HIRAETH [here-eye-th]
Meaning:
"A deep sense of longing, a yearning for that which has passed, a sense of homesickness tinged with grief or sorrow over the lost or departed".
"A longing to be where your spirit lives".
"A sense of homesickness, a deep longing to return to your ancestral home or yearning to be where your spirit belongs".
All of our stories were getting old, and we wanted to be able to climb more and live more.
So, with only a little previous sailing experience we sold the house, quit our jobs, and opted for a different lifestyle.
We bought Hiraeth, a 1987, Wauquiez - Centurion 42
And we decided to document some of our new stories and share them with you guys here.
We hope you enjoy joining us on our journeys, and if anyone finds any inspiration from these videos, that would be amazing!

Real Sailing, No Dramas: From Orkney to Shetland
If you're sick of all the drama sailing, this will certainly be your cup of tea. We've arrived in Stromness on the Isle of Orkney and we're heading up to the bay of Skaill to visit the neolithic settlement of Skara Brae. Sailing's not all about constant action. In fact, a lot of the time it can be pretty boring. So, in this episode, we try to show a brief glimpse of how we fill the time in those moments between needing to actively sail the boat. We leave the Atlantic side of the Outer Hebrides and make our way back through the sound of Harris and down to the Isle of Barra. After making a quick stop to re-provis...

Installing Deck Fittings on a Sailboat - Using Epoxy Resin

This video is all about drilling more holes in our sailboat, as a boat can never have too many holes... I'm fitting a new block to the base of the mast and re-fitting the existing ones in a bombproof way to ensure they stay leak-free. Leaking fittings lead to a wet deck core, costly further repairs and potentially dangerous failures. Facebook: profile.php?... Instagram: instagram.c...

