Quick and Easy Way to Remove Adhesive!
My mother gave me some great advice growing up but one tip she gave me four decades ago has come in handy dozens of times. She would use this trick to remove price tags or tape and so I decided to see how it held up against a more common product used for this. It's a battle of Goo Gone verses Williams Lectric Shave to see which product works quicker. Let's get busy!

Awesome 75 Year Old Van Dorn Drill Gets a Restoration

The Van Dorn name disappeared back in 1951 so we know this is at least 74 years old. It's heavy, built to last and deserving of some attention after sitting all those years. I discovered it sitting at a flea market for $5 and I hate to see old tools like this rotting away so I picked it up to see what I could do. Let's get busy! It Died on the Table! Restoring a GE Model TH-20 Drill
You did good super haul. The craftsman sockets were made by several different companies hence some with lines on the bottom and lines on top of the metric sockets.
I'm looking for a good flea market with tools near central florida, Winter Garden area, can anyone help, please
Lakeland has a good one. Not quite next door to you but it's got a lot of tools. Silver Moon Drive-In Theater. Sunday is the big day and you need to get there early. 7:30am is good. I go to that one and then the Plant City one every few weeks. I always fond a lot.
@floridarusticrepairs I really appreciate it, I'm always looking for good tools. Thanks
That is a great comparison! I always have thought Goo-Gone was mostly hype. It never works for me.
Great show, I have never had any success with goo gone so I appreciate you showing this, I'll have to find some, I remember the commercials from years ago. Thank you
Good Morning, I'm in Florida, just outside of Tampa. My project is just getting started with a new home build with a 30x40 building. Like to speak with you about different contractors for my project. How can I get with you. Thank you
You can direct message me at FloridaRusticRepairs@gmail.com
Great video and information.
Thanks! I wonder how many people use that electric shaving lotion to remove adhesives.
@floridarusticrepairs I don't know, I will from now on
I guess I’ll have to add that to the shop
I use isopropyl alcohol for this type thing. Awesome, Mugsy supervising from his wireless charger!!
Any hyper flash???
Easiest way to fix LED hyperflash in these by changing out your flasher. ua-cam.com/video/q9DkWHd8l4w/v-deo.html
@floridarusticrepairs thank you bro
👍
Thanks!
And we have been putting it on our faces?
I hear it works great if you've got glue on your face. 🤣
Great find! I chuckle every time you discard a china/india wrench. Twenty years of working as a mechanic taught me that those wrenches would gladly hang out until I need to bend-warp-twist-cut-grind-weld them to be that perfect time saver-tool! . . . As the previous owner is showing you by his handy-work on some of those wrenches 🤣🤣🤣
Thanks! All of the China and India tools go in bins. I keep them but do not usually try to build sets with them to donate. I have quite a few now and occasionally find a use for them but I don't donate them off to anyone unless I know it's a decent brand. I've found some interesting uses for them sometimes. :)
the socket with the black plastic ring is likely a Craftsman. You can rip off the plastic and the roll-stamping is underneath.
@ Thanks for the info! I've got it in a bin of unknowns but I'll retrieve it and see.
Interesting haul that says a lot about the owner. Seems like someone that didn't want to pay a lot for some tools and wound up with people's broken sets or throw aways.
Yes. mostly a mishmash. Not great haul but OK. The sockets will help me complete pother sets.
@@floridarusticrepairs I probably would have paid much the same to be honest.
I hope you didnt but that junk!
And a lot more. :)
Thanks for the detailed information on that fan. I have just about the same one that happens to have a extra silver box. It almost looks like a can of sardines on the underside below the base cover. I kind of figured that was how it changed it speeds somehow. The real question I have is how to remove the selector knob at the base without breaking that part. I found a broken solder joint that would be much easier to repair if I took the selector switch out. Thanks so much.
Likely the switch knob has a set screw. it's possibly hidden by a small plug in the knob. I think most of these later Westinghouse fans had a screw on fastener to hold the switch in place.
Are these builds dimmable?
Yes, they dim just like regular bulbs.
Good score for $200. The wooden Stanley tool is called a scribe
Thanks for the info!
Indeed
Ridiculous on how much to do for a freaking battery
Modern vehicles are crazy with complexity. I can't imagine most of them reaching 20 years old with all of this technology.
