Me
hi what is conclusion ? you recommend CSG pads ?
It’s a good overall street and track capable pad that last a long time. I just liked and wanted a more aggressive pad for the track.
@ thx what pads & disks you recommend for mainly track use ? I now use zimmerman disks & ferodo 2500 in the front + oem in the rear but after 12h on track need to replace
@ I’m using AP racing BBK with Ferodo DS1.11, it’s super aggressive but it’s a track car now with a turbo
I have my 1st gen BRZ tuned to run E85 with the Open Flash tablet. How much better is it to tune my car with Ecutek?
I flash my car with the phone app
@@phelpsgarage4202 So Ecutek is way better?
@ I enjoy it, but it’s up to your tuner. Whatever your tuner likes to tune with is what I would use
@ Oh okay. Thanks for the reply.
@ you bet!
That Ryobi cutoff wheel is the same thing I used on mine. Made it 10x easier. I’m also in Florida.
Hell yeah 👍🏻
Man it looks so ghetto with that gold tape 😂
Yeah, I can’t say I’m the biggest fan but it’s more for performance not for looks
Great video, I have 07 C6 Z06 all stock, love every thing about it. Always a thrill on side roads.
Best track car for the money!
Must be nice having all these bolt on parts available I had the weld up and fabricate everything myself, roll cage, spider gears, coilovers, strut bars fuel cell can, baffles for oil pan but what I can't get over is using this RTV. There's got to be a better way.
That’s cool you learned how to do all those things. Yes I wish we had a better solution with the RTV
We are all imperfect drivers and I appreciate the fact that you’re not only tracking the car but also sharing your experiences. And the video quality is pretty great, I tried getting on track footage from a driving trip this summer and it’s mediocre.
Thank you! Do you own a GR/BRZ?
The stock seats on the GR86 are so comfortable, much better than the Recaros imo. Just saving 5 lbs on the seat is an L for me tbh. The lightweight batteries are a W though.
It kills me to know I only saved 5lbs per seat.. but I need a good seat for the track
Hey. Thanks for documenting all of this. I have a 2023 GR86 that I bought for my son. (He immediately proved that he would drive it the way I would have driven it when I was 16 so now it is my GR86 HA!) So it sits around at my office and I keep thinking "I am gonna track that thing!" So...I live in Dahlonega, Ga and I just joined AMP (Atlanta Motorsports Park) So now I am gonna track this thing next year! I saw you have been to Road Atlanta recently. If you ever get to AMP maybe I'll see you there. Looks like you are having a blast man. Keep living the dream.
I haven’t been to AMP but plan too! Dahlonega has some good mountains road!! Thanks for watching!
Very nice videos I first caught your first one on brakes fluid change and then I seen the others at sebring, takes me back a few years since I was road racing at Moroso, Sebring, Daytona and once at Roebling Road. I had a Datsun 280 and boy that took😂 some work to get competitive, just imagine having drum brakes in the back, I was bleeding them after every session. I just picked up a base gr86 with performance package and have a hpde at Sebring coming up in January. ❤ The boxer flat 4 really got my attention. It seems to pull real nice throughout the RPM range and being limited to Street driving I still have yet to experience what it can do in the turns.
Make sure you do pads and fluid before going. I would change your oil to 5w-30 with a slight over fill and you should be fine. Good luck!!
Bad ass! Cant wait to see if you can replace that 6th gear or something. Would love to see how you battle against the "better" cars.
Thank you! A shorter 6th gear would be best
Does it work on the street too?
Yeah, it’s going to add some more NVH
This is embarrassing for you and whatever "instructor" is in the car with you. Your whole mindest of an hpde is completely wrong. Please retitle this video "WHAT NOT TO DO AT AN HPDE". If you are scared to point by in ANY turn humble yourself and move down a group. Dont take this the wrong way but you are a novice driver at Road Atlanta. You were a train conductor for every session you were in.
I appreciate your opinion. Thanks for watching.
@phelpsgarage4202 I do think you make great content. Best part about going to the track is learning to get faster. You will get faster. Just hard when fast guys are out there
@@MikeCB750 yeah 100%. And I appreciate that. My goal isn’t to slow or piss people off on track and yes, some people may be in my mirror for a short time, but if I have to lift for them in the past and then I catch back up to them it kind of defeats the purpose. There’s times i’ve gotten plenty of point by with a faster car, but I don’t take it so I can learn a different line through certain turns. There was a ton going on on this day due with the weather the new track with it’s new set up and at the end of the day I don’t wanna make people uncomfortable and try to make a pass in areas that will make them uncomfortable just because I gave the point by. In the future once I know the track better and the car things would get better and on top of that I could use my blinker with Chin, which I never done before, but will in the future.
