  • Welcome to Hidden Civil Rights History, which explores often overlooked civil rights history in the Washington, D.C. region. My name is Gregg Ivers, and I am a Professor of Government at American University.
Washington, D.C. native Duke Ellington is one of the most important figures in the history of American music. His musical life has been celebrated and documented more than any other musician in American history. But Ellington had a more important voice in Black freedom struggle than is commonly known. His music both celebrated Black American life and called attention to the sorrows and pain of that experience. Learn more about his civil rights legacy here.