The instructions say to go in then out really slowly. Then do more coats at spacific entervals. It does really well for me.
I did do a very slow pull but it didn't seem to make much difference. Maybe it's the Florida humidity. :) Likely it's my impatience.
That came out fantastic! I am thinking that small handle meant the drill was designed for use in small spaces.
Thanks! That's a good point about using it in small spaces. Considiering the surprising amount of power this has the lack of grip space makes little sense otherwise.
You're going to have to start a museum! Or at the very least open it up to students who can learn about some of the tools that their forefathers used. Otherwise great work, so informative!
Thanks! I do work with some kids to show them how to rebuild these. I let them keep the tools when they're done. Some of them actually use them like they're not antiques. Any kids who want to really put the drills to work are also given a more modern/practical drill to keep with it. Most of these old drills aren't even reversible.
Great job glad you was able to save it.
Thanks! I've found that almost all of these old drills can be brought back with a little effort.
Absolutely! Looks like new pennie. Great work. Thanks for sharing. 💯👍
Thanks! Looks good in the old Craftsman wall box too.
Nicely done. She cleaned up well. Did that originally have paint? I remember using MANY of those old metal ones, some were painted and some weren’t. Perfect ending with Mugsy.
Thanks! Funny you mention the paint. I've wondered why it was that some of these were painted and others are polished. It may be that painting was just an option or to differentiate the models. I have no idea.
@ I know I started using them in the 70s. I remember some didn’t have paint, I think my father had a 60s 3/8 that didn’t have paint. I know I used a bunch of 3/8, 1/2 and 3/4 in the 80s and some did and some didn’t. I don’t know.
@ I prefer the polished look but maybe the paint added more grip so before they switched to plastic and rubber they used painted metal.
Mugsy needed to inspect the final product!
Apparently I took too long so he took a nap.
@ lolol I hope he didn’t think you were a slacker! Lol. Mine aren’t afraid of hard work, they can down beside it and sleep for hours.
@ I had an orange tabby cat named Nacho who was a fearless companion for the first few months of my channel and is in most of my videos from then. Nothing phased him and he was always by my side with Mugsy when I was working on something. Mugsy doesn't like it when I use power tools but Nacho didn't mind at all.
It’s always best to state that you aren’t using “regular” WD-40, just in case.
Yes! I think I say it in every video. I love their dry lube for motors but I wish they'd take the WD-40 label off of the can or at least make it smaller. Maybe even change the color of the can. It can be confusing for a newbie.
It is good to see another domestic tool saved. 😃
Thanks! This one has a surprising amount of power for such a small household drill.
Mugsy is supervising from the start!
Yes. He was with me all through this one. 😺
Nice drill restoration. I agree the handle seems a little short.
Thanks! It's a great drill but if it gets caught up it's going to come out of your hand for sure.
Very nice clean up! Looks good in the display box. Thanks for sharing
I had to re-upload this due to a blank clip.
I had to paraphrase my original comment. 😉
I am so afraid my kids will do the same thing.
Hopefully you can get them interested in building or repairing things and then they'll appreciate the tools. It's a struggle nowadays.
The mechanic tool cabinet is nice, The wood backing on the carpenter tool cabinet was a replacement like you mentioned, They all came with metal backings.
Thanks for the info! I've been wondering about that. They both now have a home on the wall in my workshop.
Looks like a win in my book, good job.
Thanks! this was a good haul.
I have two of these in my house which were installed in an addition in 1960. Still working great tho we rarely use the heater as well. So glad I found your video as I haven’t opened mine up so far but now know how too. 😊 In regard to the wiring, a couple things worth mentioning are that any wiring used in your unit should be of high temperature rating if not already verified. Zip cord/ lamp cord is likely not heat rated for enclosed lighting fixtures and almost certainly not rated for enclosed heating equipment. Obviously unhooked heating element and Led vs Incandescent does make a difference but if a future person reconnects the heater or puts in a CFL or incandescent lamp it could well cause rapid degradation of the insulation. Not likely a problem but electrical work should be done to take into account future work or owners whom may not understand at your level. A couple other items are tucking unused wires into a non enclosed space, energized or not. Capping is great and tape with possibly a marking tag to show its reason for existence. Generally speaking if wiring is unused it should be removed or minimally tagged and disconnected at both ends. Again not likely an issue but future owners/ diy-ers/ electricians will either love or hate you based upon this as well as the safety issue of not being able to safely verify current presence on both ends of the wire. Last item is that removing the junction box can negatively affect heater airflow as it’s supposed to flow upwards between the outer “bucket “ and the heater housing then u-turn downward and past the heater element. These units rely or should be assumed to rely on that air to keep the surrounding parts cool. Removing the J- box, while unlikely, could cause air to bypass leading to overheating. Also in the again unlikely scenario of electrical fire within the unit you have lost some amount of fire spread protection. Not knocking your repair or methods, just trying to pass on a bit of knowledge for future projects. Some may call me nitpicking but I have seen failures and worse for any of these reasons. (Im retired industrial maintenance electrician btw). Thanks again for sharing your repair. I enjoy saving and repairing old devices as well. Awesome quality and repairablity not to mention cool styling and history. Btw the switches are called Despard style and were a thing of the era, space saving and modular. You can still find these NOS and possibly still in production as well as new plates.