That’s awesome man… you’re making me want to turbocharged minee 😂 …. When you do another video would love to know what you did with the delay throttle response i been getting that on mine and im stock which is weird lol i hate not having full control on how much throttle I give i dont know if it happens to you
It’s tuned like that for now but we will fix it going forward
Hi, do you have time 0-100 km/h time data?
No, not at the moment
Big thank you to documenting your build. I also want to turbo my car but plan on doing a built block for (hopefully) some extra reliability for the track. Lots of humility too with the comments criticizing track etiquette. At the end of the day it's your car and it's nice you are treating it as such and being mindful of not pushing the absolute limits without being sure.
Yeah, it’s easy to criticize people online but if they knew my mind and what my goal were it’s not to be that guy and ruin everyone’s day. You can tell there were plenty of times I would point by but once the car is up the temp and the tires are up the temp and it feels good, I will push the car a little harder and harder, but this track day was mainly to get data with the new set up. If you were to turbocharge the car try to just keep it on E85 and run I would say under 10 psi is what I recommend. Thanks for watching
What run group were you in? Seems like advanced and you aren’t behaving like it.What horrendous track etiquette you’ve got. Won’t give point by’s. See’s fast car incoming *tries to gun it*. Lift and let them go. Learn to go side by side with people. Can understand you don’t want to give a point by by the esses but jesus. You could’ve given it after T5. Don’t remember where i stopped watching. But i definitely do not want to see any more of it
Thanks for your input, I’ll definitely work on that
Pro5000r with anti rattle clips are simply the best brakes system in the world I put mx72+ on them and there rock solid on track no fade no heating issue what so ever.
When my car was at stock power it was way too much breaking! Now with the turbo it’s just right, but yes, I would say hands-down. These are the best brakes out there.
Hello! Does the Vertex steering wheel have smaller diameter compared to the oem one?
Not that I know of.. it feels a lot better than the stock one
Interesting video. I’ll have to see what my 6th is doing. 😂 I don’t go that fast normally so I have no idea.
😂 let me know
11:00
This video makes me want to turbo my gr86 so bad 😩
It’s a lot of fun!!
Wait why couldn’t you keep accelerating in 6th gear?
Due to it being an overdrive, it’s too much load on the stock motor. Just keeping things safe as we test
@ Ahhh got cha. That is a lot of load. Hopefully he can taper off the boost and ignition timing to still be able to accelerate normally in 6th. Although probably not too many trucks out there where you can get deep into 6th gear ?
@ hopefully not, but Rd. Atlanta is now my home track and I can’t even floor it the whole way 🫠 hopefully 150 mph is enough with the new gear
Great that the car is running so well after all of your hard work. Sorry, I didn't understood the reason for lifting in 6th gear, I am sure your car now boosted can pull on the gear too, why do you think it may hurt the engine or trans?
Too much load on the stock motor now that it’s boosted
What org and run group was this?
Chin, blue group
You giving point bye’s while your at WOT. Poor track etiquette at best
With all due respect, do I need to lift for your 700 hp GT500 too?? If that’s the case every time I do a point but I might as well just coast everywhere. When I do see people in my mirror, I know they’re faster. I wait for a more efficient safer way for them to pass, which is mainly on the straight. This was my first time at this track with the new set up and I was shaking down the car and getting some data. If you watch the whole video, you do see me pointed by a bunch of cars. I assure you it’s not my goal to over slow everyone and be a dick on track. Thanks for your feedback and watching
if you already know that you dont have enough gearing for the back straight, why do you always drag race people down it? At the 16 minute mark look at the train behind you. Then there are 2 porsches and a C8 behind you going into the back straight. If you let off and give the point by early in the straight all 3 cars will out of your sights by the end of the straight - they will not be slowing you down. Instead, you block the 2nd porsche and the C8 when you eventually go into 6th. You then again drag race the gt4 on the front straight after giving the point. Cool car, love the big and functional wing. I drove a gr86 up in the PNW as a rental and I had tons of fun. I'm sure a boosted one is amazing to drive!