Sailing SV Hiraeth - Just the beginning
Such a great journey and your filming of it was excellent. Thank you.
Fantastic filming, especially at the mostly abandoned Russian mining town. We hope to follow in your footsteps one day.
Loved it. Thanks.
Hi there, interested in fitting similar deck blocks to our boat, do you have the details of the stand up blocks you used? Thanks
Hi there. The blocks used are the original Lewmar Ocean - size 2 & 3. I'm not sure of the part number for the upstands, but I managed to find a couple for this installation with a bit of searching. These older blocks aren't the most friction free. But they're very strong and don't have bearings that need replacing. As all of our main sail lines are controlled at the mast, we don't have the need to run extra turning blocks back to the cockpit. So, for us. Stronger is better than less friction. Good luck with the install.
Love the title, makes a change from the terrible clickbait titles ...
No bull 😂
I'm only here for the music. Nice sailing. My boat is on the hard now for the winter, have to seek substitution.
Thanks. We'll try to keep the music coming. I hope we can provide at least a little vicarious sailing pleasure for you, to see you through until next season.
That's bloody awesome 🤘
Thanks! Glad you liked it.
Very good,it will be time that people realise that the greatest joy in sailing is not to be battered by waves and too strong winds( mr anderaa) or nearly naked woman snorkelling. Just smoothly travelling from point a to b in fair winds is in a normal sailboat more than challinging enough.no need to scare people off with crazy( dangerous) adventures. Visiting new destinations, meet people,is for me very precious also.
Thanks for the comment. Glad you liked the video. Yes, sometimes watching videos you can forget that sailing can actually be fun.
This is what cruising is all about - exploring interesting places, sailing and enjoying passages. Excellently narrated video and great sense of humour 😅 Subscribed ❤
More than true 👍👍
Always enjoy your videos, but particularly this one. I grew up on Rousay (prounounced “R-ow-see”) and my parent’s house faces out into Eynhallow Sound where you went through the Burger Roost tidal race. It is a formidable place. I’ve seen many boats pass through and get the tides wrong, engine failures and all sorts. One guy went below and closed the hatches while his spreaders kept hitting the water until finally it spat him out the other end. 😄 I’m stumped at then yellow object and can only guess that it’s something to do with EMEC and the tidal energy, but I thought it would have been charted if that was the case. Really enjoyed your rendition of Cripple Creek too. 🙌🏻
Wauquiez Centurion is a very good boat !!!! mine is a jeanneau Mélody 34ft
très belle vidéo et très beau concert, malheureusement un peu trop court !!
Many thanks. More Banjo in the future, just for you 😀
Another grand video.... Thanks.
Many thanks. Glad you like it.
Nice to hear from you guys been a while since we heard your voices … and Miles whats with the man bun?
Yeah, we've been busy the last few weeks and got a bit behind with the editing. The man bun.... It’s a portable pillow for spontaneous naps.
Superb footage guys thanks for sharing
Glad you enjoyed it
Nice one, Thanks!. @ 16:15...y'all transitioned from autopilot to windvane, sorry if it's a dumb question, but apart from saving on power, what was your strategic thinking here?
Hi there. No deep strategy involved I'm afraid. When sailing in open water we just like to use the hydrovane if possible. It saves on power consumption and it's one less electrical piece of equipment we're wearing out. We find the windvane's not that practical for shorter journeys, especially around the islands and in lochs. The wind generally shifts around so much, it's a bit of a pain in the arse constantly needing to adjust it.
@@SailingHiraeth Thanks 👍
Great video and insight into a nice gentle passage up to Shetland
Just removed my diesel tanks today, they’re mild steel, 24 years old, with a total combined capacity of 400litres. Thankfully they already have inspection hatches but the mould, rust and dirt inside is unreal. Getting them out the boat for proper acid cleaning is going to be fun! Thanks for the upload, will be fitting a very similar polisher on re fit. Happy sailing ⛵️
Good luck with getting the tanks clean. It'll be well worth it. If you fit a polisher too, you'll be making it almost guaranteed that you'll never have a fuel filter blockage. One less thing to worry about on those dark, lumpy nights coming into port.
Nice job.... . Any suggested precaution to avoid horseshoe shaped ring fall in to tank? ..My boat Benetau 393 tank is not made of metal..PVC or a kind of hard plastic.. It has only 6 cm of hole where only level gauge sensor goes in to the tank. And impossible to take to take the tank out.
Have a clearance hole in the horseshoe for the bolts and thread the pvc tank. If you use some adhesive on the bolts they won’t spin when fixing the nuts. Make sure you thread the holes from the inside of the tank
Hi there. If you put a slightly longer bolt on the thread next to the gap of the horseshoe. This will allow you to remove all the other nuts and be able to turn the top plate without dropping the horseshoe inside the tank. Though I found that the nitrile gasket does a good enough job of preventing this, so I didn't bother.
I’m really inspired by what you are doing. Your videos are brilliant. I’m very keen to cruise this area myself. I have contacted my current insurers who are not willing to underwrite this destination. Are you able to advise on yacht insurers who are able to insure for cruising Svalbard?
Glad you enjoyed the videos and managed to find some inspiration, hope you manage to organise the trip the area is amazing. We were insured by GJW who were already our insurers. As a word of advise put together a written itinerary and try to speak directly to the insurance companies underwriters as most insurance companies online application process will simple reject the request.
Thanks very much indeed
Wow. That was excellent. I had a similar issue with our last boat a 30 year old Dehler. I had the tank cleaned but I was not convinced it was a permanent solution.
Stunning. Not keen on the beach fire. Love the beach clean up. Leave only footsteps. 🙂
That was a dream sail. What super conditions. 👍
Really enjoying your videos, keep it up.
Many thanks. Glad you like them. We're trying to keep them up, but I'm sooooo slow at the editing I'm afraid.
Ha,i just encountered your videos, and as always the first thing that strikes me is the low vieuws, like in other channels who comment theyr journeys on a honest way without a touch off “ dramasailing” like mr A ,or “bikini and snorkelsailing “like sailing V its all ends up with poor vieuwnumbers. Off course i assume you wont make a living on your adventures, but as i now from experience….its hurting a little bit. For example if we compare mr anderaa ,with mr patrick laine, well its obvious that the last his achievements are a lot greater…. So it seems that people like more drama ( and bikinis) than honest adventurers. Besides that,i just got back from an summer trip wich brought me to oa orkney, fair isle,Shetland, far oe,hebrides inclisive st kilda .skey ,two channels in Scotland etc, that I realised once again …that sailing is the most uncomfortable, most expensive, with the lowest freedom( wind, tides, shoals etc) off all ……😅😂😂
Hi there. No, I guess we're never going to achieve financial freedom with our videos (though it would be nice). The Idea behind making them originally, was that it was simply a way to document our travels and the work we've done with Hiraeth. None of our parents or friends are sailors, and just showing them photos and trying to describe our experiences didn't quite seem to convey the reality of the situations in a meaningful way for them. Hence the filming. We both enjoy making the videos and are simply trying to capture what we're doing without overdramatising or understating things. I hope you're enjoying them, and keep watching if you are.

