It's a classic. Another NZ classic is well represented in a live recording on 95bfm, very much in the KEXP mould, Verlaine's 'CD, Jimmy Jazz and me' They were a big influence on Pavement, and many other better-known indie bands
For some odd reason I just never listened to The Chills. I've literally heard their name for decades. Smh. Loving the contrast of those pretty, twinkly guitars and Martin's rough around the edges vocals. Thanks for sharing!!
I’m vey familiar with this song now, don’t recall hearing them back in the day. I only became aware of them in the early 90’s when I became a fan of Luna. Bass player Justin Harwood was a founding member , along with Dean Wareham.
@@boq780_2.0 thanks for the recomendation! My knowledge of their output goes up to the Ready to Fly album so I've got some catching up to do. Wishlisted for Christmas!
John Peel used to play this track a lot and is probably how most of us became aware of The Chills. Very haunting. That's a tragic Martin Phillipps back story I didn't know anything about. Finding out they have done a relatively recent KEXP session was thrilling but learning Martin is dead is a bit of a sting in the tale. A John Peel video collection Gimme Shelter from the 80's features both The Chills and The Verlaines. Plenty other great bands on collection also worth checking out.
As a massive John Peel fan I have so many John Peel collections and sessions, missed out on the one you mention, so another one to add to my list. Thank you.
RIP Martin Phillipps, singer/songwriter. I used to chat with him frequently here in Dunedin and visited him occasionally in Tainui (tie-NOO-ee). My cousin Scott (their manager) discovered his body. The Chills were a leading band in the Dunedin Sound scene, NZ's equivalent of the Paisley Underground. Other Dunedin Sound bands include The Clean (who you've heard), The Bats, The Verlaines, and Straitjacket Fits. Influential, too. Everyone from Pavement to Yo La Tengo cites Dunedin music as an influence. Try The Chills' song Heavenly Pop Hit, The Bats' "North By North", The Verlaines' "Doomsday", or Straitjacket Fits' "She Speeds". I don't know the inspiration for this track, but I suspect it was influenced by a song by fellow New Zealanders Split Enz, "Charly", which had a similar lyrical theme and came out in about 1977. BTW, this isn't the line-up you mentioned (that's certainly not Callum on bass).
Well, I immediately latched on to that vocal melody thinking I'd heard this before, but I haven't. What I have heard is a song called Dusseldorf by London band Teleman, which I enjoy. This Chills song has gotta have been a strong 'influence' on Teleman. Both very good i.m.o.
Makes me realise how little I know about New Zealand bands. I loved The Suburban Reptiles and The Scavengers, but didn’t really pay much heed to whether they came from Australia or New Zealand after that. My bad for not researching enough. First time listening to this song. You assume it’s about murder. I don’t know the backstory to this song, but it could be just as much about giving your fiancé an accidental overdose of heroin then finding her dead next time you in bed the next morning and the pain and the guilt you feel about it, and for introducing her to people who you didn’t want to be part of her and your new life, but it’s hard to get rid of people like that, they turn up unannounced even though you have told them to keep away, and you end up tempted to do it just one more time before you get married in the next fortnight and your fiancée wants to do a bit just so as she ‘understands’ you more and the pain you have been through, but it all goes horribly wrong and you wake up crying every morning thinking what the hell have I done?

Agreed, that was an enjoyable listen.

I have the Kalidescope World comp and love it. This song is definately a standout. Keep the NZ bands coming! Echo the request for Verlaines.
Verlaines are my favourite of those bands. Their last LP, 'Dunedin Spleen' was exceptional.

@@MrKrayer it's definitely up there with their best. Some exceptional songs.
