    Takes back 35 years (favorably) to a time when I chased and photographed steam trains with a friend who was a world-class train nerd. (Def. "train nerd: A photo was not perfect unless the wheel drivers on an engine moving at 70 mph were in a specific configuration to display the mechanism and no motion blur.) Memories of racing up mountain roads, then hiking through half a mile of brush to reach the "perfect" scene overlook. Standard location shoot: Set up best composition in advance on a tripod. Wait for train to approach. Power drive through half a roll of 35mm as engine reached optimum location. Race to car and speed to next location. Repeat.

    Great stuff!!! We don't have any steam engines anywhere near me. I really need to haul out my PE 100-220mm more often. I was just cursing about that yesterday when a bald eagle literally landed in a tree 50 meters away and all I had was the 100mm MC macro. I swear that eagle stopped long enough to laugh at me. I only got one crap digital shot with my phone. Comically in my bag I also had a 150-400 zoom, cause I'm considering buying a K3iii mono.

      All the night shots were handheld with the aperture wide open to let as much light in a possible. The Asakusa area in Tokyo is lit up super bright so I could easily get a 1/60 shutter speed.

    It's a shame Bronica never build the 35mm-magazines for the GS-1 which you already find in their publications but never saw daylight. Imagine 69mm wide instead of 55 mm wide panos.

  • @SMGJohn
    @SMGJohn 11 днів тому

    I thought pixel shift was a gimmick until I tried landscape photography with it on the Lumix G9, and I did one regular and one 80mp image, and honestly, its shocking how VAST the difference is, if you got a sharp lens like the Sigma are really good for this, then you be surprised how insane, there is literally 4 times more details, its much more detailed than my 5DSR is with its 50 megapixel sensor. Kinda mind boggling to have a medium format camera in a m4/3 sensor size. Its only working with very static things however.

      @SprocketHoles That's a long shot and can be done apparently but no, I was talking about those old slide projectors. When you use a (strong) UV light source (LED) iso the old 💡 you can use your real negative to make a cyanotype print. Same principle with an enlarger but those lenses need lots more light. You can find and old projector super cheap and it's easy to adapt

    Flatbed isn't even a contender. Those would be a dedicated film scanner like Plustek 8300 or Prime Film XA vs camera scanning. I've an Epson V550 (same as V600 - digital ICE) and flatbed scanner sucks for 35mm. It does ok for 120.

    Recently shot a roll of APS film in a Pronea 600i with a new Nikon lens for digital cameras! Those lenses are so extremely fast and quiet, nowadays! The combination of the 90s camera and brand new lens is amazing :) I don't agree with you about digital photography being the death of APS. APS was dead long before digital photography became widely availabe. The film rolls were to expensive, the quality was not as good as 35 mm, most labs didn't invest in the machines to read out the data and often disregarded the format factor and printed everything as APS-H. Also, new 35 mm cameras like the mju or GR1 were about just as small as the APS cameras. I think I might have seen a Canon IXUS or two back in the day, but that's about it - at a time when everybody had a camera.

