    Recent subscriber here, I enjoy watching your progress, thanks for the content! I'm at a similar stage, in my mid-50's, been playing since 2022, trying to get my rating up to 900. This is the first video I've watched in your 900 series. Some minor suggestions, take 'em or leave 'em ... - explain how you know what score rates 900 (was it from looking at tournament results on that course?) - give a little more hole breakdown, including notes on lefty lines (I'm not a lefty, just curious how it changes things) - say a bit more about your scoring strategy for each hole, and course management tips generally - mention disc flight numbers (or at least speed) before throwing - I'm unfamiliar with the discs you throw, so the names don't mean much to me - another player would add interest, they could also be chasing 900 or maybe they have a different goal; this would slow things down so probably tighten up the editing if you do this, and keep aiming for 15 minutes or so per 9 holes Speaking of course management, seems like you should probably lay up more often. Hole 8 you got lucky that the miss didn't roll away (like player B did), and on the back 9 you took a couple unnecessary bogeys on run attempts or missed approach shots. I think about playing the odds - are my chances of hitting the putt higher than my chances of 3-putting? If so then run it, if not then lay up. Keep spinning!

    Interesting watching this from a lefty since I throw so many forehands here as a righty, front 9 especially. I’m amazed at how little wind you have in this round…not sure I’ve ever seen it this calm 😂

      It was an uncharacteristically nice day out. 😀 I'm not sure that I contend with wind a lot here. Although I don't play this one as much as the other courses around me. Wind can get annoying at times on 8 and 9.

    Something you could try would be to have an intro where you show snippets of some of the best flights you got during the round and highlights (and maybe funny lowlights) kinda like how Broderic does before his videos start. I always appreciate it, gets me excited to see how the round unfolds. Just spitballing. I watch for your growth as a player and your personality and insights on learning the game, not for how exciting or wacky your vids are.

    I can't really offer and feedback as to why these videos don't do as well as others, when they are generally my favorite style. just saw this after watching Josh "new brace form" ... In my ears Josh says stop the hips, do not let them rotate. That makes no sense to me.... In some videos you can translate what Josh means, can you do that again. Btw you've come a long way since you started, well done Bunky

    • @discsmd
      @discsmd 20 днів тому

      Yeah, I love Josh's new video, and I agree with him. I need to do a video of stopping my back leg from collapsing, which is a lesson I had with Josh last month. I used to let my back leg slam into my front leg (still do to some extent), but in doing that, I am bleeding power that I could transfer to the disc. Stopping that back half from collapsing, essentially stopping rotation allows you to transfer more energy into your hand. See Owen's most recent video on TrebuchetDG. Once I test out what allows me to stop the kinematic chain most efficiently, I'll do some videos on it.

    • @mortenhalkjrjacobsen3621

      @@discsmd I mean you clearly clears the front hip to give room for the disc to pass through, It sounds to me as if you don't want the hips to rotate, the just have to stay in place and that makes no sense to me. However I think he doesn't mean that, he has been teaching to clear the hips. Hope you can translate Josh

    • @discsmd
      @discsmd 17 днів тому

      @mortenhalkjrjacobsen3621 The hip does clear. But the hip clearing and you FORCING the hip to clear are different things. Just like, the throw is absolutely rotational, but I think we are finding that forcing rotation is not what you want. Hope that makes sense. I'll talk to Josh and see if he can clarify more.