Appreciate the feedback and it wasn’t my goal too slow or to annoy any drivers on track. I’m sure in the video you can see me pointing by a ton of people as I warm up down the back straight and through certain sections. Lot of times I wait for a better spot to point by so it’s not so sketchy trying to pass people through the corners. This was my first time at the track and temperature is not ideal for the tires. And yes, when I can, I will give it 100% on the exit knowing eventually they will pass down the straight and as far as running out of gear, I knew it would happen I just didn’t know when it would happen. Now that I got some experience with this track and with the new gearing, that should change somethings. Thanks for watching
I agree
@@phelpsgarage4202 Tbh if there's someone in your mirrors to where you comment on it then you've already missed a point by. If you're uncomfortable letting them pass in the corners on the outside or the inside then you need more time in slower groups.
I exchanged responses with you in the past regarding a C6 Z06. You are an educated and respecful person. I watched this video (I watch most of your videos) in the past because not only I own a GR86(my second one) but I also participate on Time-attacks monthly as well as private sessions. My feedback to you after watching your videos is that I was noticing that you weren't going at your full capacity. I watched most of the video but maybe I missed some comments but at the end I was right, you said that you weren't going full out. When I was watching the races I kept telling my wife and son: " He is not at his max perfomance". I figure that you weren't experienced at that particular track. It sucks what happened on the straight when you shifted to 6th gear. I can't blame you but it is so obvious that the car can't meet the power/torque curve to keep fighting the air resistance/friction at 128-129mph in 6th gear, it seems like the turbo combination(mostlikely the hot side) combined with the gearing is hurting you. This is probably something that you haven't experience on the other track in Florida. I have been on various track on various cars where I also couldn't use the next gear and I had to stick to red line on the current gear instead of shifting. I think that you should try a smaller hot side, maybe a .84 or even a .63 and see how that works. You can't blame yourself on this one, literally you are one of the very few in the entire country with a turbokit and tracking the car so you are at error and trial. I was gauging your speed/performance by watching the cars behind on your rear view mirror. You had a ton of cars passing you but again, you weren't at your max and you were letting it off a lot. This brings me to a topic that I really want to share. I know you put a ton of aftermarket components on your car (I have some built cars like that currently). What I want to say is that there is a point where you can spent so much on a GR 86 and you could surpass a budget of a true sports car (C8, M2, 718, Supra ). You got to the point where you are at the limit. You already have top tier brakes, a turbokit, great fortune 510 suspension and a lot more. I think that there is a margin for more power but right now there is that technical issue with the rpms and the turbo not picking up. I would say this though, you left off the gas most of the time on that long straight and there was a couple of times where you actually hit the gas and it seems as if the car was going to keep going and pick up more boost and speed in 6th gear. Your other option is the final drive. The dude on youtube Thetopher did that on his n/A GR86 and the car was silly peppy, I think he went with a 4.88 from a first gen GT86. You can always try a smaller turbo as well.
This was the longest response I’ve had so thank you. There was so much going on this day. This was a completely new track with a ton of elevation. The temps were between 30 and 50°, which is an ideal for the Hoosiers. The car has a new set up which I’m watching Boost pressure, oil pressure, oil temp, and coolant temps all while trying to learn a new track. My goal is not to hold people back but at the same time I try to wait for a more efficient safer place for them to pass. Drag racing down the straightaway I knew I was gonna run out of gear as soon as I put it into fifth but I still like to exit and drive close to the limit as I get used to things or when the tires come up the temp. By all means I wasn’t driving all out. I did have two people riding with me and I still don’t push the car due to that. Turbo hot side wouldn’t matter because it would just spool up even faster. My issue is that this is a stock motor and pulling and six gear which is an overdrive is too much load for it. So my goal is to run a 3.73 with a slightly taller tire which should push me to about 150 miles an hour. I knew that I would run out of gear. I just didn’t know exactly when or how. Now that I got some time at this track I can set the car up different and Just cruise and let everyone pass me by not delaying anyone behind me and push it through the rest of the track. And yes, there comes a point to where I’m gonna stop modifying the car. I believe I’m getting close to that point as now I just want to enjoy it. Rd Atlanta is a big boy track due to the speed you can hit. Once I max out this car‘s potential, I will jump into a new platform. This has still been the cheapest way to modify over a supra or C8 Corvette. Thanks for watching
You need to go down to a lower run group. Your track awareness is severely lacking. You ruined so many people's sessions by not pointing people by and causing a massive train behind you. Please drop the ego and excuses and point people by next time; there's a reason so many people are commenting the same thing.