    Let me first say, I enjoyed your video and appreciate your photographic examples. Thanks. My only disagreement is with my copy of the Nikkor 105mm f2 DC. The only way I assuredly get this lens to focus accurately, consistently is using LiveView mode 1 with pinpoint AF on my D850. Nice way to run the battery down. In addition, the changes in the transitions of OOF elements of the photo are only slightly - and very subtle - in the difference with DC engaged or not engaged. Lastly, as you mentioned, the CA is noticeable when you shoot it wide open. I'm curious, why do you like the IQ over the Nikkor 105mm f/1.4 E ? Of course, I can use the AF of the E version on my Z mount camera with great accuracy. I'm just curious where that lens failed you (with what you like to shoot). The DC version - even if it yielded some advantage - is so much more time consuming for me to use that it makes the process more involved than I want focusing a lens to be. I'll be selling mine soon - and they don't bring a very good return and mine is barely used - and in mint condition. FYI: Interesting that I own used versions of several of the lenses you reviewed after this. They include the 135mm f2.8 AI Nikkor - fun, light, small, and the Nikkor 180mm f2.8 - which shows a lot of CA shot wide open. The 180mm f2.8 was one of my favorite lenses until I purchased a used copy of the Nikkor 200mm f2 VR. Yes, I know. It is heavy, draws attention, and is much more expensive for only 20mm more, and one more stop of light. There is not much I can say about that - as the criticisms are smack on. This said, there is a reason this lens carries the reputation it did.In my opinion, it smokes the 180mm f2 images (and well it should with the difference in weight, price, and VR). I use the lens a lot and mainly for indoor sports with poor lighting and action, but I've used it for wildlife, landscapes, and portraits as well. The advantages (other than an extra stop of light) over the 180mm for me 1. Sharpness. 2. Transition zones of out of focus elements 3. Dimensionality - which many lenses do not possess. 4. No evidence of CA when shot wide open. 5. Very fast AF speed (180mm as you mention is fast, the 200 is faster - and for sports/action that is important to me. Lastly, on the Nikon Z9, the accuracy shot wide open of AF is terrific. I've performed test shots with a 70-200mm f2,8 to the 180mm f2 to the 200mm f2 to the 105mm f1.4 - all shot wide open, and all stopped down to f2.8 or f4. The Nikkor 200 f2 is the clear winner to me and my photography friends. I'd carry the 180mm anyday, and anywhere, but if I want that special look, I take the 200mm f2 with a monopod. ;-) I almost purchased the 200mm f2 Micro Nikkor, and wish I had - at a garage sale. Also own the 200-500mm f5.6 - great center focus, great VR, but relatively slow AF. Thanks again for your video.

    While I like your collection, it very much mirrors a lot of mine, I think For 50mm, even though you have 3 lenses already these can be improved upon for not much money. The f1.8 pancake is the best 50mm Nikkor F-mount lens. However there is a specific version you want to look for as there are a few different versions, all are very nice but one is exquisite. One is all black. The others have a silver band. Of the silver band ones, one has a serial number beginning with 2, it says Nikkor on the face (not Nikon E series) and it is made in Japan, it has a close focusing distance of 45mm, all the others have a close focus of 60mm. That Japanese version is the one you want. The other versions are very nice too and considerably cheaper around £50, while the Japanese one is around £175. Be aware of sneaky ebayers that take misleading pictures. Plus its the smallest Nikkor lens, which is an added bonus. I also love the 55mm f2.8 micro nikkor, but since you have the 60mm f2.8d its not necessary

      @@hschmicknos Nothing wrong with your audio now. Probably something with youtube, my streaming, or my computer. Sorry about that. Your audio is much better when you're not in the darkroom. It is an interesting video.

    @29:08 - Why especially on film you need all the light you can get? I mean, yeah, we got limited ISO [200/400/800 films], yet, shooting 500mm (even 200mm) on f/4 - you will miss so many shots [blurry eyes on portraits] - that you must close your aperture to like f8 or more.

    I really like my F3 but stopped using auto exposure or its light meter in favour of my Pentax Digital spot meter because I found correct exposure wasn't the same as the exposure I wanted, which I *can* get on my Hassy or Large Format. I want an F2, but which one I'm not sure, buying from ebay is out of the question.

    Great video. A few years ago I inherited my father’s Nikon F, a 1965 model.. I appreciate it, it’s build and silky smooth lens when he bought it secondhand in the 1970s. I got hooked on Nikon, but being a poor a student, I could only afford an FM model. However, a year ago I watched a series on UA-cam about all of the Nikon professional F series of cameras and I decided to buy an F2 from Japan on eBay… I haven’t been disappointed either, it’s a much more polished and refined update on the original F. I think it’s slightly smaller, but it oozes quality. Like you, I have the A version of the Photomic head with AI connection. I also like the viewfinder which I find very clear and bright. It takes me back to that long lost time of my youth. It forces you to take a much more considered approach to photography.

    Love the F2, but the cameras was completely off my radar until last year. Got a nice black one for very little with a broken metering prism. I now use exclusively it with the DW-2 x6 magnifier and 35mm shift lens.

      The 6x mag finder and a shift lens, that's an odd combo.

      @@SprocketHoles The experience is similar to using a Hasselblad 500 and WLF; not so good for actions shots, but the screen image is magnificent.

    If the F4 had as good an AF sensor/system as even that of the F70/N70/F90/N90 systems, from the beginning, it would have been more competitive with Canon. It was just a matter of the AF, the electronic part. Mechanically, the AF "screwdriver" motor was a brute, and the F4 can handle nearly all of Nikon's lenses up to AF-S which have their own motors.
