How did you find your perfect coach, and what were you looking for in them? Share in the comments below.
I’m still in group lessons and plan to stay there as long as possible, but I do have a favorite and least favorite among the group lessons coaches we’ve had. My least favorite doesn’t even teach at all, he just demonstrates a skill and asks the group to repeat it, and his only feedback is whether we did it right or wrong. Even if I ask him specific questions, he doesn’t explain any technique or give any drills, he just demonstrates again. I always say, if I could learn that way, I’d watch the Olympics today and win the Olympics next year! My favorite coach so far is really picky, and that’s why I like her. She nitpicks tiny little details of our technique, which I think is frustrating to some of my classmates who feel like she has impossible standards, but I really like it. It’s the same reason I like your videos more than a lot of other UA-cam coaches - just because I’m an adult doesn’t mean I don’t want to be the best I can be! I prefer always striving for improvement, versus thinking that I accomplished a skill so the quality of it doesn’t matter. And with my dance background, teacher criticism sounds to me like the highest form of praise anyway! I know it means she believes I have the ability to improve, or she wouldn’t bother.
Thank you so much for sharing your perspective! It sounds like you are my favorite kind of skater-someone who truly values the process of learning and improving, no matter how small the details might seem. Your mindset of embracing feedback and striving for excellence is exactly what leads to real progress, and it’s wonderful to see how dedicated you are to becoming the best you can be. Keep that determination-it will take you far!
As an adult skater, I think group classes are valuable for two reasons 1. they help you figure out if you like to skate at all. If you do enjoy skating then the next value of group lessons is 2. you get to have instruction from a variety of teachers, that way you can figure out who you want to work with.
After a year of lessons, I FINALLY found my coach! She was incredibly detailed with her instructions during our group lessons - my classmates were annoyed with her, but I thought she was a genius! She spent an entire lesson being very precise with how we should keep our hips straight and turn our shoulders and arms. Turns out, she has multiple degrees in dance! I am so lucky to work with her!
Thank you for sharing your journey as an adult skater! It’s so true that group lessons can be a fantastic way to explore skating and find the right coach for your needs. Your story highlights how important detailed instruction is, especially when it comes to technique. It sounds like you’ve found an incredible coach who really understands the mechanics of movement-what a gift! Wishing you continued success and joy in your skating journey!