Thanks for watching I appreciate your input. Seems I have missed the target on track. I’ll definitely keep that in mind. Maybe once you boost yours I can follow
@phelpsgarage4202 It's no worries at all man. It happens and all we can do is move forward. The track looked super crowded that day, so I'm sure it wasn't easy. It's hard finding a balance in these cars because of how frustrating it is to point by someone who seems fast to only be slowed down by them as soon as you hit the twisties. It's just good practice to point someone by once you see them in your mirror because the only reason they're there is because they're faster than you over the course of a full lap. There's no shame at all in dropping down a group for a few sessions until you get used to the track and the mods more. I frequent VIR, so it would be a blast to run with you. I'm currently debating if I want to drop all that money into my GR86 though, or if I'd rather just transition to a Supra or C8.
@ yeah I know what it’s like to be behind people that really take the joy out of us especially when we’re trying to run a flyer. This was my first time at the track in 30 to 50° temps with a completely new set up. My thoughts were all over the place. I would enjoy a Supra or even a C6Z but to me those are the easy way out. I do enjoy being there underdog and now that the car is turbocharge you can hang with some of the best... even with 4ish psi. I know once I get comfortable and know this track better I’ll be pretty damn fast and won’t have to worry about faster cars as much. The car will make more power and downforce soon with a taller rear gear. I would like to be mid 1:30 at road Atlanta by next year with more seat time.
@phelpsgarage4202 Being the underdog is really fun. I totally get that. It really just depends on what you want. I'm not really sure how much of an underdog you can be considered once you add more boost though. That puts you in a very similar power-to-weight ratio as a Supra. I personally would rather spend $55-65k on a used Supra or C8 that has more to give than spending $55k to max out a GR86. I would also much rather be able to run 93 on track to have that performance instead of being forced to haul in my own E85.
@ yeah that makes sense. Sometimes I think if I’ve gone too far with this car, but at the same time, it’s way cheaper to maintain and modify this car versus most. My car is on flex fuel, but I always run E85. I don’t know how comfortable I would be running 93 with a turbocharged GR specially on track. Eventually there’s gonna be a stopping point with this car and I’ll end up jumping into another platform. When? I have no idea 🤷🏻♂️ but until then I’ll keep on having fun!
Sounds like a 3.73 diff would help you
Big time!
Well done and great driving.
Thank you! She’s gonna get fast once we get some more seat time 😎
I know you think your not causing a problem, but dont ruin other peoples day by not giving a point bye. So it ruins a couple corners for you, it ruins entire laps for other people.
and dont give a point bye only to go full throttle the whole time. Let them pass!
Agreed. He would've been instantly kicked out of the "Experienced" group at both tracks I frequent. Extremely poor etiquette.
Yeah there's a serious misunderstanding by the driver of what the point of a point by is. Pointing someone by after already impeding their lap is already too late. This was the first Chin event I ran but there were far too many of these types of point bys making it only possible to get 2 clean laps the whole weekend.
If he’s on your bumper for a whole lap, he’s faster, let him go. Feel bad for the STi driver. Also course workers with blue flags would be helpful.
See if CS garage can add the auto blip feature so you wont have to worry about hill-toe on track
Yeah, we’re working on that now
Easy method for point by's. If you look in the mirror and cars are following you, point them by. You spent too much time with trains of cars following you.
Yeah, I agree. My main issue was down the back straight and I hate pointing people by in the brake zones going into the corners.
@@phelpsgarage4202but chin blue group has no point by restrictions so that means you should be confidant in pointing people by anywhere not just straights. I understand everything you are saying being a new set up new track etc but right on chins website looking at run groups you should have been in green.
Im not understanding the 6th gear thing. Is it that you don’t want to floor it in 6th or is it that even when you do the car doesn’t move? If it is that you dont want to floor it in 6th, why is that?
It’s too much of an overdrive and it puts a ton of load on the stock motor with boost
Drag racing between turns, holding up everyone in the turns, no heel toe, if I was your instructor I would put you in a slower run group. You are definitely pissing off everyone behind you.