What an amazing adventure. Thanks for sharing it.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Very nice, aye! Very nice! Lovely to experience this through your video. Cheers
Thank you very much. Glad you enjoyed it 😁
Cool film 😊. Best part of the world (in summer) west coast of Scotland is idyllic too.
Hey, glad you enjoyed the video. If you have good weather you wouldn't want to be anywhere else 😉
Very atmospheric trip, enjoyed the commentary and explanation of the navigation, set up and conditions. Keep up the good work. Enjoy the rest of the “summer”.😊
Enjoyed the vid, when does the Mediterranean leg of the voyage commence? Just asking for a friend 😀
How has the copper coat been performing? Been toying with the idea, many mixed reviews. We live in the tropics of Australia, dont use the boat as much as we want to! Sits on a swing mooring for a month or so at a time.
So far the cooppercoat has been great, been on 4 years now and we have had good results. We lightly abraded it with scotchbright pads for the first time this year as we had a small amount of slim on waterline when we got lifting at end last season. Based on current performance we expect to get at least another four years out of it. Most problems seem to be caused by poor preparation and incorrect application always follow their temp and humidity application advice. We found Coopercoat had a excellent customer service and are great if you need to discuss your particular requirements, they even offered to video call us on the day we were applying to advise.
Thanks for sharing you adventures with us! I look forward to watching them... and dreaming I was doing similar.
Thanks.... so so jealous, envious, impressed.😊
Great thumbnail !
14:30 I can feel the heat when we realize the race is on
Maybe see if there are any hairdressers on Orkney. Mile's hair is starting to look unmanageable 😊😊
Wow ! Although we're from south of the border. As children we were so lucky to spend time with our lovely extended family on the isle of bute for summer holidays. Best of days😊. Thank you for the reminder 😊😊. New subs here.
Great vid and love the name of ya boat ( arguably one of the most beautiful words in all languages)
I have sailed these waters . why are you not telling us the headlands and lighthouses you are passing as it allways look different on a different day different weather,
Funny !
Thank you Sally and Myles. Lovely video and I love Myles dance movements.🕺❤😊
Loved the video! Some great clips and excellent editing! Felt like I was at sea! Worst night at sea EVER was Stornaway to Orkney: 2-3m seas and 6 knots of wind. BLEEEECH.
Just finished watching your Scottish series, and I absolutely love it! You two make really lovely edits, I’ve seen a few vlogs around Scottish waters but yours are my favourite by far. I’ve subscribed to your channel and I’m gonna enjoy your other work. Keep up the great work guys!!!! Fair weathers to you both ☀️ 💨⛵️
Great video
Good. Thanks. Low key and real. A bit negative at times but then it picked up.
Flogging sails downwind in very light airs is a total bummer. In fact, I was cussing just this morning along the south Norwegian coast...leftover seas from last night's near-gale and 8 knots of wind...
No Antares charts? Bill
I love your stuff! Great video, it's nice to see a sailing channel.actually sailing! Hopefully we're coming to the west coast next month. Our charter at flamingo yachts just went bust and stole all our money, were trying to book with another charter co. Sail safely friends. X
Thanks, we're glad you liked the video. Sorry to hear about the charter company though. We hope you have success in finding another in time. Come and say hello, if you see us out on the water ⛵😎
Absolutely stunning video! Such beauty and what a privilege to see those basking sharks 🦈 Well done guys on an amazing vid and collecting so much rubbish! Stay safe much love ❤
Love it 😂😂😂
