Unravelling the Mystery: What Does 'PhD' Really Mean?

Good morning! Happy Monday! I have a friend who has just had her public presentation for her Ph.D. degree in education management, and that got me thinking, “Why do we call this degree “a doctorate” because it is not really about the medical profession, and what “PhD” stands for. If you were wondering the same, today’s video is for you.
What I found out is that the term "PhD" is short for "Doctor of Philosophy.", “Ph” stands for the word “philosophy”, and “D” for the word “doctor”. The word "doctor" comes from the Latin word "docere," which means "to teach." Originally, the title of doctor was given to people who were qualified to teach at a university. The term "philosophy" in this context doesn't refer only to the study of philosophy as we commonly understand it but to a broader meaning of a deep love for learning and understanding things.
The idea of a "PhD" as we know it today started in Germany in the 1800s. It was a way to say, "Hey, this person is super good at their subject, and they did a lot of research to prove it.” The PhD degree gained popularity and recognition over time, spreading to other countries and fields of study. It became a symbol of expertise and mastery in a specific area of knowledge.
Nowadays, a PhD is the highest level of education you can get. People who want one have to spend a long time studying and doing research on a specific topic. They have to figure out new things and share that knowledge with the world. So, I am really proud of my friend who got her "PhD" degree by working really hard to learn and discover new things about her area of expertise. What I would recommend in your situation is to find a language coach that specialises in IELTS and have a few sessions with him or her. I am sure you can find a tutor on one of the teaching sites, such as Preply. Good luck!
