Why BECOMING KARL LAGERFELD fails – Review & Analysis
Disney+ is showing a series about Germany's most famous fashion designer: ‘Becoming Karl Lagerfeld’ focuses on the 1970s, when Lagerfeld was already designing women's fashion for Chloé and Fendi, but the realm of Parisian haute couture remained closed to him. Yves Saint Laurent and his patron and partner Pierre Bergé reigned there. Ambitious and ruthless with himself and others, Lagerfeld worked on his rise. Meanwhile, he also meets the love of his life: the aristocratic bon vivant Jacques de Bascher, who will gradually destroy himself. The love will not become physical, which jazzes up the series into an oversized problem. What's more, ‘Becoming Karl Lagerfeld’ constantly adopts a Lieschen Müller perspective that exudes no charm whatsoever, instead showing us a sour-faced man who is played by Daniel Brühl, who bears no resemblance to Lagerfeld, as if he worked at the tax office. More from Wolfgang M. Schmitt in the new film analysis!

MAY DECEMBER - The most intelligent film of the year! - Review & Analysis
Переглядів 6223 місяці тому
Todd Haynes is a master of sophisticated melodrama that radically questions our perception and understanding of truth. In "May December", Natalie Portman plays the actress Elizabeth, who is faced with a special domestic challenge: she is to play a woman who had a relationship with a 13-year-old boy in her mid-thirties, became pregnant by him, went to prison and later married him and started a f...
What and how we desire: CHALLENGERS - Review & Analysis
Переглядів 5753 місяці тому
After ‘Call Me By Your Name’ and ‘Bones and All’, Luca Guadagnino is bringing another film to cinemas that deals with our desires. ‘Challengers - Rivals’ is very different to the previous films. It is not a romantic film, but an almost cynical study of the structure of desire. Friends Art and Patrick, played by Mike Faist and Josh O'Connor, become bitter rivals when they meet Tashi (Zendaya). B...
Who are we? THE SEARCHERS by John Ford - Review & Analysis
Переглядів 8604 місяці тому
Who are we? Is there such a thing as national or cultural identity? Who does our seemingly open society exclude? How much Donald Trump is there in John Wayne? And have those who constantly talk about anti-Americanism ever studied John Ford? "The Searchers" or "The Black Falcon" is the film of the moment and at the same time one of the most important works in the entire history of film. In it, J...
CIVIL WAR and Alex Garland's Philosophy on Photography - Review & Analysis
Переглядів 1,2 тис.5 місяців тому
After ‘Men’, ‘Ex machina’ and ‘Devs’, Alex Garland takes a completely different path: ‘Civil War’ is a war film and a road movie - however, the story is not set in a country that is already shaken by civil wars, but the action takes place in the USA in the near future. The president is in his third term of office and a bloody battle is raging outside, in which Texas and California, of all place...
Election advertising for Trump: THE BEEKEEPER - Review & Analysis
Переглядів 8815 місяців тому
David Ayer is a director known for his lack of taste. It should come as no surprise that his films are also very popular with right-wing audiences. Now, however, Ayer has gone one step further with "The Beekeeper", in which he has made an almost two-hour long campaign ad for Donald Trump. Jason Statham plays the role of a vengeful beekeeper who not only wants to take down an online fraudster an...
The Anti-Dune-Movie: KUNG FU PANDA 4 - Review & Analysis
Переглядів 7956 місяців тому
The successful "Kung Fu Panda" series, which began back in 2008, has another instalment: in part 4, Panda Po has to make friends with a new career prospect. Master Shifu has set higher tasks for Po: He is no longer to be a dragon warrior, but is to become the spiritual leader of the entire valley. Po is not at all enthusiastic about this at first, as he is popular with the people as a dragon wa...
The ideology of charismatic leaders: DUNE PART TWO - Review & Analysis
Переглядів 2,3 тис.6 місяців тому
Denis Villeneuve is back with some truly impressive images: "Dune: Part Two" is a monumental film that largely rejects the usual blockbuster spectacle and instead reflects almost contemplatively on power and domination in places. This long-awaited film is therefore a multi-layered commentary on our (geopolitical) present, in which the voices of reason are barely heard. Villeneuve leads us to a ...
The banned Disney film: SONG OF THE SOUTH

When the Disneyplus streaming portal is available all over the world, all of the studio's classic films that have already been removed from competing platforms will be available to watch. However, one film, as is already apparent in the USA, will be missing: "Song Of The South". The film was released in 1946, cartoon characters meet actors in it, the technical innovations are enormous - and the...
Unfortunately the movie of the hour: REBEL MOON Part 1 - A Child of Fire - Review & Analysis
Переглядів 8198 місяців тому
"Rebel Moon - Part 1: A Child of Fire" is the name of Zack Snyder's new film, which has been high up in the Netflix charts for a few weeks now. Snyder would actually have liked to have made a "Star Wars" film that was dramaturgically based on the "Seven Samurai". However, as George Lucas once refused to allow this, the director of "300" and "Justice League" has now produced fan fiction that fea...

The Best Western: HATARI! - Review & Analysis
Переглядів 1,3 тис.8 місяців тому
Howard Hawks is undoubtedly one of the most important representatives of Classical Hollywood and "Hatari!" from 1962 is a highlight in his filmography. Almost an idyll, with great landscape shots and stars such as John Wayne and Hardy Krüger, but it should by no means be received as apolitical. "Hatari!" - which could be described as the most beautiful western of all time - is undoubtedly one o...
Disney and the Ideology of Meritocracy: WISH - Review & Analysis

Disney wants to make wishes come true - and has been doing so for 100 years. The anniversary is to be celebrated with "Wish", which is the 62nd entry in the so-called Masterpieces series. However, it is doubtful that this animated film will be a big hit at the box office, as the story is told in an awkward way, the songs are hardly worth mentioning and aesthetically it is based a little on the ...

Here’s my take. The opening sequence is the key. The gutter is breaking away from the building and clearly isn’t going to hold. Scotty grip fails and he also falls to his death, just like his colleague. A shocking tragedy, for sure. The rest of the movie focuses on Scotty’s spirit who has not accepted his own physical death. The other characters are also dead and have their own unresolved spiritual issues that relate to manner of their deaths, jealousy, love lost, murder and suicide. The musical score by Bernard Hermann is so perfectly crafted and compelling in describing this spirit world that I listened to it nonstop for weeks.

How many of you guys would wife a girl like Jenny, seriously? She was already living a promiscuous lifestyle by the time she finally hooked up with Gump. Obviously he wasn't wearing protection, so who's to say she didn't leave him a little something extra other than the kid, which BTW she kept from him all that time until she finally realised she was dying. I have no doubt that he really loved her. But then again he was autistic and probably didn't know better, very much unlike Jenny ofc.

This was a great review. The only thing missing is an analysis of the involvement of race. It may not have the same effect in Germany, but here in the US, white Americans love to use movies like this to deny racism is the cause of racial inequalities and Hollywood loves to make these movies to push that narrative. They say,"look at Chris Gardner. It's not racism; all those other black people just don't work hard enough."

Extremely interesting thoughts, Sir. I think what you have here is a homily on this film as found object. You surely don't believe Hitchcock was making such statements through The Birds -- or anything else philosophical? If you do, great, and who can say you're wrong.

Plausibility kills it. Like many of Hitch's films. But he was an expert at getting us to suspend our beliefs. SPOILERS: Expecting us to believe a guy would pre-arrange the strangling of his wife atop a bell tower in public, throw her off, screaming. And then walk back down the stairwell and walk away, all WITH your accomplice, completely un-noticed by anyone? Relying on a nervous breakdown is a lot to invest in.
