  • Welcome to Hidden Civil Rights History, which explores overlooked civil rights history in the Washington, D.C. region. My name is Gregg Ivers, and I am a Professor of Government at American University.
During the summer of 1960, Howard University students led pickets and protests against the Glen Echo Amusement Park, located just a few miles north of the D.C.-line. The park was located in a predominantly white neighborhood. But unlike many such protests against whites-only public accommodations during this time, the neighborhood encouraged and supported the student activists. Included is a 2019 interview I conducted with Dion Diamond, who was a Howard University student and among the leaders of the campaign to desegregate Glen Echo Amusement Park.
