Good morning! Happy Monday! My today’s video is a continuation of the last week’s topic of sleep. There is this phrase that you might have heard in movies "Goodnight, sleep tight, don't let the bed bugs bite", I even used it to put my children to bed, but have you ever wondered how can you “sleep tight”, why tight? And what are bed bugs, anyway? I did some research and this phrase has been used for centuries to wish someone a peaceful night's sleep. Its origin can be traced back to old-fashioned beds and the presence of bed bugs.
In the past, beds were made differently. They had ropes that held the mattress in place. Before going to sleep, people had to tighten the ropes to make the bed comfortable. So, "sleep tight" meant to make the bed secure.
Now, bed bugs are small bugs that feed on blood. The mattresses were often stuffed using straw or feathers. These materials attracted bed bugs and in the past, they would infest bedding and furniture, biting sleeping people and causing itchy bites. Thankfully, bed bugs are not a very widespread problem nowadays, it is often used by parents or caregivers when tucking children into bed.
Next time when you go to sleep, remember to “sleep tight and don’t let the bed bugs bite”. Have a fun day and a peaceful night!
