    You mentioned shopping bags. Does the supermarket not provide one and so you have to provide your own when you go shopping?

    • @Brfff
      @Brfff 3 місяці тому

      Similar to Australia, they have phased out (I assume) plastic/paper shopping bags at the checkout ... so you need to bring your own (if buying more than a few items). I don't remember seeing the Carina Express having some you could buy if you forgot (I could be wrong) - the Carrefour supermarkets certainly do have re-usable ones you can buy and, I think, make neat "souvenirs" that you can re-use back home as some have Tahitian themes and/or French on them. /Brett

      @Brfff 3 місяці тому

      Should clarify before some smartarse does ... "phased out FREE shopping bags" ... you can still get them in Australia and at the Carrefour in Tahiti, but you have to pay for them, hence the incentive to bring-your-own & re-use them.

      Thanks for taking the time to give some feedback, appreciate it. I am actually using a GoPro suction cup mount on my roof ... but, I've got the GoPro set to have a wider field of view to try to capture more of the sides. The downside is that it captures more of the sky than desirable. If I had it pointing any further down then it'd capture a lot of my bonnet bobbing in and out of view. I have thought about maybe mounting it on my bonnet - might give that a try on the local roads (worried the engine heat might make the suction fail ... ?). For those first time travellers coming from the airport this is a boring way to see and enter Melbourne for the first time. A more scenic route is to get off the Hume Freeway and get onto the Western Ring Road. Head west along that. It will take you into the city. Along the way you will view the cityscape. When closer you will cross the Westgate Bridge and have stunning views of the city skyscrapers, parks, the Yarra and Maribynong Rivers, the Docklands and the huge, beautiful Port Phillip Bay and beaches and distant mountain ranges.

    At worst, you could have pull over to the shoulder (having had plenty of warning) and called 131940, SE Queensland's traffic monitoring centre, to inform them of the conflicting information regarding the tunnel. If there there was an incident (*and you cannot see the exit of this tunnel from the entrance or the sign) and you came across it - like a vehicle on fire, or even emergency workers on the road rescuing someone from a vehicle entrapment and you hit one of them, you would have equally been liable. If everyone was going through a red traffic light because they are too stupid and impatient to do so, would you as well? I certainly wouldn't.

      @Jonesy1701 5 місяців тому

      @@user-no9js5sk5c I am not wrong. On the road, only Uniform Traffic Control Devices carry a legislative power to direct road users to do something. I.e., simply seeing the word "stop" written does not mean you must stop by law. If you saw a red octagonal sign with a white outline and white capital letters reading "STOP" then you must stop. The point I'm making is there are certain signs and lights used to direct drivers. Some are statutory, meaning it is an offence to disregard them. And some are only advisory. Where it it's merely a suggestion and it's up to the driver to decide. The orange led light board is advisory only. This tunnel is fitted with red traffic lights and a statutory sign that says "stop here on red signal." If the tunnel wanted you to stop, those lights would be red.

      Thanks, glad it was of some use to somebody ;). I've had this video as "unlisted" rather than "public" on my channel until the other day. One simple souvenir, not sure if I mentioned it, are the re-usable shopping bags - some nice Tahitian imagery, and something different to the ones here in Australia, and my son uses their "petit" one for his library books ... and Subway foot-long subs ;) /Brett

    Both versions were a bit wonky, the black box around the picture of the stabilized version looked a bit odd, but I think that I prefer it. Strange to hear that the Finnish buses slip and slide. Chains would fix that. And the "Thumbs up" button changes its color to black once pressed, but doesn't increment the "Good" vote count. "Thumbs down" works as expected. Edit: refreshing the page fixed the count.

      They just have winter tyres with studs I believe - never saw any chains on cars in Finland. I set the iMovie stabilisation at 33% ... I tried to cut the video to sections where the stabilisation was needed (i.e. cut out when I turned the camera around to myself), but that just resulted in a zoomed-in video. I wish I'd documented more of my life in Finland when I had the camera, but you had to deliberately carry the video camera around with you, rather than just having a phone you could capture things on. Oh well.

      @@BrfffTravels Colorado has "Chain Laws" where you have to use chains on the passes or go home. In the Springs (Colorado Springs), I never took the bus, but I can't imagine the city risking it with each passenger one accident away from a nice payday. :) Chains were such a PITA that you had to be pretty desperate before you would use them. You would freeze your tookus off putting them on, and then they would tend to beat the crap out of your car while you drove. In Black Forest, ~2300 meters, and with much more snow, you usually could do just fine with studded snow tires. Not sure if studded snow tires are still in use in Colorado - there was a lot of complaining about the damage that they did to the road. I never thought that it was all that bad. These days front wheel drive with intentionally low air pressure in your front tires will generally get you anywhere you need to go. But be sure to replace the fuse for the lighter with an automotive circuit breaker. I have the same regrets of not taking enough pictures.

      Sir, if it's in Australia then it's a "ute" and not a "pickup". And I'm embarrassed I didn't notice it ... I would've lingered on it longer. {insert rant about the Americans shutting down the Australian car manufacturing industry and our superior utes} ;) www.ridgebackbodies.com.au/did-australia-invent-the-ute/

      @@BrfffTravels Actually I knew that, but it looked like it was imported from the US. But then again, it's hard to tell from this angle. From the ass-end, everything looks like a 1940 Chevy pickup. :) But I worked with a guy who had the Holden version of what we called the Pontiac G8. He loved it. I think that his was badged as a Holden. And as somebody who worked for GM, I blame Rick Wagoner. He was as useless as tits on a boar hog.

    • @BrfffTravels
      @BrfffTravels 7 місяців тому

      To be honest, I think you are correct - it looks more like a US "pickup" than an Aussie "ute" from that era ... ours were smooth from the tray to the cab (I think ... ?!), whereas the cab & tray in that one are separate ... ?? I'm proud to say that the Pontic G8 is actually an Aussie-built Holden imported to the US! It was actually partially the fault of an earlier government ... they pretty much dared the companies to leave (no more subsidies), so they said "fine, we'll leave then" ...

      Actually, not sure about the fishing! For the actual duration, it depends also on time between the photos ... maybe 5s per frame ... so 1s of timelapse might be 2min of real time ... so maybe 1½hr in total ... at the start my wife & kids start walking off to the end, so that'd probably be the max. time I was allowed ;)

      Actually, I've got footage of my student exchange to Shizuoka 静岡 back in 1989/1990 ... including when we met the mayor. We weren't expecting there to be TV cameras so got a little shocked on entering the room ... where I proceeded to introduce myself ... ぼくのブレットです ... "This is my Brett" ... cringe. Obviously I meant to say ... ぼくの名前はブレットです ... "My name is Brett" ... but had a totally brain freeze. I don't really take myself seriously so I might clip that one day so we can all have a good laugh at my cringey stuff-up. During the same trip we were asked to sing some songs ... unfortunately we were given Austrian songs, rather than Australian ... good times!
