I love America but the best nation in the world? You know whos not trying to come to America? The Dutch. The Swedes. The Swiss. If youve ever been to those countries you realize what the land of the free really looks like. I remember my first time in The Netherlands in 2003 when weed was still illegal back here in Pittsburgh and my friend's were still risking arrest just to buy an 1/8. Here was a country where it wasnt just okay to get high - they had already normalized it. Sex workers were government emoloyees with health care and regular std screenings. This felt free. Kids were in the city alone on their bikes without worry. There were no guns and the steets of Amsterdam, with more bikes than people, felt safe at all hours of the night. I never wanted to come home. Its been 20 years and my city finally has bike lanes and encouraged bikes. Medically speaking, weed is legal. But sex workers can still not only get arrested but they if they have condoms on them to protect themselves, it can be an added charge as having paraphernalia. Four innocence people in my neighborhood of the Northside were shot and killed outside a grocery store by a drive by shooting - someone felt disrespectful at the gas station 50 ft away.
