What is ALC? Where should I set it? And why...
The ALC limits the output power, protecting your rig from over-power and over-heating, especially in the Final Amplifier circuit. It does this by applying a bias voltage to the input signal, essentially clamping down on your signal as it is increased.
As you increase the input signal, the more ALC voltage, as displayed on your ALC meter, will be applied.
The trick is to find the balance between having enough input signal power to drive your system to your desired output power, and having so much input that your ALC limiting voltage begins to affect the quality of the output signal, and I’ll show you where that is in the demo.

    Hi Tom. Thanks for all your FT-891 videos and tips. I recently purchased one about a month ago. Your tips and explanations of the menus have been a big help getting familiar with it. I do have a question, until just a few days ago i was able to get audio out of the top mounted speaker or an external speaker plugged into the back. When necessary if I plugged my headphones into the side I got audio fine. Now I can only hear audio when plugged into the side jack. I have the switch on the back of the head set to phone. I am thinking that it must be some menu function that I changed. Any information or suggestions would be apptreciated.

      @ND3N Hi Tom, I called Yaesu and did a full reset. The decision by both the Yeasu tech, Roger, and myself is that the headphone jack is faulty. Thank goodness since I just purchased it on 7/27, DXengineering replaced it. After a 25-minute drive to their store, I was on the road with the replacement. My XYL sometimes wishes we lived further away 😁. I may have been the only ham to have experienced this issue. Thanks again for the informative videos.

    Still not sure what the Yaesu's ALC is. Is it just a level control that keeps the TX output stages from being overdriven? Also, if the input level is beyond the linear dynamic range of the ALC why the meter reading doesn't indicate that fact is strange in my opinion. Also, I would find it reasonable for anyone using the ALC meter to assume that the highlighted bar section is the normal (acceptable) range of the ALC and nothing to worry about if the indicator doesn't go above that point. I also find a meter that has no calibration marks or suggested input setpoints strange indeed. Here is where I start to go astray, I'm fed up with the Yaesu FT-710 and all its cryptic nomenclature. It is obvious that much of the explanations of what things like ALC do, how to set... etc. is from UA-cam content providers that have discovered most of what they know by (hard fought) experimentation (not a criticism) because it has become painfully obvious to me that they like the rest of us out here in UA-cam land sure as hell didn't get what they know from the most abbreviated radio manual I have ever had the misfortune to use (please don't tell me this manual is just like all the other radio manuals, I didn't buy them but I did buy FT-710 and expect and deserve more). Anyway, enough of this rant, I'm tired of trying to figure out what all the cryptic settings mean and how to use them. I could spend a lifetime researching the info needed to correctly use the FT-710. (PS - by vocation and education I'm an Electrical Engineer and have been a HAM (continuously) for over 66 years, I mention my background only to let you know this "isn't my first rodeo" and strongly suggest that Yaesu needs to get their act (AKA #!@%) together.) Thanks, for your invaluable help Mr. ND3N DE KK6Z 73.

      Great comment. I do use the OM for a reference, but have the same frustrations you do. Just would like to know what to obtain - I do not even have that USB cable at hand as of now. And I hope the configuration on Linux is more or less the same, except for the details regarding the /dev/tty... stuff. 73 de DO1HNR, Henner

      Yes, that simple cable is all you need. Not sure what stores you have in Germany, but any store selling computers or similar electronics will have them. They are commonly called printer cables. You can also pick them up on Amazon. You can work RTTY using this cable without a lot of workaround. 73

      @@ND3N Ok, thank you for the quick answer. Good to know that the USB cable is the only one required. 🙂 I am familiar with these ones as I have been working in IT all my life and will have no problem to get one, whereas the these other connectors like the RTTY/DATA on the rear of my transceiver still look "weird" to me for now. 😐 Good to know they are "out for scope" for the time being.😉

    New Ham here, just unboxed the FT 891 and FC -50 and very much appreciate these videos. Thank you for breaking it all down and not assuming we know anything. Love how you pointed out and explained what each button, connection was for!

      Adjust your RF gain You can also go into the menu settings and adjust the signal output for receive.

    I have done everything I know how to get the receiving number above 4.2. My range is 2.8 to 4.2. I do have the volume turned up in the Volume Mixer. The signals in the graph are fuzzy not solid. My graph looks different than yours. I have Moni off. My MIC Gain is 60. Any advice. Thank you, jack KJ5EJV

    What do I need to do to get the Receiving on the lower left to get up to 60? I am only getting up to 40. Thank you. KJ5EJV

    • @ND3N
      @ND3N 20 днів тому

      To start, 40 is is good enough for FT8, but try adjusting your RF gain up and down to see how that affects your receive. I like to keep my sensitivity to around 50 ish. And the higher that goes, the more noise you’ll receive. Too low and you’ll start to limit the good signals, and too high you’ll drown them out with the bad signals… QRM/QRN…

      @@ND3N I have done everything I know how to get the receiving number above 4.2. My range is 2.8 to 4.2. I do have a question. When I click on the speaker on the lower right and open the Volume Mixer I have System Sounds full volume, JTAlert CallSigns #1 Full Volume, but WSJT-X is greyed out. Sometimes it shows a volume but it goes away. The signals in the graph are fuzzy not solid. My graph looks different than yours. I have Moni off. My MIC Gain is 60. Any advice. Thank you

      I used to do FT-8 with my Yaesu FT-840 with siglink. All I had to do was turn my volume up to get the Receiving number up.
