Good morning! Happy Monday! If I asked you to take a piece of paper and a pen and write down as many words or expressions as you can that can complete the sentence “Language Learning is…”, what would you write? Would you write difficult, fun, exciting, boring, not for me, something I don’t have the time for, a useful hobby, is good for my brain, etc. You can actually do that and see what comes out. Then, look at your list and see, what is the dominant vibe there, positive or negative. If your words and expressions are mostly negative, it might be that you have some so-called limiting beliefs about language learning. Limiting beliefs are thoughts that you have and consider the absolute truth, but in reality, they might not even be true and on top of that they can hinder your progress in a certain area, in this case, language learning. These beliefs can be self-imposed or come as a result of some external factors. Today I would like to go through some examples of limiting beliefs in language learning and hope that you will examine your own beliefs and see if they are really true.
One of the limiting beliefs that I hear often is, “I am too old to learn a new language”. But neuroscience research states that there is such a thing as neuroplasticity, and you can build neuronal pathways in your brain at any age.
Another one can be, “I don’t have a talent for languages”. While it is true that some people are naturally more talented than others when it comes to language learning, everyone can learn another language, you’ve learned your mother tongue, so what stops you from learning another one?
Some of you say that you don’t have time to learn a new language. In essence, what you are saying is that learning a new language is not a priority for you right now, because you always find time and money for the things that are on your priority list.
So, what to do with your limiting beliefs? The first step is to identify them, then see how accurate they are, then think of a new positive belief for your limiting beliefs, and every time your old limiting beliefs start forming in your mind, replace them with positive ones. And, the most important thing, is don’t give up and keep on progressing, one day at a time.
Have a wonderful day free of limiting beliefs and full of inspiration and creativity! Bye!
