HOW TO: Replace an Outdoor Motion Light
In this video, I walk through the process for replacing an outdoor light with a motion sensor that was no longer working. Using mostly basic hand tools (and a cordless drill) we were able to complete this job in under 20 minutes!
As always, when working on electrical projects, be sure to turn off power to the circuit you are working with.

Clever sir, i just subscribed!
Hey Pete, how are you? Happy New Year! Hey send that colonial to me and I’ll finish it for you.
I can confirm this works on 2015 Jeep grand cherokee limted . I purchased 3 sets of different led lights all of them would come on the shut off or 1 light would go out . I tried anti flicker and resistors same result . I purchased the i car pro and j scan app and it work perfectly . Thankyou so much for this valuable information !
I replaced 2014 dodge charger HID with quality philips h11 ultinon fog lights but get flickering bulbs when driving sometimes. It came with a new adapter does 2014 dodge charger need resistors or other things?
Hi Tommy, Can you clarify a bit on your situation? Did you replace HID bulbs with H11 LEDs, or H11 HID bulbs? I would try resistors and then if that doesn’t work, try to use this method described in the video
Thanks for the video. I have a 2009 grand cherokee that the led lights stay on dimly for a minute after turning the vehicle off. Will this setting help with this issue?
Hi Alex, it sounds to me like you might just need a pair of resistors to fix this issue. That would be the cheapest and quickest option to test out before embarking on this effort, which is primarily designed to correct flickering while the vehicle is on.
really complete video showing all aspects of drilling, thank you!
Thanks for watching!
Can this be done on a 2015 Jeep Cherokee i dont see those settings when i do a demo on the JScan app
My JScan app does show support for 2015 Cherokee models, but gives some additional notices regarding extra steps and equipment that wasn’t covered/needed in this video.
Thank you, sir, for well detailed instructions.
Thanks for watching and glad the video was helpful
Really cool vid... Learnt many cool tricks, thanks again

What is the plastic box in the vinyl siding at 4:28 called? I need to replace mine. Any info would be appreciated.
The common name is a siding Block. The one I’m working with goes on before the siding but they can be replaced by unzipping the siding with a tool. www.homedepot.com/p/Malco-SideSwiper-Siding-Removal-Tool-SRT2/100098527 Other styles of siding are surface mounted and are sandwiched between the siding and the light fixture. Happy to help, and thanks for watching!
Was totally stumped as to how to change the light bulb on the Kichler Admirals Cove 1 Light - till I watched your video - so very helpful - thanks
Very informative. Thank you!
Very helpful. Thank you for the great ideas.
Thanks for watching! Happy to help..
Thanks for posting. I've installed a number of outdoor fixtures but haven't done one on siding so I've been checking out videos. Interesting tip to extend the stranded wire a little further. I do prefer to also wind the two wires where the jackets are a bit though. I do put the wire-nuts up though. I especially liked your point about not tightening the mounting screws on the crossbars. I always have but your method makes way more sense and eliminates the frustration of getting the exact distance extended for the acorn nuts to seat properly! I'll be remembering that one thanks.
On my way to change my front lamps right now. Thanks for the video, was very helpful👍
Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Kibler kits are something truly special.
Thanks for posting this, greatly appreciated!

What's the name of the protective and longer extension piece &covering kit for the camera you are using for the driveway ? And where did you purchase it from? Super video.
Hi Carl - Thanks for watching! There are a number of these style protective covers for the Blink cameras. I happened to purchase one from a company called “PEF” through Amazon. If you search Amazon for “cover for blink camera”, you’ll come across products like this: a.co/d/bvoW2Vp Of course, verify that whatever product you decided on works with your generation camera(s) as they do have different fits and locking mechanisms.
Waste of time
I was taught many years ago that when you use a barrel nut adapter (or armorer's wrench) whose 3/8" or 1/2" hole is offset from the center of the barrel, you ratchet the torque wrench so that the installed adapter's offset is PEPENDiCULAR to the torque wrench's shaft (i.e., the torque wrench with adapter is "L-shaped"). That gets rid of the extra length that messes with the wrench's torque calibration.
THANK YOU I had absolutely no idea this was even an option. When I installed my plug and play led headlights from autozone, they would both come on together right away when I would start my car. After I would drive through a well lit part of town my auto lights would turn off resulting in one headlight off and the other headlight still on. Due to the low current of these led headlights, it throws off the auto light sensor system. Making the car think both lights are still off/on when needed.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge
Thanks for watching Vince.. it’s very satisfying being able to help folks on occasion.
Thank you for this video. I have an older home that has fuses instead of breakers and I need to make sure the wires in the panel are tight and looks good. I didn't realize there could be loose wires there possibly causing issues. I hope you will make more videos like this, thank you!
