yeah i am paying lots of money to google and affiliates now and all their services used to be free to me. I pay more to google than i do for my other bills, and it seems like twice a year they send me a brand new bill for something i used to get for free.
that month went quickly for me, thank you
Your car has a build issue. The steering wheel is on the wrong side. You should take apart your car and put the steering wheel on the other side.
Actually the steering wheel is on the right side.
haha. but unfortunately when the steering wheel is on that side you can't drive on the right side of the road. :)@@kalchoudhury8150
Well I do live in the UK and driving on the right over here would probably reduce my life expectancy somewhat 😆
Got a good laugh out of that. Seriously, the clean interior of the Model 3/Y does look easy to manufacturer for either left- or right-hand usage. For me as a right handed person, I would find using my left hand to access touchscreen items a bit of a challenge. I think the biggest challenge would be driving on narrow rural roads in England. I'm used to wide roads with emergency shoulders which are common in the midwestern USA.
@@thercsev omg everyone over there is driving on the wrong side? How dangerous. You must change the law immediately. :)
What Tesla was you comparing this to? A model Y long range?
I have been driving for 5 months, never used any of the premium features so didn't even notice when the free time was up. Sales staff never explained features, just said watch the manual videos.
If you have UA-cam premium, you have UA-cam Music thrown in already, get on it, far better than just using UA-cam normally
From the noise on the freeway I am unsure the Volve is quieter compare to my Model 3
It is quieter…this was filmed before I invested my pounds in a new microphone
In the US it's 99$ a year. not a lot a yeah cheaper than Netflix a month. What those cheeky mean in for you lol when you say a little cheeky. hope I'm spelling it ok. Me living in California I do need the live traffic as it as walls changes day by day. I do have it my wife will use the browser when we are driving. Maybe the hotspot is a better option but if you can afford it why not. $10 dollars won't break your pocket. Starbucks will lol
I have said it’s a bit cheeky based on I have 3 maps on my phone; Google, Apple & Wave. All of which give traffic updates free of charge. All of my previous cars had live traffic included. I guess when it’s the most expensive car I’ve had it’s cheeky that I have to continue to pay more ongoing
