CIVIL WAR and Alex Garland's Philosophy on Photography - Review & Analysis

  • After ‘Men’, ‘Ex machina’ and ‘Devs’, Alex Garland takes a completely different path: ‘Civil War’ is a war film and a road movie - however, the story is not set in a country that is already shaken by civil wars, but the action takes place in the USA in the near future. The president is in his third term of office and a bloody battle is raging outside, in which Texas and California, of all places, have joined forces against the autocratic president. We follow two female photographers and two war reporters on their way from New York to the White House in Washington. Many critics are disappointed by ‘Civil War’ because they were hoping for an analysis of the American present, but Alex Garland is concerned with fundamental issues: he philosophises about the nature of war photography. More on this from Wolfgang M. Schmitt in the new film analysis!

I’m an English native speaker and I have been living in Germany for many years. German school system teaches English on the basis of grammar knowledge and written tests. Sadly there is no emphasis on spoken English and the teachers themselves cannot pronounce English correctly. To improve your pronunciation get yourself an English girlfriend who will correct all your mistakes or spend a month with an English speaking family. I still have a foreign accent when I speak German but I’m told it’s very mild and nobody can guess where I come from (Scotland). Find yourself a native speaker at your local university or somewhere and have some conversations. Alles gute aus Rheinland Pfalz…. Übung macht den Meister 😅

I was wondering that too and my only explanation is that he filmed this video right after he did the German version of "Challengers", which is a tennis movie. So, maybe he wanted to add a touch of tennis to that film analysis and forgot to take it off for the English version of "Civil War"? Or maybe he wanted to take it off, but the hair looked impossible, so he put it back on? Hard to tell.. (I don't take him to be the kind of person to miss anything esp. to do with styling, but that's my best guess: it has something to do with the previous filming)
