  • When the Disneyplus streaming portal is available all over the world, all of the studio's classic films that have already been removed from competing platforms will be available to watch. However, one film, as is already apparent in the USA, will be missing: "Song Of The South". The film was released in 1946, cartoon characters meet actors in it, the technical innovations are enormous - and there was an Oscar for the song "Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah", which is still known today, and the black lead actor James Baskett was also honoured with an Academy Award. Today, the Disney company is distancing itself from this film, which is set on a 19th century plantation in Georgia - or rather, Disney is simply cowardly ducking away. The accusation is that the film portrays black people in a highly discriminatory way and glorifies their situation on the plantations. That's true, but it's even worse: the film is very transparent about how Disney's ideology basically works. But how should we deal with this delicate film heritage? More on this from Wolfgang M. Schmitt in the film analysis!

Excellent analysis. I think it's worth mentioning that one of the movie's screenwriters (Maurice Rapf) seems to have had intentions to critically represent racial relations in the Br'er Rabbit stories but was shut down by Disney. In fact, the originally African-American folklore stories seem to even have been intentionally alterered to make sure that such allusions are impossible. These stories were popular among the slaves and perfectly suited for subversive messaging. However, the movie made sure to remove any unwanted racial subtext by having all the characters being voiced by African-American actors speaking the stereotypical African-American Vernacular English (something that seems rather unproblematic these days but was criticized by black critics back in the day). Similarly, Br'er Rabbit gets caught in Br'er Fox's trap not because he is trying to steal from him (like in the original folktale) but because of mere chance or stupidity, once again any more serious undertones and political subtext are removed.

🎉hallo here is Martha. I know this movie and i even remember watching it as a very small child on television or video. It was maybe 1993 or 1991. I just know that the oldguy was singing and that people said that this was to racist and the stereotypes were too much... i remember him wearing a jeans "Latzhose" and a hat and it was like Space Jam. Real Guy and cartoon characters... I am happy about the analisys... 😊 also black people in Dumbo are portraited racist... 😮
