What and how we desire: CHALLENGERS - Review & Analysis

- After ‘Call Me By Your Name’ and ‘Bones and All’, Luca Guadagnino is bringing another film to cinemas that deals with our desires. ‘Challengers - Rivals’ is very different to the previous films. It is not a romantic film, but an almost cynical study of the structure of desire. Friends Art and Patrick, played by Mike Faist and Josh O'Connor, become bitter rivals when they meet Tashi (Zendaya). Both boys start courting what they call the hottest woman in the world - and that means above all that they have to win, because this Tashi doesn't tolerate losers next to her. All three are tennis players and dream of a great career, but Tashi's dream comes to an abrupt end when she injures her knee. Art is very successful, but has to contend with a losing streak, while Patrick struggles through with rather insignificant tournaments. ‘Challengers’ is a pleasurable film that wants us viewers to enjoy the beautiful bodies. But it is also a film that presents a dilemma that cannot be solved. More on this from Wolfgang M. Schmitt in the film analysis!
