NW Challenge 2023 - 2nd Open
Larry and the Marysville crew + lots of volunteers put on an awesome L2 match for my 2nd match with the Nevermiss 2011! Unfortunately I ran into some new ejector issues that cost the match, but was able to sort it out after the match with some help. It's a new platform to me and I can't neglect it like the Czechmates, but it is gorgeous and so much fun to shoot!
I'm having a lot of fun getting back on the open horse and things are coming back much faster than expected!

About half way through the video I noticed my shoulders weren't really activated and you can see me push my shoulders forward to get better activation; it doesn't seem to make a huge difference on magnitude of recoil but it does seem to improve re...

Since releasing my 15,000 round Czechmate review over a year ago I've had a lot of folks ask if I would make a dedicated video on the mag tuning process for the CZ large frame 9mm magazines. New gun is 9 Major as well. I don’t have that many rounds through it because I’ve been busy with other things, but it definitely requires more attention to keep it running properly. Some of it should improve as the gun wears in, and it’s nothing major, just removing slide and wiping out any buildup maybe mid way through a match. I did have an extractor issue but I think that’s sorted out.

      @@LeelandOC I would recommend you ask every single person shooting a 9 Major 2011 at your local matches if you can shoot theirs after the match! I settled on this Nevermiss gun because it was the only 9 Major gun I've shot where I felt there was a significant performance benefit worth paying for - most of the 9 Major builds I shot weren't significantly better than my Czechmates with titanium comp, popples, and brass grips, you're mostly just paying for better fit and finish. Looking back to my original Czechmate 15k review from 2021, my thoughts have not changed a whole lot. The Czechmates are very good value, you can almost buy two of them for the price of a semi-custom or small shop 2011. 100% of people will be a better shooter if they buy a Czechmate and spend the thousands of dollars difference in price on practice ammo.

    • @jordan-rogers-uspsa
      @jordan-rogers-uspsa Рік тому

      Hahaha the Czechmates aren't gone; I'll keep them around at least until I get a backup and I'll do a side-by-side video comparing the two. It may have a slow slide return right now, it definitely looks a bit slower than the one I shot in this video: ua-cam.com/video/sIezLrCnB-w/v-deo.html, though the angle might just make that one look faster. It's running an 8lb spring (vs 10 or 11 in my Czechmate slomo videos) and this gun is extremely tight and only has ~500 rounds through it since coating, so it will wear in a bit over the next few matches.

    Would you have any tips on getting the dot to settle down

    • @jordan-rogers-uspsa
      @jordan-rogers-uspsa Рік тому

      You need to work on your grip. One of the best drills is to go set up a tuxedo target at 10-15 yards and practice doubles while experimenting with grip position and grip pressure and see what gets you the most repeatable and fastest dot return. The dot does not need to completely stop, it just needs to settle into an acceptable position to fire the next shot. "Acceptable" is different on a 5 yard open target than a 20 yard headshot

      Springs: 11lb recoil and I think 21lb main (I went up a few lbs from factory to reduce the mushiness of the trigger. Bullet: 115gr Montana Gold FMJ OAL: 1.16" Cases: mixed brass, no idea the length, no one trims pistol brass Load: I use HS6 and CCI Small Pistol Magnum Primers. If you're using HS6 and 115gr bullets I would do ladder testing with a chronograph starting at 8.0gr, aiming for 170PF, ~1480fps. Zero: I typically zero at 20yds. Shorter range zeroes for open give you a very large offset at longer distances. Reaming: I bought a throating reamer and reamed all my barrels so I can load longer. Some FMJ profiles will let you load to 1.16" without reaming, but reaming gives you more flexibility in what you can load.

    • @jordan-rogers-uspsa
      @jordan-rogers-uspsa Рік тому

      @@RangeIsHott I chose 115s and HS6 because that is what the internet gurus recommended at the time I was starting and it worked fine. I did try 124s and felt like the 115s were marginally better -- in theory the higher charge weight with 115s gives you more gas to work the compensator. I never experimented with different powders, though I have heard AA7 is a great one and a number of people have switched from HS6 to AA7. I will probably test it out once I near the end of my current supply of HS6. At a certain point you need to stop doing load development and just start practicing and working on your grip since grip is way more important than the perfect load. CZC charged $225 for the popples and I think it was a worthwhile improvement. It shouldn't decrease barrel life but it does require loading even hotter (about .2gr in my case), which could increase the chance of slide cracking over time I suppose. CZC or Cajun Gun Works would both probably mill yours for a lefty thumb rest. I think the brass grips and magwell increased the balance of the gun. It's not a "must have" modification, but it's a nice improvement. If I was doing it again I would get the Patriot Defense grips instead of the Lok because the PD grips are much more aggressive.

