Hidden Civil Rights History: What About The Women?
Welcome to Hidden Civil Rights History, which explores often overlooked civil rights history in the Washington, D.C. region. My name is Gregg Ivers, and I am a Professor of Government at American University.
Cassie Rodrique is a May 2024 honors graduate of American University, where she majored in political science with an emphasis on public policy and sustainability. The video featured here, "What About the Women?" was her class project for a course I teach each spring, Jazz and the Civil Rights Movement. Her work offers a deep exploration into the question of why women, outside of vocalists, have been overlooked when discussing the history and development of jazz.