One reason why I let everyone pass me before getting to T10. Heel toe down shifting couldn’t happen due to the delay with the tune. I do agree it is annoying slowing people down.. not my intention
@@phelpsgarage4202 Then let us bye!! If you give a point bye, slow down! We might have power to pass you on the straights, but you hold us up in the corners.
@ trust me I point plenty of people by. My issue was heading into turn 10 and I admit I will slow people down.. but I think we both could admit that turn 10A and 10B is probably not the best place to pass somebody especially coming off of a straightaway and again heading into another one. I try to make it safe for everyone to pass, even if it’s in the corners, but turn 10 is not an ideal spot. Once I get more comfortable with the track and the car with this new set up, it’s gonna be hard for most people to pass me in the corners. There’s just not enough real estate to make it safe and enjoyable. This was just an HPDE.
Hey! So curiosity is gonna probably eat away at me and im gonna get ribbed for asking, but why not put on a throttle controller to combat the laggy throttle response? These cars suffer from laggy throttle cuz of the way toyota and subaru modulated their throttle. Could get a throttle control to make it more aggressive and tune the throttle response to your liking. Just food for thought i guess. Im thinking ab getting the blitz one even tho im NA
The factory throttle is tuned pretty aggressive up top so the tuner delay it for me. I had him send me a different map that makes it more responsive.
@phelpsgarage4202 man, i wish i wish i could say the same. Sometimes I'd blip the throttle, and I'd have little bit of a laggy response. This is when im driving less aggressive, but still. I want a more responsive throttle.
I don’t see the appeal in Porsche’s or rear engine type cars., but anyway that GR86 is performing good out there.
All things considered yeah it was running really good. I can’t wait to turn it up some more.
Yeah man in 6 th gear your car just stops pulling that sucks. But hey it’s all good man that’s how your learn and make adjustments for the next event. Great video
Thank you!
Hard work paying off. Happy to see things going well. Your cautious & incremental approach is 10/10. Best build series out there.
Thank you!! Time to turn it up
Alright. So you're stressed about the trans. Gonna see some reinforcement then?
If the transmission blows up, I would like to put a better gear set in it. Probably a PPG gear set
@@phelpsgarage4202 PPG gearset?? Zach at ZF Design did not know of anything as far as a close ratio gearset, especially when it comes to a shorter sixth gear. For my STI's I've been able to get a JDM fifth and sixth gear combo that makes them close ratio like a Group N tranny. What do you know?
Looks like you had a positive event at Road Atlanta in many ways.
Yeah, things went well and now we’re gonna continue to push it a little bit more.
When you say "I ran out of gear" do you mean that sixth gear doesn't function to accelerate the car anymore? If so, could you increase the 6th gear ratio to make it function?
It’s too much of an overdrive to be boosting a stock motor and it puts so much load on it so it’s probably not too safe to do so
Question on suspension… I ordered the Fortune 500 based on your car but went with 8k/9k springs. What is your track setting for the struts? Just looking for a starting point.
It’s gonna be hard to say because I have aero on my car and at my height the way I have it balanced from front to back without rubbing. I set it so long ago I truly couldn’t tell you where I’m at, but I feel I’m on the lower side before you get to the middle section with clicks. I hope this helps
Awesome, thanks for helping the community out on this. Hope to see you on the track one day!
Who were you running with (which organization)?
Chin track days
Great group, I run with them up north, PitRace. The happy hour is great for correcting stuff.
When Phelps states ( I will never hang with the Porsches) that is him being humble. I can tell you that with 3.73 in the diff and being able to pull 6th with a al little more boost. I will hang with most cars. Including most Porches. The areo is awsome.
😅
That was good fun👍 thx Rob.
It was a blast. I can’t wait to turn it up.
Good luck gettin all that installed before sebring super awesome vid glad to see the 86 on track again. Do you worry about 6th gear purely because it has a higher than 1-1 ratio or are stock transmissions for the 86 just known to be bad?
Yeah it higher than 1:1 and it’s a lot of load on the stock motor. I’ve seen the stock trans break at stock power levels
@@phelpsgarage4202HKS said the trans was good for about 400 hp, but I’ll probably boost my 86 between the ‘25-‘26 season, might build the trans too or just wait for it to brake. My buddy with K20 Miata just keeps trans on hand as they are only $400 and can be changed in couple hours.
@ I hope it can hold 400 whp. I want to do a PPG gear set with a shorter 6th gear if the trans gives up
So much valuable information 👌
Thank you!
