- Another very short video - sorry. My high-school friend Gofto (living in Switzerland at the time) visited me in Helsinki, and we also popped over to post-Soviet/pre-EU Estonia for the day. I believe it was around -22ºC.
There is some footage around Helsinki (Ruoholahti & the park near Iso Roba), some footage on the Soviet-era/Polish-built ferry MS Georg Ots, and some footage around the Tallinn old town. Not much, in hindsight, and I wish I'd taken more.
I was maybe more interested in the different ... and pointless ... effects on my new video camera ... sepia and the slow-shutter effect. 🥴
I always enjoyed visiting Estonia (12 times in three years according to my passport).
One minor thing that I think is mildly interesting ... I remember seeing a Soviet Intourist brochure advertising cruising around the Baltics on the Georg Ots (or Георг Отс) ... when I was still a youngster in Australia during the 80s ... 15-odd-years later, I was actually sailing on her many times. I also remember reading a Cold War era spy novel that involved Helsinki and a rather forebiding description of Soviet-era Tallinn ... wish I could remember the name ... ?
Originally recorded on MiniDV using a Sony DCR-PC100E.
Kiitos. Thank you from Viiburg (Russia)
We would ge that "rotten" ice on the creek where we learned how to skate. You would fall through to the solid ice about a 1/2" below the rotten stuff. Made skating a chore. Estonia is lovely. :)
I visited Estonia about a dozen times and Latvia once. Unfortunately never made it as far as Lithuania. But, highly recommended ... always enjoyed visiting there. /Brett
Estonia has developed a lot since then.
Oh yes, I imagine it has! Hopefully this is a little snapshot of how it was ... if I remember it was 25 Krooni for a pint of beer. Always enjoyed visiting Tallinn. /Brett