Thanks for watching!
Im totally not a home DIY guy...so, if the fixture switch is off its ok to do this? Or does the power at fuse box need to be turned off?
Fuse box! Most switches only turn off one leg of the power, not both.
I would always recommend ensuring that the power at your panel box is turned off for the circuit you plan to work on before you get started. An electrical meter (such as a Fluke T Plus Pro) will help you determine if you’ve successfully turned off the power.
I noticed the box inside is a switch box instead of an octagon box, is this acceptable to code? never saw a switch box used for a light before.
Great question! It’s technically a 1-gang box and can be used for switch, receptacle or as a junction box.
Thanks @@completepete
Can you come to my house to replace mine? Lol, j/k, thanks, very informative.
That's a really good tip about masking the fixture with painter's tape before adding a bead of caulk to seal it up. I just did that with mine, and it worked great. Thanks.
Thank you so much, from the UK 🇬🇧 🇺🇸❤️
Thanks for watching and I glad if I was able to help in some way! Hope you have a great season on the water..
Hey Pete! About to dive into my first Flintlock build, decided to go with Kibler as well. Curious if you have tried the stain yet? If so, did you end up going with the tannic acid to make it darker? Thanks!
I have not gotten to that point yet, Hoping to get back to it this winter! Jim sent me a couple pieces of scrap maple to practice staining on. I’d suppose a piece of maple from Home Depot could also provide some good practice pieces. Good luck with your project..
@completepete Hi Pete, hope to see you working on the rifle again soon! Watching more of the process and eventually seeing your enjoyment of the completed item will be great. Be well.
@45calibermedic I’m planning to get back to it this winter. Of course there is never enough time to get the “want to do’s” done. Thanks for checking in!
Strap buckle is upside down. You should be pulling tension down.
genius. love your work
I had a bad storm recently and one breaker flipped. I keep trying to move that breaker and it won't stay in place . Any suggestions? It's my back porch and storage room lights. They're off . Kate
Kate, sorry for the delay. You might have gotten some water in your porch receptacle.. curious if the breaker that tripped is a standard type or a ground fault type?
Very helpful 👍
Thanks for watching! Glad I could be of help..
Thanks for your tutorial. As it happens, I have the same setup with an offset Jaylow on my car and aerobars as you have. I am going to secure an SOT kayak flat on the crossbars as in the first part of your video and then secure the second boat I own to the Jaylow as you show so thanks for showing me that. Do you recommend two boats secured to the Jaylow. I have seen others do this on videos and the Yakima website and additionally Yakima touts this as one of the bonus features of the Jaylow. I think the Jaylow is a good good and I like the folding down action. I added yakima crossbar pads to my crossbars so as to keep the SOT boat from shimying on the smooth bars. Do you recommend the wind deflector shield piece at the front of the rack? I will also use bow and stern tie downs. thanks again.
Hi Joshua, I’ve secured two boats to the JayLow without issue on extended trips, just make sure you’re strapping down properly and running your bow/stern lines for an extra layer of “insurance”. I liked the wind deflector solely for noise reduction - in my use case, there was an annoying whistling noise that went away once I installed the deflector!
Thank you for a quick and informative video! I've successfully installed my first 2 outdoor light fixtures after watching this :)
Happy to hear you finished your project. Thank you for the kind words.. nobody has ever said my videos were quick! - Pete
Is it legal how box mounted thank you?
The box hidden behind the siding no. The surface mounted white box, yes.
Cool vid. Very informative! I like those 4 holes on the bracket, I wish mine had them! Thank you for posting!
Thank for watching.. happy to help
Thanks for posting. I think I've contracted Kibler's Disease.

i put a led light in my 2012 chrysler 200 limited and its flickering ..the led that i put is farhen h11 with capacitor ....what shlould i do sir thanks
Hi Michael, You could try to use the JScan app with your car to enable the HID lights function as is demonstrated in the video to see if the car will recognize the change in power draw required and stop flickering. Otherwise, I would say I generally recommend purchasing a high-quality product (which of course will cost you) and, if needed, resistors, to ensure you’re getting the best chance to eliminate flickering or other similar issues. I typically recommend Diode Dynamics, GTR Lighting, or Morimoto if they have a product that works for your car. LasFit is also a decent product but would not be my top choice.
@@completepetewhat i am going to have to try doing also tried few different can bus decoders, tried sylvania led things meant for led blinkers some people it worked on diff cars nope not the 200
I would suggest trying to use the JScan app with your car to enable the HID lights function as is demonstrated in the video to see if the car will recognize the change in power draw required and stop flickering. Otherwise, I would say do your best to ensure you’re using a high-quality bulb (which of course will cost you) such as those made by Diode Dynamics, GTR Lighting, or Morimoto if they have a product that works for your car. LasFit is also a decent product but would not be my top choice.