    Good vid, def need more people discussing putting mechanics since the throw overshadows so much on YT. I have lots of thoughts, hope you don't mind and would be curious to hear your thoughts! I'm glad you mentioned the first spin source and how spin can be produced without wrist curl there, a lot of people misunderstand this. It's effectively internal shoulder rotation on the backswing mostly that is changing that hand position. I think it can actually be a huge source of spin, perhaps the most depending on how you look at it. The disc never gets pocketed behind the forearm or elbow without internal shoulder rotation. If you start in a shake hands position with the basket, and then curl your wrist, the putter won't get behind the forearm. In the shake hands position the elbow crease is angled somewhat upwards (externally rotated shoulder), if you bend your elbow from there without moving anything else, your hand is lifted up above your elbow. The internal rotation + elbow bend is the biggest factor, imo, to coil the disc behind the forearm / elbow and then wrist adds a lot of coil as well. If you look at the stamp and start with a somewhat bent elbow and elbow by your side, then go into max internal rotation without wrist curl, I can get the disc to rotate up to 180 deg from that motion. Wrist curl can then add 90 more deg of rotation. Fingers extension / flexion is a very small amount of rotation, but, since everything culminates into the fingers as the final lever, from that POV, it makes sense to rate them as the most important. But if you try to do a stab putt style that is only elbow extension + finger pop with no wrist curl and no shoulder rotation, you can barley get any spin on the disc with just the fingers unless you slightly cheat and give yourself a little bit of wrist curl and/or shoulder rotation. When people like Gannon say, "lead with the elbow" for putting power, I think they are indirectly (knowingly or unknowingly) saying to use more internal shoulder rotation since that is how the elbow gets flared out and forward and allows the disc to be more pocketed behind the arm / lags behind and allows more whip and effortless power. I agree that training finger pop is important and good advice, but I think the most important part isn't trying to force extra spin onto the disc (even though thinking this may help with the training). I think the benefit comes from the fingers allowing the uncurling of the disc that is already in progress by the time the fingers start extending, and the fingers extending at the right time is more to minimize loss and interference than to add a significant amount. But when the fingers are messing you up, they are losing you a lot so it seems they are adding a lot of spin when they get synced up to allow the spin to transfer cleanly out of the hand, imo. Also on the point of shoulder rotation not keeping the hand inline with the basket, I think you can keep it moving on the line, it just may not feel like it since the angle the back of the hand is facing is changing. You can do quite a bit of internal shoulder rotation + elbow bend + wrist curl into the middle of your body and then undo the internal rotation with elbow and wrist extension in slow motion in a straight path outwards from the body. If you do only elbow extension + wrist uncurl with internal rotation fixed (elbow stays flared out) then the elbow extension and wrist uncurl all go across to the outer side of the body. You can still yank it to the outer side when externally rotating but it will come out more anny and it’s not as easy to yank it as far to the outer side since the elbow isn’t swinging directly towards the outer side when externally rotating. Isaac example, disc behind forearm / elbow from internal rotation + some wrist curl, then elbow pointing more down at release due to moving from internal to external rotation: i.imgur.com/WTzwUNb.png

    Don't jump off the rear leg. You should get pulled off it by the front leg swing/kick into the plant. I talk about this in my Double Dragon Drill. Also I'd recommend my "Whip Step Drill" for bracing more naturally, vs the over bracing horizontally which is a bit rougher on the body IMO.

    I would take you further backwards into Butt Wipe Drill and focus more on clearing the rear hip turning rear butt cheek back further/deeper. You should be mirroring the frontside in forward swing, and backside in backswing in a standstill. Probably feel your rear glute med(abductor as you say), and should really feel it in Door Frame Drills. Also watch "Hogan Power Move" vids by Shawn Clement for more context.

  • @NickCarroll

    I personally like the idea of using a smaller towel. The discs we throw are 8 inches or so, and the snap of a long towel is more delayed than a shorter one. It may not matter much, but I think a smaller towel is worth considering for this type of drill. It's not so much that we're aiming for the snap, but as a byproduct I think it helps to not deal with a larger towel for this. Also I think if you look at your peak reachback, the hand/disc comes up a bit, and when you swing, it kinda swoops down. That may be an area worth looking into. I've had to battle this, and because of my external rotation, the elbow points down and the hand/disc flies up during my backswing, and then swoops through on the swing. That said, let's get to the important stuff! I found it easier to maintain a beard than trying to keep up a goatee or anything else. I just trim the neck weekly and use a 3-guard on the rest of the beard. Most of the times I'll end up waiting up to a month before trimming it all again. I still try to use a disposable razor to shave my neck every Sunday evening though.

    I learned from my experience that if you keep that fluid motion in your run up which helps to keep the balance and your body weight in the center at all times you don't even have to think about actively bracing. Before I came to that understanding I was really struggling to not fall over the brace. I was trying to mimic Simon as best as I could and then it just clicked for me.

    • @discsmd
      @discsmd Місяць тому

      For most of us, that is true. But I find that there are more than I imagined that don't really know what it means to brace. This was just one way just to get a mental cue for what that feels like. Falling over the brace to me is something different. I have found a lot more people than I thought, just spin on that front foot.

    • @marion1600
      @marion1600 Місяць тому

      @@discsmd yeah falling wasn't the right word maybe. I also used to have this problem where I just couldn't hold my body weight behind the plant and I turned over the brace aka spinned.

