    With the CCD sensor of the scanner, you are actually scanning the color of the film. With the CMOS sensor of the digital camera methods you later have RAW processors guessing what color it was. Yeah, it works, but I just feel that to get the best color CCD scanners are still it.

    I bought an ED 5000 in the US and moved it to China in March. It rode in a checked bag and I think Delta gave it a rough ride because every roll that goes through is a new adventure. I converted the film feeder to full strips by jumping the circuit board and I also bought the 3D-printed film drums off Etsy (they required some cleanup and customization to work properly). I tore it down just like you did to clean the internals. I also added some new grease to some of the wear surfaces of the moving components. As far as scanning goes, sometimes I get a roll of 36 frames scanned perfectly, but more often I get about 15, 20, 25 frames scanned and the scanner randomly ejects the strip of film and I get salty with the machine. Another thing I just learned was set the "Focus" setting in Vuescan to "Always". Also, all of my scans show a creation date of 1/1/24. Not sure why. It's a great scanner when it behaves, I just wish it behaved more often. I guess it's showing it's age.

    I've got this exact model, purchased from a camera store new-in-the-box a few years after they were discontinued. I hadn't heard of the SA-30 mod. Clever!

    didnt know about the door, I have the V, looks like there will be more modding on it :D but as for nikon coolscan 4.0.3 will work on 7 or vista or 10 but driver signing needs to be off, that is not a problem for 7 I think but 10 will put a sign on screen

    I love my Coolscan 8000. It is very manual for loading though, even with my more format-optimized 3d printed holders. If I hadn't switched entirely to 120 and digital I would have to give the 5000 a serious look!
    I'm curious what that anti-static brush is. Seems like something I should add to my setup.

      I want to see automated wet mount of a 38 frame hand wound roll on an imacon, and the device needed to facilitate. I think it could warrant up to 3 ziploc baggies =D

    Once I had Nikon LS-50. It was SO slow, I almost never used it. Having a personal Noritsu scanner is sych a relief!

    I have a Coolscan 5000 and had the same issue with Digital ICE. I read that it is due to some kind of problem with CPU overclocking not playing nicely with the Nikon Scan software. There might be a better way, but I just ended up creating a custom power plan in Windows that set my maximum processor state to 80%. With that change I'm able to use Digital ICE without any errors while batch scanning with my SA-21 feeder.

    great video! i'm looking forward to the comparison to camera scanning. I hear you on the dust, for me camera scanning has alleviated nearly 100% of the dust i used to get on my flatbed (and much better quality for 120 film. 35mm is always tough, although i get great results camera scanning, curious to see your comparison

    Yeah, it's a great scanner. Colors are crap tho. Even when converting through NLP. I prefer the Kodak Pakon F135. I find that I don't need 20 MP scans and am happy with 6 MP. Somehow because of the way the Kodak machine handles the film, the photos have more detail than my Nikon 5000 ED,

    Very good video.
    As far as I know, the problem is not Nikon, but Digital ICE. Epson does not support Digital ICE anymore on Windows with Epson Scan 2, therefore they started providing Silverfast.
    And the old Epson Scan does not work, I think, on Windows 64 Bit.
    This is probably why scanning fails with ICE on.

    • @SprocketHoles
      @SprocketHoles  4 місяці тому

      My best guess is that it is some low level weird software bug causing an overflow or memory issue on newer systems.

    • @Shiunbird
      @Shiunbird 4 місяці тому

      @@SprocketHoles Yea... in any case, Epson explicitly mentions ICE not working on newer machines, so they released Epson Scan 2 without ICE.

    You could use VirtualBox to install a virtual windows XP or Windows 7 and then use Nikon scanner tool from there?

    • @salat
      @salat 4 місяці тому

      Or even VMWare Workstation - it's free for personal use now - no problem to assign the USB scanner to the VM with either software..

    I bought a G4 PowerBook just to run Nikon Scan with ICE. It is 100% worth it to find a solution to run Nikon Scan.
    I used vuescan for years and there is no comparison between real ICE versus the dust scratch removal in vuescan.

    Dirt on the mirror is an eternal problem with those Coolscans for the simple reason that the mirror faces upwards, albeit at 45 degrees. You might want to give your films a decent clean before sticking them inside the scanner or you'll be shoving more dirt on to the mirror.
    Minolta's 5400 scanners have the mirror mounted vertically - much less probs with dust.
