Yup, no roll bar or protection, real men or ?
Natural Color... or B&W that was Colorized?
Wow special thanks to the person with a (probably very expensive) color movie camera who decided to take what was probably hours of film to make this 30m film. I mean the Wizard of Oz just came out two years ago prior. Second special thanks goes to whoever it was who preserved this thing for nearly 80 years. And a third special thanks to whoever found, restored and transitioned it to digital for upload onto UA-cam. The odds of us seeing this in color so clearly with all the behind the scenes is astronomical.
I remember seeing a few of these on the road when I was a kid. This is nothing short of a rolling work of mid-century modern art...one of Virgil Exner's masterpieces of design. The iconic grille, the flaring fins and tail lights, the amazing interior...topped off with the 413 with dual quads on a cross ram intake manifold. This car must have been a shot of pure adrenaline to drive on the open road. I'm drooling...one of my favorite cars for sure.
Fabulous looking car. I wish they still made them.
Of all the Indi films I have seen from the old races this is by far the best one I have seen thanks for posting
I am going out and get a new 57 Chrysler.
I would proudly own AND drive either one of these cars over ANY Cars built today!💕
What years in ww2 did they not run the race?
'42-'45
This engine was a beast
No bias here...rriight...😂
😊😊
So cool thinking that my great-grandparents could be in this video somewhere.
Chrysler propaganda, what a load of bs
Such a casual approach to safety! T shirts! No shoulder safety belts! Did wear helmets, but no roll bars. Great fun to watch.
Super clean. It’s nothing like the 70s full size car rides. They are roomy, comfortable and amusing. Congratulations.
My dad had a car like that one
Wow! That was interesting. For a high school senior graduation project, back in 1973, I had to write a research paper, and I chose "The History of the Indianapolis 500" as my topic. I had to drive to the downtown Dallas library a couple of times on a Saturday to gather notes and check out books, etc. Since that time I have always been interested in the history of the 500. This is the earliest color footage I can remember seeing. Truly a blast from the past!
I got a book about Indy about 1970 for Christmas, still have it. So it was about to the 1969 race. I was sad about the Brits bringing rear engines. LOL. Still had homemade cars till then. Hilarious how long they went with T-shirts and no seatbelts. They still had hammers in the pits till the 60s too. Still had homemade cars till then. I mostly lost interest when they started using plastic airplanes. Pfffft.
Think they got the steering wheel of the towns bus
The Buick and Olds drivers ate DRUNK
Phenomenal footage. Thank you for this Time Machine
I look at old track and then how it is now n wow
Who is the old guy in blue in flat cap I'm thinking depalma?
Love those cars of yesterday. My uncle had a red convertible with a white top
That dash would give you a nasty shock if not disconnected from the transformer.
Powerflite was one of the best and reliable automatic transmission ever produced. The only flaw I remember was the ear on the reverse band would break off and have to be replaced. I’m told you can overhaul this transmission in the vehicles.
'Ross Roy, Inc". Now there's an independent testing firm! lol
BGMもよいですね。
👍
well im ready to sell 1955 cars now any takers...
Personally, I preferred "fluid drive", but "Powerflite" was GREAT!
What the hell ever happened to race on Sunday and win on Monday, the industry still makes cars so why is so alienated from the other, this is why mistakes are frequently overlooked due to lack of real world testing.
Notice during the pitstops, the drivers wearing kidney belts. I guess they needed the suspension set mighty stiff for the brickyard in those days.
We sure we're a classy society In those times..everybody Dressed to the Nines!! Compared to today. Everybody dressing down Looking poor May 1941.!! Pearl harbor just around the Corner. Guess the Japs hit us a lot Harder than we thought ❤
Viva america ! We had rear engined race cars way before The British invasion of the 500!
My mother was one year old.
My grandfather Ray Livingston nicknamed Doc raced Indianapolis and Visalia etc in those days he said it was very dangerous but he loved the thrill 😊
May 30, 1941…the world was at war but the US had not yet entered. 3:14, the guy on the right looks like he may be Japanese-American. I wonder if he was later interned into a internment camp.
That was Chickie Hirashima, and he wasn't interned. He was a top-flight chief mechanic who worked primarily on the Novis and didn't finish his career until about 1962.
To show the advancement in cars there are alot of econo- boxes that could beat the 1941 winning times and still go hundreds of thoiusands of miles afterwards ,some could do it with a full passanger load .
Safety was simple Don't crash
25:27 Unbelievable even in those days that someone allowed a little kid to sit on the inside pit wall. Edit: Upon closer inspection, I think it's a flag..lol
The side profile of that man (7:50) standing next to car could be John Waynes double.
Drivers racing in T Shirts !!
Blazing fast for their time and it took brave men of steel to drive in those cars.
Wild to think the track sat idle for four years after this and was nearly never more.
In six months, their world will change and racing wouldn't return to the Brickyard for five years
When everyone else was at war
When pit stops were measured in minutes...and check out the drivers lean into the turns...wild!
That was me practicing my right hand on piano @6:52-9:34 by the way............no wasn't. Wow! Great tune though.
Love the old footage, but the tune " String of Pearls" by Glen Miller was not released until November 1941. It seems they use that same tune in every movie about WW II. This is May 1941, Hitler has conquered all of Europe and Britain has barely survived the Blitz and kept him from invading. Hitler is now ready to invade Russia next month. Japan is planning it's attack on Pearl Harbor only 6 months away. Makes you wonder how many of these guys in the film will be in uniform the following year and how many would never see another Indy 500.
