Good morning and happy Monday! Today I am starting a new rubric in my Happy Monday videos titled “Interesting word.” I will take a word that is widely used and explain its origins. I am a linguist, so for me anything language-related is fascinating, and if you share my passion for languages, then you might find this type of video interesting as well. Today I want to talk to you about the word Spam. Have you ever wondered why this word is used for the bulk messages that are sent to your Inbox? It actually has a very interesting origin. It comes from the American canned pork product called SPAM or spiced ham that looked like this. How did it get to your Inbox? Well, in the 1970s there was a very popular comedy sketch by the British comedy troupe called Monty Python where some people come to a restaurant and ask what is on the menu. The waiter answers that they have eggs with SPAM, bacon with SPAM, sausage with SPAM, SPAM with SPAM, SPAM with everything. You can watch this short clip. Then all the other clients in the restaurant who were Vikings for some reason started singing “Spam, spam, spam, spam”, like this.
Then in the 1980s and 1990s, there was a platform for chat and sometimes people would just spam the chat with silly words and silly information, sometimes using the word SPAM. Then in 1993 some person accidentally sent 200 messages and when talking about it later he used this word - Spam. That’s how later on when software developers created a separate folder where you get only messages that are sent to multiple recipients, they called it SPAM, or sometimes it is called Bulk or Junk. In Gmail, it is called SPAM.
I hope you enjoyed this video and learned something interesting today. Have a great day and a fun week! Bye!