      Sebo also makes a steel version of their compensator, but they are the only manufacturer I am aware of making aftermarket options. I don't have any first hand experience with the TS2 but none of the changes CZ made from the TSO to the TS2 seem like they make a meaningful difference on performance; I'm not expecting major changes for any Czechmate 2, probably just a more modern optic and maybe improved balance. The factory muzzle device with the front sight on it has the front sight milled directly into it, so you would have to drill a hole in it to run a piece of fiber through, which would be difficult without at least a drill press and very good fixturing. There's TSO is nearly identical to the Czechmate when the latter is in iron sights configuration -- the only difference is the Czechmate's front sight is a sight block style, but the TSO comes with a fiber front sight.

      I'm not really sure where the dimensions come from originally. Enough folks have had success with following them that I assume they are at least close to correct, but I think the visual-based tuning is a lot more approachable for most folks.

    Hi Jordan. Great video. What do you think about 26 rounders mags + CZC base pads (extended 170mm) +Grams Spring/Follower Kit CZ Tactical Sport / Czechmate 13 coils?

    • @jordan-rogers-uspsa
      @jordan-rogers-uspsa Рік тому

      Nothing wrong with that setup, they will still need to be tuned but that is what most folks run for their 170mm mags. However, now that MBX offers 170s I don't see any reason to deal with the CZ 26rd tubes unless you already have them and don't want to deal with the hassle of selling them. It costs ~$180 to set up a 26rd mag + CZC extension and spring. MBX 170mm mags are $159, so you're saving money and shouldn't have to deal with tuning. The main reason I have Springer Precision extensions is because it cost about $90 to set up each of my 170s and they needed to be tuned either way.

    Are there no springs that will last through being fully compressed? I have not heard of springs getting weak in normal OEM mags, is it right that this is all because the spring is at the absolute limit of "what will work" just to get max rounds in a magazine of a maximum length?

    • @jordan-rogers-uspsa
      @jordan-rogers-uspsa Рік тому

      It's less of an issue with OEM mags than it is with mags with extensions. With OEM mags there is usually more spring than necessary, so as the spring compresses over time there is still plenty of energy to feed every round. As I mentioned in the video, I've never replaced my 140mm mag springs. Once you are adding extensions and extended springs the springs are usually designed to be "just enough" to feed reliably for a while maximizing capacity. For example, if my 170mm springs had two more coils they might never need to be replaced, but I would probably loose one round of capacity because 29 is a really tight fit. You can stretch springs out if they become too compressed, but they'll never go back to 100% new position so stretching is only a stop-gap until fresh springs.

    Outstanding video! I've done everything you show to my mags but I had to find different tweaks in different places. You have everything in one place. One note - the tuning is exactly the same for the CZ big sticks as it is for the short mags with the 170 extension - I feel like those are more reliable than the extensions but I have no evidence to back it up. I'm curious about the optic mount you have - did you have issues with the single sided mount? Again - thanks for another fantastic video.

    • @jordan-rogers-uspsa
      @jordan-rogers-uspsa Рік тому

      The factory big sticks are probably a bit easier to tune because even with the short CZC extension the bullet stack never goes below the control rib (the follower might though) -- it still has the issue with the double stack to single stack transition though so they are not 100% reliable, especially with JHPs. I swapped to the double sided mounts for two reasons. (1) screws will loosen eventually, with 1/3 loose there is a good chance you need to re-zero the gun, with 1/5 loose you can probably just re-torque the loose one and be fine. (2) I had two Romeo 3XL dots break with relatively low round counts (2.5k and 5k) when using the CZC mount -- I heard via a Sig sponsored shooter that the optics department recommended double sided mounts for Open guns and all of the RMAs for dots on Open guns came from single sided mounts... seemed weird to me, but I figured in combination with (1) it was worth the swap. Both of mine survived all last season but I can't definitively say it's the mount swap, improved QC from Sig, or Sig gave me hand-picked replacements after my RMAs.