THANK YOU!
Do you foresee any bowing occurring in the wooden cross supports over time, given the weight of both kayaks? Do you think support underneath would be needed?
We had no bowing issues and just used what we had on hand. You could go with a 2x8, 2x10 or 2x12 for more support, I could stand on the wood we used.
@@completepete I guess I could add a metal support under the 2x8/10/12 to add strength.
Hey how are you. I have a question I had recently bought a kayak and I just bought the NRS 12 ft cam strap I noticed that my cam straps. I noticed that your cam straps are wider and mine is a little bit thinner. How do you get the NRS cam strap that you have? Because I got the heavy duty version
Thanks for watching! My straps are 1.5” wide, so, if yours are thinner than that, (1”, for example), you’d need these instead: www.nrs.com/nrs-15-heavy-duty-straps/pywr Assuming this is the product you bought, I might suggest double checking the measurements yourself - the video could be making them look larger than they actually are!
Fantastic build! Simple and effective.
Thanks for watching…. Glad you enjoyed my video!
Very informative. Thank you.
Thanks so much for watching! Glad you found it helpful.
Thank you for a great idea. Actually, to be simpler, you really don't need the slide-out inner pipe, only using the 2 inch (or maybe next larger size) (which is stronger than 1.5 inch). Cut it long enough to stick out far enough from the side of the car to support the kayak like you did. Strap the pipe to the car rack like you did, sticking out. Then the pipe is strong and won't move. Load the kayak like you did and when done, remove the straps and the temporary loading pipe and place it in the car or strap it to the rack running along the length of the kayak. A number of years ago I was loading my somewhat heavy kayak on top of my Subaru Outback and initially lifted the entire kayak up too fast (IDIOT!!!!), not realizing that I tore my left shoulder rotator cuff, but didn't know for a week or so, then experiencing horrible pain one night for a day or so (thinking I had pulled a muscle), but it did not get better. Couldn't move my arm. Thought I might be having heart problems. Then eventually passed out from the pain and made a rush trip to the emergency room. Ended up having surgery and months of recovery before using my left arm for lifting again. What a pain in the ass (arm) that was. Now considering doing the kayak thing again, so, I like your simpler method. Thank you! 😀
Glad you enjoyed the video and I’m happy to hear you are on the mend! Hope you get back on the water soon!
Instead of looping around the J rack can I loop over the roof rack and over the kayak? Like the first one Kaye the kayak flat. For the quick straps can I put them on the side of the hood not the front?
I don’t see anything wrong with your approach of looping around the crossbars instead of the j hooks - of course, you should test this before transporting your boat accordingly! I personally wouldn’t recommend putting the hood strap on the side of the hood as it could be a weaker area, but, again, I don’t see anything inherently wrong with it as long as you don’t tighten the straps down too much
@@completepeteI’m afraid the J rack isn’t sturdy enough. You made a good point on the side of the hood is a weak point compared to the front where the latch is.
What’s the difference between the icar pro WiFi and the icar pro Bluetooth? It’s also my understanding that I won’t need the cables since I’m going do this for my 2016 jeep compass. I can directly plug this in without the by pass.
The only notable difference is in the way your phone connects to the adapter, either over WiFi, or over Bluetooth. Bluetooth has been a stronger, more reliable connection in my experience, but for what will hopefully be limited usage, I’d pick the one that is least expensive! Based on some brief research, I’d agree that you should be able to connect without the gateway cables In your model year!
@@completepete does that mean one would always have to be connected to wifi for the lights to be able to stay on and not flicker? In other words, do the settings that are applied through the device you’ve shown here, do those settings stay permanent while the device is connected? Do I always need to be connected to WiFi for it to operate?
The device itself emits a wireless network for your phone to connect to when in use - it doesn’t connect to your home’s WiFi, or any other WiFi you might connect to throughout the course of your day. Once you make the setting changes and they are written to the vehicle’s computer, there is no need for the device to remain connected, or for it to ever be connected again in the future unless you’re using it to do something different
@@completepete thank you so much I really appreciate the help and the detailed explanation, I finished ordering one of these for myself earlier today. Thank you.
What is the roof rack you use?
This setup used Yakima Aerobars, the width should be generally proportionate to the width of your vehicle, but having them be slightly longer is certainly ok.
@@completepete thanks, I have a 2015 scion XV and want to get good roof racks for my SUV and now I have a sit in 10 foot kayak. My friend has a THULE on her Ford SUV. And I also hear good things about the one you recommend and one other
