      Hi great question, it's were the branch split into two new branches (a natural fork in the branch) I cut to length and striped the bark off with knife. Hope this helps answer your question.

      @The Forest School Way I can't thank you enough for the tip about first pushing the knife in around your design, then using that as a guide to flick your wood from or too. It has really made my life easier. I'm watching your video for sharpening now. I've been praying you would answer. I'm really enjoying myself carving everything I think I can pull off. Right now a snake around a sling shot, and a bunny for Easter.

    It it better to use fresh branches or is it okay to use the ones I find in my yard?

      Fresh wood is easier to carve but Dry wood is okay to it just depends on your arm strength ect. You could try one from your yard and if your finding it a little to hard then try fresh. Hope this help happy carving.

    How do you know which way the natural grain of the wood is going?

      Sorry for late reply to your question. the grain runs vertically up the tree as it grows. I find it helps to imagine it like a bunch of straws bundled together. Hope this helps .

    my dad turns 89 next month and I put your video in front of him , he hasn't ever seen youtube . He carves as well but after a small stroke he was forgetting how to get started on the cane he was prepping . He watched you intensely , said "oh he has a Mora you can't get those anymore".. then said at the end 'He knows what he is doing, the right way"

    I know, I know I'm watching the videos Backward. I don't know what I like yet? so I have not started on my stick. In the past I just used my Dremel and my wood Burner, and cut Patterns and Designs. In the last couple months I started wood carving with a Knife and I'm not bad I have carved about 20 Different carvings, and now I want to return to my walking sticks, so what I am trying to say is. Thank you for all your Help It has helped me more then you know.