    I use a split grip but my index finger is only about a cm away from the middle finger (or less) rather than all the way to the middle of the disc. Learned it from a Lat64 video with Silver Lätt and I'm not sure how much it's helped but I do like it better than the other grips I've tried. I'll try this one though! Thanks to Josh's form review last month I hit over 50 mph on a forehand for the first time and it's actually catching up to my backhand somehow. Wobble is still averaging 8.6 but somehow I naturally throw nose-down without having to think about it so I'm very blessed there. Last thing: I have definitely also heard the advice to grip the disc hard on the forehand. Both in terms of shoving it tight into the palm/between thumb and index and in terms of holding tight with the thumb (one source even said try to hold it so hard you warp the disc a little bit with your thumb). I'll try doing the opposite and see how it goes.

    I think that your arm should be loose enough so that your wrist extends itself at the end due to the centrifugal force. Wrist is the tip of the whip and we want every bit of that whip motion to help us throw farther

    • @discsmd
      @discsmd Місяць тому

      Arm relaxed yes, loose not so much. But I get what you are saying here. The wrist will be forced open by the arm motion almost assuredly. So yes, I agree. It's just not a conscious motion is more the point. You don't consciously snap the wrist open.

    What about the step towards the swing back as your throwing the disk… does the lowere half coil back first?

    • @discsmd
      @discsmd Місяць тому

      There is a lot of discussion on this among the coaches. I think the consensus is that it's perceived as simultaneous. I mean, in the nitpicky view, the hips fire first because they are driven by the brace. But the upper body has to be as close as possible to that timing because speed depends on the hand getting to the hit at the same time as everything else. That's the force generation for your throw.

    I agree with you, Bunky! I know I've personally spent too much time doing form work into a net, and that's not why I got into disc golf. I enjoy watching the discs fly, and outside of visiting a course and warming up before a round, or maybe doing a practice round, I miss the fieldwork. I think there's a connection you get with the disc there that can't be replicated with a net, though the net is arguably better for certain types of feedback. But the soul of the game is in the air!

    I am a new disc golfer (5month). Before DG, I played golf for 40 years with 15 of those years competitive golf was my focus. In golf...short game (150yds in) is king. I have approached disc golf with this educated assumption that the same holds true. In 5 months of focusing 80% of my practice on putting and approach shots I have gone from +38 to +2 on my home course (also up to 280ft BH/220 FH). I also use a net but it literally is 5% or less of my practice and almost exclusively focused on form but NEVER full power into a net. The net is a great tool to help ingrain form changes. But as you point out it's a double edged sword that you are wise to recognize and mitigate as you progress. It's all too easy to break your form trying to go hard and fast with out full flight confirmation. A rule I use that was lifted from golf is to endeavor to never throw a targetless shot. Net work helps with mechanics bit sucks for most of the practice we SHOULD be doing. It's videos like this that raise your contents value IMHO. There is an abundance of snake oil information out there. Thanks for not falling into that category!

      @discsmd Місяць тому

      Thanks! This comment means a lot. I try my hardest to be thoughtful and genuine. Thanks for your insights too! So maybe my 40% 30% 30% framework will still be too much focus on power form. We'll see. Thanks again!

    Great stuff Bunkie. Couldn't agree more. My local field has a couple of spots where you can throw through a tunnel of trees, and I spend most of my practice time there. Every course we play has trees; the golf shots we throw need to hit lines; as you say, practice how you play. Net is fine for working on mechanics, but you don't get to use the TechDisc sim numbers when you're playing a round. And, I don't bag a TechDisc fairway driver to play disc golf. I bag my Muskets, Explorer, Hex, Crave, Watt, etc. I need to know those discs and throw them where I want to. Like Simon Lizotte says (and every pro): Know your bag.

    I really don't have room for a net, but I'm lucky that the local playing fields are only 10 minutes walk away and there's usually space for practise. My usual is to throw for distance and on my return throw at my bag with different shot shapes. I'm sure it's not very original, but I like it. If someone could invent a dog repellant spray for discs, that would make playing field practise even better.

    One of the nice things about ball golf is driving ranges. I thought it would be awesome if there were disc golf driving ranges, but the problems are, the same discs fly very differently due to wear, plastic, weight etc. so you couldn't have "range discs" like range balls, and shagging your discs would be dangerous with other people there. I think the only possibile way would be is if you brought your own discs and there were fast disc shagging robots that could identify your discs and bring them back to you. Not quite feasible yet, but I can dream.

    • @discsmd
      @discsmd Місяць тому

      That would be amazing to have. My dream is to buy about 20 acres near me and put up a course, training facility, and disc shop. Driving range would fit into that plan nicely.
