Revolvering in the Cold - Marysville USPSA February 2022

  • Wrapped up February with a cold match at Marysville. Main match takeaways: (1) even with my slow reloads it's generally better to eat a standing reload than leave a known miss, (2) short stroking in the middle of 8 shot arrays is painful - need to train this out and do a better job keeping hands warm in the cold. Overall I think my shooting is getting better with the revolver, I'm getting much more consistent hits on open targets and not transitioning too early as much, though I'm still having a hard time with iron sights and partials/small steel.
This was my 4th revolver match which means I'll finally earn my initial classification. Unfortunately the 3% from my very first one is really dragging my average down so I'll end up as an A class because of my Open division Master classification (actual average is ~65%, low B). My other 3 classifiers have an average of 85.4% so I think bumping to master class this year is obtainable if I mix in one revolver match a month going forward and work on reloads.

That grip after a reload is a pain to get just right! I shoot a V comp back here in Utah. You're a hot shoe man, stay with it!

I find the revolver grip consistency much harder to get right because the grip is fairly featureless. On semi-autos I can get nice and high into the beavertail but I obviously don't have that with the revolver. I get a pretty consistent index with the left hand thumb on the cylinder shield but I'm still figuring out the right hand.

Excellent shooting, especially the strong/weak hand only!

I noticed you switch between weak and strong hand reloads every once in a while. Which method do you prefer?

I have switched to doing all weak hand reloads, I found them to be much more consistent for me. In theory strong hand reloads can be faster because both of your hands are always doing something, but there are a lot more opportunities to mess up too. I found that my best strong hand reloads were not much faster than my best weak hand ones but my worst strong hand ones were really slow and messed up my grip, so it was a pretty clear choice for me.

(1:11) Yuck standards stages with copious amounts of WHO/SHO! I dare say you did better than me!

From a match director point of view I think they should have left out all or all but maybe one plate per side and just put technical paper targets out there (IMO a Virginia count all paper stage would be best). Those were hard shots even for experienced shooters and I think it was unnecessarily cruel towards less experienced shooters. There were multiple people with total stage times over two minutes for this stage, which also poses a significant match flow challenge.
