Hi, my name is Natalya Khazova, I am US National and International coach and choreographer, and I coach figure skaters at the Broadmoor World Arena Ice Hall in Colorado Springs, Colorado for over 25 years.
One day I was going through my notes that I collected during my 35 year coaching career and I thought they may be helpful to skaters and coaches if I organized all my exercises into practice videos.
I will try to release something new and useful every week, and with time I plan to cover all areas of skating, such as skating skills, moves in the field, spins, and jump exercises, as well as off ice training, which will include exercises for balance, coordination, quickness, flexibility, strength and conditioning.
Some of my videos have a detailed explanation on my website:

Thank you so much! I’m so glad this video was helpful for you and your skaters. Mohawks are such an important skill, and I’m excited for you to try these exercises with them.
I really wish you would make more videos for beginners; both skaters and coaches. I’ve been teaching for 3 years now but, inevitably, as soon as my skaters start making progress, their parents notice the higher level skaters and switch to their coaches. I’m finally at the point where I have a group of 4 skaters starting to jump and spin, but I feel a lot of pressure for them to show progress and I could use some tips and advice. Such as, how to get them to push on to an outside edge for a forward spin and waltz jump, and how to teach half-flip, toe loop, salchow and even flip and loop WITHOUT 3 turn. This is hard because they learn these jumps in learn to skate and really struggle to do them correctly without the momentum from the three turn. Also, I would love some warm of exercises for them, mainly something that incorporates their arms. Thank you in advanced, I love your videos.

I'm an adult beginner and I'm finding my front of my hips to be quite sore after becoming better at one-legged anything on ice I'm unable to get to sleep right away unless I lay on my belly on the floor for a while is this about poor core muscles or? Thank you
Thank you for sharing! Soreness in the front of your hips is common as you build strength. It’s likely due to tight or overworked hip flexors. Try gentle hip flexor stretches (like a low lunge) and core/glute strengthening exercises to balance the workload. Lying on your belly stretches the hip flexors, which can help. If the soreness persists, consider consulting a physical therapist. Great job on your progress!
I love your channel so much! I started skating at 15, but stopped at Pre-Freestyle. I picked it back up last year at 50 yrs old. It’s definitely different now. I have some muscle memory, with skills I don’t need to think about (t-stops) and I never fall. But I have much more fear & and take less risks. I’m currently stalled at forward outside 3 turns because my fo edges need work (afraid I’ll tip over). I hope to change that story soon. Thanks for all your encouraging videos! 🙏
Thank you so much for your kind words and for sharing your story! It’s inspiring that you’ve returned to skating after so many years. It’s normal to be more cautious, but your muscle memory is a big asset. For your forward outside edges and three turns, try simple edge exercises and gliding drills to build confidence and balance. Small, consistent practice will help you feel more secure over time. You’ve got this-keep going, and I’m here cheering you on!
Great job! ❤ Thank you very much!
@@АлександраСечина-е2у Thank you so much! I’m glad you enjoyed it!
I started a couple years ago in my mid 40s. I have made so much progress in two years and it is so good for physical and mental health. I skate with people of all ages, from preteen children to mid 70s. You either love it or you don't, there's only one way to find out.
Thank you so much for sharing your story! It’s inspiring to hear about your progress and how skating has positively impacted both your physical and mental health. I completely agree-skating is such a unique sport that brings together people of all ages and backgrounds. The only way to truly know if you’ll love it is to give it a try! Keep enjoying every moment on the ice, and here’s to many more years of skating!
Thank you so much for sharing your skating journey and life stories. I love hearing more from the wonderful community we’re building together on this channel!
I started earlier this year, not long before turning 30. Not only have I learned skating skills, but also I mostly stopped getting the leg pain that has been bothering me for years (while traditional exercise only made it worse). I can feel now as my level has increased that I will also start to gain some cardiovascular fitness and maybe even regain some of the flexibility I lost after I stopped dancing. Yesterday was my first practice for my first ice show!
Thank you so much for sharing your experience! It’s incredible to hear that skating has not only helped you develop new skills but also reduced the leg pain that traditional exercise couldn’t. Skating truly is a unique way to build fitness, flexibility, and cardiovascular health-and it’s so rewarding to see your progress! Congratulations on preparing for your first ice show-that’s a huge milestone! Best of luck, and enjoy every moment of it!
I started skating at age 51 with zero prior experience on the ice or roller skating. My slight background in gymnastics and dance has helped, but the most important thing is how much I enjoy ice skating. Like you said, today is the best day to start skating regardless of age! ❤ ⛸️
Thank you for sharing your story! Starting at 51 with no prior skating experience is truly inspiring, and it’s amazing that your background in gymnastics and dance has helped you. Most importantly, your passion for skating shines through, and that’s what makes all the difference. You’re absolutely right-there’s no better time to start than today, no matter your age. Keep enjoying your journey on the ice!

And is it a realistic goal in my situation to do an axel jump in less than a year if i do two ice skating session per week and 3/4 off ice session? Thank you for your time 😊
It’s great to have the Axel as a goal! With two skating sessions per week, along with focused off-ice training, progress is definitely possible, but keep in mind that the Axel is a challenging jump that takes time to master. For many skaters, it can take more than a year, especially if you’re working independently.
Hello , i am 21 and i want to start figure skating . I did 5 years of rollerblade and i know how to stop, glide on one feet, swizzle forward and backward slowly. I don't have the financial means yet to afford group lesson or coaches. Do you think i can learn the basics on my own with youtube and asking advixes to figures skaters and then pay for coaches when i progress in more difficult spin or jump?
That’s fantastic! Your rollerblading skills give you a strong foundation for figure skating. Starting with UA-cam tutorials and advice from other skaters is a great approach to learn the basics. Focus on core skills like stroking, crossovers, and basic turns, and when you’re ready for jumps and spins, a coach will help with those advanced moves. Enjoy the journey!
how many times should i do them

I want to know where I can start as a beginner with ballet and what exactly I should practice every day. My goal is to emote to classical and jazz music on ice and compose my own arrangements on ice. Thank you.
@@realityisbest8963 Hi! Starting ballet is a great idea to boost your artistry on the ice. Here’s a quick plan: 1. Basics: Focus on the five foot positions, arm positions, plié (knee bends), tendu (foot stretch), and relevé (rising onto toes). These build strength, balance, and control. 2. Daily Practice: Spend 10-15 minutes each day on plié, tendu, and relevé. This consistency will improve stability and fluidity. 3. Express with Music: Practice slow, controlled movements to classical and jazz pieces to develop your musicality and expression. 4. Consider Classes: Find a local ballet or jazz studio and ask about beginner group lessons for guidance and feedback. Also, check out my ballet and dance class videos designed specifically for skaters. This one is great for beginners: ua-cam.com/video/qY2uZzXqmXQ/v-deo.html Ballet will add grace and emotion to your skating-enjoy the process!
When doing a waltz jump, must you take off and land on your toe pick?
@@learningpeace9788 For a waltz jump, you take off from the forward outside edge of one foot and then land on the opposite foot’s back outside edge, and while the toe pick is involved, you don’t “jump off” or “land on” it directly. Here’s how it works: • Takeoff: You use the forward outside edge to push off, but the toe pick provides stability and assists with the push into the jump. • Landing: You’ll land on the back outside edge of the opposite foot, but your toe pick touches down briefly to help you balance and settle into the landing. So, in short, you don’t take off or land “on” your toe pick entirely; it’s more that the toe pick is involved in the takeoff and landing phases as part of the technique.