Thanks for the info! I'm a certified electronics technician but home wiring is a different animal. not complex for the most part but there are a lot of little practices which you pointed out that I've never been trained on. Before i was filming youtube videos I installed an NOS one of these from ebay into the upstairs bathroom ceiling where one had long since been removed. Fortunately i had a wiring diagram in the box because these are quite tricky. Ironically, after working on this other one I went back and disconnected the heater in that one as well. The third one in the house is still all hooked up as original and I have not touched it. The heater works but for the most part is useless even in FL. The fan just doesn't create enough airflow in that drum to do more than heat up the unit. Still, these are awesome looking so I'd never remove them. I just wish there was a modern equivalent that looked as good.
@ I was glad to find your video as I had searched several times overtime the years to learn more about how it was installed and was wondering if there was any method to vent external, obviously one could engineer it but keeping functional heat would muddy the water there too. I really need to vent both bathrooms outside but installing a separate unit really makes more sense than modding these. Tho you unhooked yours if they are properly installed and wired they really aren’t unsafe but I would replace the interior wiring with fresh 75 or 100C wire. The elements themselves are pretty bulletproof if not beat around and well connected. I would also put each unit on a separate circuit breaker and ensure adequate wiring supply size. Always fun learning new things and challenging the noodle😊
Not valuable is crazy talk
I mean, it's valuable to me but most people wouldn't see it that way. Are you a fellow Craftsman fan?
If I'm not mistaken, vermont tap and die, make snap-on and mac and most tool truck tap and die,i have a 2 mac sets, the very same, just labeled different
Thanks for the info! I had no idea.
Thank you

Beautiful walls inside your shop. And those tool cabinets on the wall. Nice tool haul.
Thanks! I did closed cell insulation on the ceiling and walls and then installed 1/2" birch cabinet plywood with 2 coats of Helmsman spar urethane for the paneling. It really makes the shop feel like more than a regular metal building.
And it is missing the wood handle which explains what that screw hole is for.
I think other tool handles will fit. Not all of them had the wooden handle from the factory either.
Mine is still working but missing the original set screws to hold the blade in place
If you can't locate a set screw let me know. I think I have some spares in one of my tool boxes.
I inherited one. So am looking to restore it also.
It's an odd little saw but seems to work fine as a cross between a jigsaw and sawzall. Good luck with your restoration!
OMG The red and yellow screwdriver straight from the 70s. Dad had 1.
lol! I did not buy that one. I think I've got one from another tool haul. It's an early ratcheting driver as far as I recall. I didn't know it was from the 1970's. Wow!
FINALLY Mugsy at the end for the win! Another great video
He's usually around unless he finds something better to do. :)
Cool finds and if you sold the few name brands (not that you should) and pay for the haul. Honestly, you could sell your discards first enough to pay for these.
I think the cart was likely the most valuable thing in this haul and I gave it away to Tyron. :)
@ always take care of true friends, they are rare
@ Totally.
Nice haul! The craftsman toolbox looks like a Kennedy. I wonder if they made it for Craftsman?
Thanks! I think Kennedy did make for Craftsman. They look identical except for badging.
That soldering gun looks like the one my father had
I haven't tested that yet. I wonder if replacement tips are available.
Definitely restore that machinists chest. I got a Kennedy new in the 70s. My brother has it now.
Yes. I just need to figure out a close paint match. I'm thinking a dark bronze hammered.
